Kaftan Barlast Posted August 24, 2007 Share Posted August 24, 2007 Though I normally leave DC Comics to be read by the 12yearolds that have always been their target demographic, I did pick up Alex Ross Justice a while ago because he is wickedly skilled. But when I got into this, I was faced with a Justice League that must have grown completely incompetent since the last time I read about them in the 80's. Wonder Woman gets the **** kicked out of her by some weird chick in a leopard suit, Superman is defeated by a clone and a zombie and Hawkgirl is blown to smithereens by toy spitfires. I dont know anything about hawkgirl, but someone like wonderwoman who can throw tanks like snowballs does not loose a catfight to a... catwoman. And Superman can survive a direct impact by a nuke, but he cant take a few punches from a zombie?! What the hell is going on! Anywho, superheroes are usually, usually, boring, but comics is so much more than superhero stuff fortunately. I just started reading Jeff Smith's Bone from end to end now that I have them all. And Kingdom Come still qualifies as the greatest comic serial I've ever read. I preferred Marvel back when I read, so I was quite dissapointed when Marvel's Kingdom Come counterpart Earth X turned out so boring. It doesnt really have a plot per se, but sums up the history of the evolution of superpowered people in the marvel universe seen through the eyes of a journalist. The art is top notch though. It's a collection of short stories set in the fantasy world of Newhon, drawn by the Hellboy artist Mike Mignola. The characters Fafhrd and Mouser are thieves, mob thugs, adventurers and fighters who continuously run into all sorts of strange situations. The art is beautiful, the text well written and the adapation successful (with the exception of the second to last story "Lean Times in Lankhmar" which is just confusing). Supes was taken down by Grundy, Metallo, Bizarro, and Parasite if I remember correctly. Parasite and Metallo alone are capable of taking down Supes if the conditions are right. Having Bizarro and Grundy hold him down for Parasite to suck his strength and Metallo to rape him with Kryptonite radiation seems plausible to me. WW getting beat by the cat chick was dumb though. And Supes was only able to survive the nuke in Kingdom Come, which gave him another 20 or so years to absorb solar radiation The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity. He refuses to use any DC character created after 1986 because he thinks things went downhill from there. (for example when kingdom come came out the reigning green lantern was Kyle Raynor, but ross used the origional alan scott.) Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Since then, my ideal image of a woman is a 7' amazon with blue eyes and a horned helmet... an ideal my girlfriends have found hard to live up to. Overall, I think the mainstream comics business is in a bit of a rut right now. Marvel blew all their Steam on "Civil War"(which was sheer awesomeness), so now they've left it to the interns to spew out That Hulk-thing which is among the least interesting crap Ive ever read. It works on so many levels: There's the combination of Donald Duck style characters with simple, cartoonish motivations and a well crafted, serious fantasy world. Then of course Jeff Smith's AMAZING visuals that are a constant source of joy and really do a wonderful job at supporting the jokes. Smith is a masterful storyteller whose sense of rythm and pace is unparalled. The creature and humanoid designs are also great. Supposedly Lankhmar(and Grey Mouser himself) worked as an inspiration for Thief:The Dark Project Funny you should mention that, as just a while ago I noticed how similar the cover of the upcoming Finnish translation of the Lankhmar books is with the visual style of the Thief cinematics.
