Civ 4 BTS Succession Game

Okay, at the outset, I reset some production stuff: Irvine switched to Worker; DOOM switched to Lighthouse (to get the lake to 3 Food); research switched to Writing.

As for unit/building construction, I didn't keep close tabs on anything. As I recall, Irvine built a Worker, Archer, Axeman, and a Library. Peragus finished the Settler, then built an Axe, a Worker, and some more military. DOOM built its lighthouse, then I switched to a Library.

We were pretty clearly one of the last civs to discover writing, because I was able to get OB treaties with all of the non-neighboring civs. Speaking of non-neighbor civs, I met a new one:

wang0000se1.jpg

Huh, huh, huh... He said "Wang."

I mobilized several of our backup defenders in cities to serve as fog-busters, to stop Barbarians from spawning in between our settlements.

On Turn 6, Writing finished, and I set our research to Alphabet. Also, someone else discovered Confucianism. I found out the next turn that it was Zara Yaqob when he converted. This alarmed me a bit-- the opposition has a decent tech lead. Our aggressive settling strategy has been costly (although, IMO, worthwhile. Land is Power).

Turn 8: Fourth city founded, on the "Black" site on my dotmap. Given the fact that it's in the middle of our empire and that we've been using locations from Obsidz games, I named it Crossroads Keep.

Turn 11: Hatshepsut wants an OB treaty. I say no.

Turn 13: Somebody built the Great Library.

Turn 17: Alphabet finished. I start on Currency. Here's the state of the tech race:

techt170000xd5.jpg

Since we aren't the only civ with Alphabet, I decide that it'd be best to trade it now while the value is high:

trade1t170000tv9.jpg

Next turn, I do one more trade:

tradewangt180000oi5.jpg

Not much more of interest until my final turn, when someone founded Christianity. Here's the state of our Kingdom, first north, then south. I've added flags to the map where I think we should place future cities:

mapsoutht1000000hd3.jpg

That Babylonian Swordsman has been sitting on our road for a few turns. He's making me nervous. We're not ready for war just yet, but I'd recommend the next player to build a pile of axemen to build our forces. Hammy clearly has Iron, so he ain't gonna go down easy.

Here's what we know of Babylonian territory. There's a Spy within 1 turn of completion in Peragus, so if the next player is feeling brave, he can sneak around over there to learn more. Otherwise, a spy is a decent defensive investment to leave sitting in a border city.

Let's see what I can do. I'm going to make Construction and Machinery a priority, and see if I can increase the research rate.

If you disagree, go ahead and tell me.

One quick recommendation: I think that Metal Casting should be a tech priority. (Maybe before CoL, maybe after.) We have both Gold and Gems resources, and Forges increase the happiness effect of both of these by 1.

Good call, both Peragus and Irvine are in need of happy faces. I've already started and I'm going to send that settler to the northernmost city site. I'm thinking of not settling it just yet, as I've already raised the tech rate, and we will be in the red for a while.

Turn 1: Settler moved, workers working, including a chop in Irvine. Tech research at 100% for now. I've also sent the westernmost warrior to scout around Babylon. I think Hammurabi may be preparing an attack.

Turn 2: Axeman killed a warrior to the north, the spy is now scouting Babylonia as suggested, and I've started a library and a chop in Peragus.

Turn 3: Settler is in place. Started an axeman in CK. One axeman. (See what I did there?)

Turn 4: The chops are done And we now have a view of Babylon. Take a looksee.

babylon0000dd7.jpg

Just two Bowman.

Turn 5: The Library and the worker are done, and I am now popping axemen all across the land. In other news, Confucianism has spread to Irvine. For now I've decided to forgo conversion. Peragus is suffering from unhappiness, though. Finally, Hammurabi has founded a new city to the south of his empire. I'm going to see if can check it out.

Turn 6: We are now researching Metal Casting. It will be done in 8 turns with research at 80%. I traded Currency to Zara Yaqob for Monarchy and Math. It will give our chops a nice boost, and mathematics leads to a bunch of good techs, including construction. Finally, I switched to Hereditary Rule to help Peragus and Irvine.

trade0000la4.jpg

Turn 7: The AI settled on a gold. Schmucks.

gold0000pa5.jpg

Turn 10: Zara Yaqob wanted us to convert to Conf, but I told him to bugger off. Seeing as there are three Hindu civs, it just didn't seem like a good idea.

Turn 11: I started a market in Peragus, to add a bit to our economy. And here's Hammurabi's army. The only units that are missing seem to be the two bowmen in Babylon. He may have built more there since then, though.

army0000cq5.jpg

Turn 12: Our spy was found!

Turn 13: The library in DOOM is done, so it is now finishing off the barracks.

Turn 14: Confucianism has spread in DOOM.

Turn 15: Metal casting is done. Construction is next. Six turns for it to be done.

Turn 16: Forges started at Irvine and CK.

Turn 17: Forge begun at Peragus.

Turn 18: Wang gave us Calendar and Mono. Monotheism, that is.

tech20000uh0.jpg

Turn 19: We now have two cities to raze:

raze0000bp8.jpg

Also, I founded Meatytown to the north. It's building a lighthouse.

Turn 20: Construction is done, so I started Machinery.

Whoever goes next, as soon as the forges are done, start building catapults.

Nicely played. We might want to think about opening our borders with Egypt. They're not much of a threat right now, and I think that their cultural borders on the coastline are preventing us from having sea-borne trade routes with the other civs. Plus, it'll help Hinduism spread to us and perhaps give us a relations boost that will help keep them on our side during the Babylonian War.

I'll do it, but I have to cook first. Give me an hour to get back with the completed turn. It's currently zulu 21.56.

Yay!

If you decide to start the war, get those catapults out to the field of battle before going after Hammurabi. And remember that our military is mostly stationed near Peragus. Also, there's one axeman up north with a couple of extra exp. points, that might come in handy.

I'm thinking you should take out the capital first, to cripple their unit production capability, but that city with the flood plains might also be a good first target. The bugger will start whipping like crazy, as soon as you attack, so those two cities should be taken out as quickly as possible. Don't forget to raze the two cities closer to our empire.

Of course, if you feel you shouldn't attack during your 20 turns, don't.

I'm just chewing my way through a rather fine and fiery sag paneer while looking into the game.

1. An expression of mild surprise crosses W's features when he notices that a number of units have not used their upgrades. Thinks: what Walter Mitty nonsense is this? Does nothing yet.

2. Hatshepsut demands the currency tech. I tell her to get stuffed.

3. Elizabeth asks to swap resources. In a patriotic ferment I agree.

4. Dur-Kurigalzu is looking mighty tempting. I have two catapults in the works, and intend to hit it with three swordsmen. I notice somebody *directs glare at pid* has pegged a new site for city, and I will have to somewhere building a settler.

5. Being a vat-grown fool I choose to convert to christianity. However, I have perfect confidence all will be well.

6. Time is running short, and a spy is caught near Peragus. This act of Babylonian aggression cannot go unpunished, and besides which we're running short of cash to pay the men. Cry havoc and all that.

7. At the same time as declaring war I have begun building crossbowmen, since they are superb all-rounders, and also knocked out a spearman for DOOM in case Hattie gets odd notions. I have also begun researching horse riding, since I think with such a large empire full of open space the only sensible option is a roving defence if two fronts open up.

8. Our forces cross the border in fine style. Once across, my whimsical provision of a chariot proves fortuitous. A Babylonian axeman on the road is minced quite easily. I considered bringing them back in, but the temptation to cut the road proved too great. We're going to be faffing about this end of their country and I don't want them racing down here.

9. The chariot actually survives my gamble, and returns to the fold, with a melee promotion. Compounded by some locals who aid them, no doubt impressed by their ferocious demeanour. Meanwhile our first crossbow unit has arrived in good order, just in time for the assault. Let's see how it goes...

10. ...besides the unexpected death of a swordsman everything goes very well, and I even have the chance to nobble ANOTHER lot of reinforcements with the chariot, who I've now christened 1/1st Royal Bastards.

11. Borsippa is now the target, and although our catapult survived I have another ready so it moves up onto the wooded hills with a protecting garrison bowman. I added the escort because he's obsolete and might actually be some use.

12. Well, JUST AS I PLANNED the archer and catapult are annihilated by a swordsman and an axemen. Er... bugger.

13. Our army is now rested and has washed its hair, so it advances. Yet again our opponent proffers a reinforcing axeman, that the Royal Bastards mince despite being a bit understrength.

14. A horse archer is beaten like a non-mathematically gifted Indian slum child by a swordsman, who is then mashed flat by a garrison trained crossbowman. Cheered greatly by news from the front our people near the cpaital discover a way of turning frogs into vodka. We get a winery!

15. I realise I have run out of time.

Can someone explain how to transfer the file?

FYI, the reason for the non-promotion of units is two-fold: flexibility and healing.

The first is self-explanatory: there's no sense committing a unit to a particular function before you know for certain what role you need it to fill. As to the second, a unit gets some free healing after using a promotion, so, if you're not afraid of losing it entirely, it gives you a quick band-aid if you're attacked in the field (or, more likely, if you're hit with some collateral damage from an enemy siege engine).

And good move for including a chariot in our invasion force.

All is well apparently, although things get a bit cryptic without any screenshots. The only thing I don't really condone is the converting to Christianity, but it's nothing too serious.

Ah, I guessed about the advantages, but I usually don't wait about. Get it done now, you never know when you'll need it. But I left the rear forces unpromoted.

And apologies for the conversion thing. But on the bright side at least I din't do anything wierd like Hinduism. No sense trying to placate that bloc as we're going to crushkill them toot sweet.

I just checked your saved game, and again, well done. Also, if you were going to convert to a religion you should have chosen Confucianism, seeing as we have three cities with it, and only one with Christianity.

Hmm, I am more of a builder and tend to neglet the military except when going to war, but some observations.

- Babylon will be a tough nut to crack and you need more cats for that. Luckily, their source of iron is right next to it and can be easily severed while sieging.

- I'd probably build Heroic Epic on Peragus as soon as Literacy is reserached and chop some trees to speed it up. Getting more cats asap might be more important.

- Either Engineering or Feudalism next.

- I usually give courthouses a pretty high priority. Better remember to build those after the war of conquest or the economy will collapse.

- Seems somewhat mixed. More cottages for cottage economy, except for the GP farm city, of course.

- I have heard that the dikes can be built on coastal cities even without rivers. If so, get more cities on the coasts.

Not me, I'm afraid. I've stupidly gone home to visit my family and forgotten my Beyond the Sword disk (remembered Warlords and Civ IV, though, for all the good they'll do me). I'll be back in Saudi Arabia at my own computer next week and back in the game, so in the meantime I'm here to support and encourage only. This may be a good thing - I'm not really the person you want in charge when running a war. :shifty:
