Hurlshort
Warhammer Online has a pretty unique situation in that they really need to balance the servers between each faction, and they even have to worry about having the different tiers balanced. It's a bit of a nightmare I imagine. Still, they are fairly new to the scene so I think it is too early to pass judgement. Auto Assault also came out a long time ago, so I'm not sure how that qualifies as a recent release. That list you supplied is pretty good evidence that the MMO genre is alive and growing, you have a good mix of old and new titles in there. Tabula Rasa is the only recent release that was forced to shut down the servers for good. It's also the only high quality title that has shut down. It was a stable game, gt good reviews, but it never found an audience. On the other hand, games like Vanguard and Age of Conan that had serious flaws, still seem able to carve out a niche in the market and survive. Hurlshort
Sorry, I was referring to Warhammer Online being fairly new to the scene. As a new game, it is difficult to see what type of subscription base they will stay at. Every MMO should be prepared to deal with the fact that numbers will fluctuate tremendously in the first 6 months. This also isn't Dark Ages of Camelot 2. The game design is much more focused on PvP, and so they have greater balancing headaches to face than before.

It's kind of funny that I love Diablo II which is pretty much a grindfest, but dislike MMOs. Maybe something to do with the people thing... Diablo co-op was super fun. Have you tried playing MMOs with friends? It does help for you misanthropes that are incapable of dealing with regular human beings.

Also, if "regular human beings" are like most people in MMOs then remind me never to visit your country/city.

Purkake
It's probable that my perspectives are skewed, still not a MMO person, even if they have super special awesome stories.
Hurlshort
I've never understood the story complaint with MMO's. Turbine has always really engaged me with the story of their worlds. Asheron's Call had all sorts of great lore, you just had to go a bit out of the way to find it. Asheron's Call 2 really only had one cool thing, and that was cinematic chapters that you got to see after finishing the major dungeons. And Lord of the Rings Online has done nothing but enhance my enjoyment of Tolkien's work. It just take longer to unfold the story than RPG's and adventure games, because they are designed to be played over years, not weeks.
Purkake
Which is a bit of a problem for me. I'm not going to wait two years for the payoff or play 8h a day to see the awesome finally. MMOs are designed to not end, otherwise people would just ditch them after finishing them. You'd think this would be a bit of detriment to the story.
