Halo Hype

Alyx's constant monologues (while you were 'roleplaying' Freeman) in Episode 1 did not make for good narrative.

"I'm scared, Gordon" "Wow, Gordon, look at that!" "Gordon, look out!" "I'm okay, Gordon!" "Only a bit longer, Gordon" "We're going to make it, Gordon!" "Oh Gordon, don't stop!"

Real immersive.

Maybe I'm just biased because Alyx is a horrible character.

fps that i liked? No One Lives Forever 1 and 2. Its more complex than your average shooter, albeit not as complex as System Shock 2. I like games were i can customize and tweak things to perfectly suit the next situation im going into. That and the humor in NOLF was awesome! The russian jokes were hilarious i thought, everytime i went to read a report on a russian desk they were talking about either a friend getting shot about complaining about only eating cabbage, or how they hate the cabbage. haw haw! I really reccomend this game guys! No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In Harms Way

I concur. The NOLF games are pretty good...and funny. :ermm:

I liked the story of λ.

I liked it too and thought that was what made it stand out.

I thought the story in itself wasn't particularly good. What made it stand out was the way the narrative was integrated into the game, instead of being developed through a cutscene or just written in the readme. It made you feel part of the story.

I didn't even play Half-Life until about five years after it came out, and it blew me away. (I still get vertiginous when Gordon climbs the cliff.) I think the first scene, where Gordon rides the monorail into that cool Black Mesa super-secret government organisation, where he is just an information-grunt, a white-coated beaker-pusher on the bottom-rung of the test-tube food-chain, only to have to show some innovation as well as talent with a gun to solve the story.

I think someone's in love. With Alyx.

My brother and I just went through (or tried to) Chapter 3 - Truth and Reconciliation - in Legendary coop. I didn't keep count of how many times we died and had to retry  Best part is that the insane difficulty is just part of the fun. I didn't feel frustrated at any time during the session. Unfortunately, we had to end the session without finishing the chapter, so we'll have to restart it next time. Which is fine by me.

What was the hardest spot? The hunters?

Are those the guys that last teleported down before the end of the first part? We took those guys out in one go.

We were stuck at the first checkpoint once you get on the ship, with the lightsaber jerks. They're easy to kill on their own, but overwhelming chaotic action = awesome. 20+ tries, we didn't make it to the next checkpoint :D

People often fumble at the hunters, 'cos almost no one seems to know that a pistol bullet to the exposed rear kills them in one hit.

That part is fun. And fairly hard if you try hard to keep as many marines alive as possible. It is relatively easy to find a followable pattern to the yellow elites and the cannon fodder dies virtually to almost anything, but when you actually try it out, there's a constant chaos going on and nothing works as was supposed to. I like the randomness factor that plays in - no encounter is ever the same.

I've never been much of a fan of Halo, the level design is crap, the gameplay is too slow, and the multiplayer was a joke.

If Halo had been a PC game and not a Console game at release, it would have been passed over as being "just another FPS", which is from my humble knowledge how it was recieved by the PC gaming public, alot of console gamers with PC's did buy it tho'.

It did give console gamers the first chance to experience a FPS that was playable and worthwhile.

Halo 1 was great fun on the Xbox. It didn't bring any NEW element to the table, but it had a good graphics, a big world, great soundtrack, above avarage story and most importantly: FUN gameplay that worked well. While the fanboys are trying to claim that is the "first" in that or "the best" in the other, one can simply instead enjoy a high-quality FPS for a console.

Personnaly, I love it because of the EPIC story and cinematics and the music. Not the graphics.

But playing Halo 2 with some friends and generally pwning is fun as well. :aiee:

Hey, not all epic heroes are tragic, despite the archetype.

I wouldn't mind though.

No way would they slaughter the golden goose. But seeing as how completely faceless Master Chief is, it wouldn't be difficult to kill off the character and bring in a new, functionally identical replacement. Perhaps a clone.

I suppose thats another reason people love it so much, THEY are the master chief, not some guy with a goatee. It gives them the same logic as revan fanbois.

I agree with the topic starter, Halo puts me to sleep. Fighting 'the flood' is the most boring thing ever and they take up a massive part of the game, Not to mention the repetitive levels.

Halos one good thing was the multilayer which is completely ruined in the second game by the bad maps and crappy weapons. Plasma sword may look cool but it really takes the fun out of the game when someones using it.

Not everyone loves it, but most that play it do.

Its not unique, but the story is and the music pwns. When I get a game, I look for cool effects, epic story and setting, and good music. Halo pretty much gave me all of that.

You probably don't look for those things when trying a game, so its only natural you either don't like the game like me, or like it for different reasons.

I have never seen a game EVERYONE loves.

Well Halo is too simplistic for a computer. there are a small number of guns, enemy ai is minimal, and there is little that makes it that complex other than the story.

The 'story' is far from complex.

I enjoyed Halo actually, even on PC, mainly for the multiplayer. I still play Halo 1 every now and again.

I borrowed a copy of Halo 2 from a friend and am playing it using the controller.

At first I was shooting mostly at the floor and ceiling and walls. Then I slowly got used to it and my shots flew in the general direction of the enemy. A few hours later and my accuracy had improved. I was able to hit close enough to the enemy to make it past the first mission.

Though my favorite weapon is the energy sword since I don't really have to aim. Just run/evade close enough for that one hit kill.

The trick seemed to be taking a slower, more deliberate approach to aiming. I was used to having the mouse move quickly from one target to another but slowing down, taking my shots carefully seemed to help.
