I'm a little surprisd about Petrino. But it does fit the trend of the exodus of coaches who left college jobs for the NFL quitting to return to the college ranks.

Apparently, the jerk didn't even bother to tell his players that he would be leaving. They found out via a spokesman.

College guys haven't had much luck in the NFL lately. As best I can recall, there hasn't been a real success story for a college head coach moving to the pros since Jimmy Johnson. I'm guessing there are several reasons why these guy end up back in the college ranks. Control is one-- it's much easier to command the respect of your players when they're 19 and non-multi-millionaires. The workload is lower. It's far easier to build a consistent winner in college than it is in the pros. And, related to that last point, the skill that most determines college success-- salesmanship in recruiting-- is of no use whatever in the NFL. You actually have to, you know, be a good coach.

Those of you that want to see the Giants vs. Patriots and do not have the NFL network are in luck, it seems that both NBC and CBS will be showing the Patriots chance for immortality. Not only are they trying to be the first team since the 1972 Dolphins to go through the season undefeated, but they will also be the only team to win all 16 games in a regular season, Brady and Moss also have a chance to break and/or tie all time records as well.

Playoff predictions.. anyone?

AFC WILD CARD WEEKEND:

(5) Jacksonville over (4) Pittsburgh

(3) San Diego over (6) Tennessee

NFC WILD CARD WEEKEND:

(6) Washington over (3) Seattle

(5) New York Giants over (4) Tampa Bay

Three road teams winning? I will most likely get 1 or 2 wrong.

WHat, no points? heh, I'll play though. The playoffs is where the NFL starts to get a lot more interesting.

AFC WILD CARD WEEKEND:

(5) Jacksonville over (4) Pittsburgh I will take the Jags also. I like Big Ben and he had a good year, but the Steelers are really bunged up and the jags are playing very well. I wouldn't put any money on this one though, I could easily see the Steelers coming out and pummeling the Jags into dust.

(3) San Diego over (6) Tennessee San Diego as well. Bad start, strong finish. Great running back, mediocre qb but good enough. Marty is gone. This is not the same team that the Pats crushed in week 2 or whatever.

NFC WILD CARD WEEKEND:

(6) Washington over (3) Seattle I'll take Seattle. I'll give the Redskins a lot of credit for dealing with a really awful sitution and making it into the playoffs, but Seatlle is a better team. Inspiration can only take one so far.

(5) New York Giants over (4) Tampa Bay I'll take Tampa. Yes, the Giants looked good against New England, but a lot of bad teams have looked good against New England this year. Playing the Pats seems to get everyone wound up and playing above their heads in the second half of the season. Manning will throw four interceptions in the first half and that will be that.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Jaguars and Chargers in the AFC. Both of these are rematches of fairly recent games. I don't expect much to be different. Although I don't expect SD to cover the 9-point spread-- Tennessee's defense will keep them in the game, and probably repay Indy for letting them into the playoffs by injuring a Chargers' starter or two.

Giants and Seahawks in the NFC. NYG should be able to dominate the line of scrimmage with their bigger OL and dangerous DL enough that their weakness in the secondary won't matter much (as long as they double-cover Galloway, there's nobody else to scare them). There's probably enough game film on Todd Collins now so that defenses can prepare specifically for him. He'll start coming back to earth, and the Redskins' superior running game won't be enough to keep up as Hasselbeck and Seattle's spread offense exploits the Redskins' poor depth in the secondary.

Except the Giants aren't a bad etam, and certainly aren't worse than TB. They had a better record depsite a much tougher schedule, and division. TB, outside of Garcia, isn't that scary. Garcia barely beat the Giants last year depsite helming a much better Philly squad than TB.
