how the hell are they going to do this?

Featured Replies

the only way i can see this working out is if they pull it off as a updated fallout: brotherhood of steel.

grrrrrr, why do i keep spelling "and" as "nad", or "driven" as "drivven".

damn you lexdixa, damn you to hell

Crates, cats and donkey-aliens = WIN AND MONEY

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

I hope they don't turn it into BOS, or some X-Men Legends type of "RPG" for the sake of being able to play it with a gamepad as well. I hope Josh pulls something better off, especially when it comes to the combat system.

am i thinking of the right game here, BOS was the total no rpg-all-turnbased-combat fallout game using the engine from the first two games right?

or was it one of those craptacular console only action games that had nothing to do with fallout

Both the PC and console games were called Brotherhood of Steel.

The PC strategy version had the added Tactics to the name.

Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel for PC: Kept the style and didn't stray too far from the source material. Same openning monologue style, same rule system.

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel on consoles: Crapped on Fallout mythology, mindless action rpg click-fest.

ok... tactics was what i was thinking of not BOS (bushel of ****).

FOBOS wasn't even an action-rpg, more like the crappiest Postal clone ever. It didn't matter that it wasn't Fallout in any way, it was just a horrible game, that no one fortunately played.

The design decisions were implemented long ago. Chris Avellone was nice enough to have them in his blog: Read and Learn

"Some men see things as they are and say why?"
"I dream things that never were and say why not?"
- George Bernard Shaw

"Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man."
- Friedrich Nietzsche

"The amount of energy necessary to refute bull**** is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it."

- Some guy

How they hell are they gonna do this?

Hmmm, a brief perusal of the source material suggests a rich fund of Stuff. For example:

1. A dystopic future earth run by a corporatist regime-****-corporate bordello. An earth where weaponised aliens are an astute commercial move, not an ethical dilemma.

2. Bizarre quasi-monastic prison colonies where firearms and energy weapons are banned*

3. Space pirates with cool guns / dreadlocks / wheelchairs

4. Genetic experiments gone extremely wrong

5. Temples of long-dead alien cultures infested with xenomorphic killer parasites

6. Gung-ho colonial marines with APCs, WW2-era GI helmets and access to tactical nukes

7. Playable replicant / Bishop-style characters, right?

8. Narrow corridors. Flame throwers. Capiche?

* Sigourney Weaver, in a bizarre moment of anti-firearms fervour, demanded less guns in Alien 3, the weakest of the movies in my humble as No.4 has Winona and SPACE PIRATES.

The backstory is a good 'un, I'm sure they can do lots with it.

Cheers

the content is there, no one doubts that, it's the rpg issue that i think has everyone worried. the fact that gearbox is doing the fps and obsidian is doing rpg, kind of implies that a fps-rpg is not going to happen. i think a deus-ex 'ish aliens game would rock out with it's **** out, but since sega has more or less drawn a line between the two i cant really think of a way to pull it off.

all so this is "aliens" not "aliens vs predator" that limits the options as well. if the butt faces were involved it would add a layer of tactics that could be implemented.

add obsidians track record to the aliens franchise and you get = a party based, third person game with witty, intelligent dialog engaging in real time combat with semi mindless drones who's only tactic is to run at you as fast as they can jump on your back and eat your brain using there spring loaded steel tipped tung thingy, oh yeah they blow up into a pool of acid.

i know obsidian can think up a story for aliens, it's the game play angle that has me scratching my think bump and going "hunh".

don't think i am trying to be discouraging about this, aliens and rpg's are my bread and butter, i just want to know what other people's ideas are.

p.s. good memory on all the comic books, 'Monte', the only ones i haven't totally read my self are the early ones about neut and hicks. i wish dark horse would show some love to there other licenses instead of tying all there talent up with endless star wars spin offs.

grrrrrr, why do i keep spelling "and" as "nad", or "driven" as "drivven".

Track record proves nothing, Creative Assembly made an amazing 3rd person action game after 3 empire building strategies. Id made Doom after Commander Keen. Looking Glass made a flying simulator after a thieving first person sneaking game. Devs are devs, it's not that they can't do new.

amen brother Musopticon?, i was going to include that i think this will be a good chalenge for obsidian, god knows they need to get out from under bioware's shadow.

also i would like to amend that my previous post with that i get the feeling that Monte Carlo was getting at they make a human vs human in an aliens setting, that would be cool. in metroid you allmost never fight metroids it's all about samus vs the space pirates ove the metroids, and it works, but that is allso the metroid formula. i dont think fox is gonna give that much slack to them to pull it off. we all know how those hollywood types like there formulas, this is the same company that had kept maried with children on the air for ten years and has kept simpsons on for fourteen.

grrrrrr, why do i keep spelling "and" as "nad", or "driven" as "drivven".

I have trouble imaging it working.. especially in evoking a creepy feeling. But I remembered playing a game where I got that feeling despite the fact that was it isometric view and that was

in a later stage of Starcraft, I forgot the exact level but it involved you going into an infested terran base with a small squad and I forget the goal- but you encountered a ton of zerg (popping out left and right). The fact that your characters were dying left and right helped amp up the stakes.

I think they should have a system where any npc can die- but at the same time add tons of little things that make you care for them. It won't be the horror of jumping out of your seat , but the fear of what will happen to those you care about. Even if it is that they just seem like good people- and you don't know there whole life story as in other Bioware/Black Isle games.

Squad survival horror, huh?

I like Zero's point. Obs has the talent to add horror by taking you into the characters, and shoud do so.

A game needn't be an FPS to be atmospheric (read: horror). It's a different vector to deliver the thrill, but it is still possible. Haven't you ever read a book that scared you?

Have you played a game that's not in first person and is actually scary? Because I haven't. There were segments in for example, Silent Hill 2, that were made scary by the previously shown fmv that was prominently from the character's perspective or from a viewpoint that caused you to sympathetically experience the horrors, but the actual gameplay where your viewpoint hangs a safe 4 meters away from the character do not hold a candle to gameplay intensity of such games as Aliens versus Predator or Fatal Frame.

I'm not saying that horror can't be done in, for example, third person, but so far the best attempts have been ones where you stare the freight into the face, not commandeer a pulp of vertex shaders and normal mapping in the shape of your character from a safe vantage point. Heh, try playing Ocean House in Bloodlines in third person for a case in point.

Maybe Obsidian doesn't even want it to be a Horror RPG? If they want to do it, however, doing it in First Person is pretty much inevitable. It worked in Bloodlines (Hotel) very well.

Quite a few.

I believe you since fear is such a personal thing, but indulge me, would you kindly?

they can do what heck they want. its only limited to what they are given... the universe of alien. They could do like KotOR or even more open ended. Or they might do something like Alien Swarm. They stand completely free

sargothsigcopy.jpg

I still keep wondering how they are going to pull this off as well. FPS? I'd have no problem with that. A modified NWN2 engine... I don't think they would be allowed to do that..?? (I have no idea what the licensing agreement was with Atari in making the NWN2 engine).

Anyways, I trust the team at Obsidian to make a good game. :D

The Resident Evil games. Everyone jumped at the dogs crashing through those windows. Well, the first two. The action elements they started introducing made them easier to cope with after that.

The Silent Hill games. Pyramid Head, RUN! JESUS FUDGE!

Well, I only got scared in the fmv's, otherwise they were pretty stale.

Now, Condemned is freaking intense at parts.
