Maria Caliban
I've never finished this game. In fact, I just finished Vault City and this is the furthest I've ever gotten. Questions: I've sunk 100 points into melee, is this skill useless? The best melee weapon so far is the spear from my original village. On the other hand, I've picked up all sorts of neat guns. About when should I expect to get the car working? Does time matter at all in this game? I've hit one quest with a time limit and that's it. "When is this out. I can't wait to play it so I can talk at length about how bad it is." - Gorgon.
Sand
When you get to more technologically advanced cities you should get better melee gear. You should expect to get the car working when you have all the parts for it and bribed a good mechanic to do it. Hopefully you finished Vault City without destroying Gecko . Some quests have time limits while others do not. The main quest does not have a time limit. Pop
There's only one quest with a real time limit, and that's Modoc's missing child / farmhouse quest. It's a real pain in the ass unless you know exactly what you're supposed to do. As far as melee goes, it's certainly not as varied as small guns, but once you get the super sledge you'll do pretty well, considering. Tip: find a combat knife. Better than the spear, uses less AP. I was always kinda disappointed that melee isn't creatively inserted into the game like unarmed was (boxing title, kung fu challenge, etc.) Goddamnit, I've suddenly gotten the urge to revive my Van Buren PnP. *addendum - Re:car - If you're playing an unpatched version of Fallout 2, you should be able to just pay Smitty 2,000 chips and get the car, without snagging the part from Gecko. Gorth
Unfortunately, one of the best melee weapons (The Mega Power Fist) in the game is using your hand-to-hand combat skill (if I remember correctly). Otherwise, the Ripper (Sp?) is quite nice. Using a Laser Pistol and the Ripper Chainsword in combat, I could create a pretty good imitation of my Imperial Guard Captain... Maria Caliban
As usual, I'm playing a good guy, so I couldn't let those walking lightbrights die. Right now, I'm looking for the Full Cell Controller as I already have the Regulator and Full Cells. I've done all the quests for Gecko - fixed the plant and optimized them - but I'm trying to finish an unlisted quest to get them ore. While I was there, I used a stolen requisition log to get me a plasma particale something or another chip. I assume it's like buying the lim-lim in PS:T, where this action will eventually make sense to me. Good to know the game lets me do melee/h2h and still be viable. "When is this out. Sand
You should be able to get a decent melee weapon in Broken Hills or New Reno. Also you should be able to get the necessary car parts fairly soon if you do some explroation. Maria Caliban
So I'm in Broken Hills at night and wander into the prision. I talk to the mutant guy there and buy some brass knuckles off him. He says, "Now get the hell out," and I'm like "Cool dude, I'm leaving." Then he goes aggro and unloads his fricken Howletzer into me. Stupid, damn mutant. "When is this out. Gorth
Wasn't there some "Floating Text"'s above the prison guards, generally telling you to not go in there in the first place? I seem to remember being shredded, just because I walked past the door opening and one of them could see me. They don't really encourage visitors and the guys behind bars more or less deserve to be there. You may or may not discover why they are there. I never did try the prison break thing after my first nasty surprise... Edited April 11, 2007 by Gorth “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Musopticon?
Find a sledgehammer. You can find one in Modoc the earliest. It's a decent weapon before rippers(New Reno, Sierra Army Base) and cattleprods(Broken Hills). Melee build is not that good build though, it is definetly doable since the game is pretty easy, but hth and especially guns would have been a better option. The former never runs out of ammo and you don't need weapons(just a lot of points) and the latter offers a huge amount of options and specialities and is generally what the game is intended to be played on. With melee, you are stuck in doing the same thing over and over again. And decapitations get boring after a while. Not to mention your companions hit you much more often than with other options. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. Atreides
I'm not convinced about close range combat in Fallout. Running towards a Deathclaw doesn't exactly make sense to me. I had lots of fun shooting the kneecaps off fast creatures, hobbling them and then their brain bucket as they hobble towards me. Spreading beauty with my katana. Slowtrain
I always found melee and unarmed to be complimentary to one of the firearm skills but not a replacement for them What I usually did was pair either melee or unarmed with a big guns character, since big gun users tended to be pretty buff by default. Melee and Unarmed are useful to offset some of the liabilties of the big guns as well. Unarmed has a lot more use in quests and things then melee does, although blinding people with the ripper was always fun. Both melee and unarmed get a lot more crits than the gun skills. The super sledge is one one of the best weapons in the game and by taking the right perks and traits it can be reduced to an AP cost of 1. Not bad. Pretty awesome. edit: However, charging into the teeth of a enclave patrol waving a super sledge is not going to keep you alive long. Skynet
Small guns and energy weapons are by far the best combat skills. Unarmed, melee, and (to a degree) big guns are merely interesting alternatives. You have chosen the hard path, but don't worry. Just be sure to get the best armor and the perk that gives you extra HP (is it Lifegiver?). Also, be sure to recruit the best buddies, namely Sulik, Cassidy, and Marcus. "Who could blame Skynet? Spider
Improved Power Fist + Power Armor + Quicker HTH + Slayer = lots of dead enemies. It holds it's own against any other weapons. (iirc, Slayer is stronger than Sniper, Slayer being automatic with Sniper being dependent on a luck roll or something like that)
Slowtrain
(to a degree) big guns are merely interesting alternatives. I kinda agree with that if you are talking FO, due to the very limited number of Big Guns. But even in FO, if you built your pc properly Big Guns were the most devestating force in the game. You had to understand the game systems well to make it work though. I had one pc that wiped out the entire Bos with the submachine gun. Imagine if she had been using the minigun instead! Which was the weapon she was built for; the wipe out of the BoS with the submachine gun was just a lark to see if I could do it. In Fo2, coupled to the right character build, Big Guns were capable of laying waste to entire areas. I never found a more effective combat pc than a big gun specialist in FO 2. Maria Caliban
You made Broken Hills hostile on you? You won't be able to get Markus. Because I know who Markus is... No, I didn't make Broken Hills go hostile; they hired a psychotic guard for their prison. If this is the way he treats visitors, I'd hate to see what he does with the inmates while no one is looking. Lokey
Scored a crit of 1800 damage once with the Vindicator Never crit with a rocket launcher that I can recall though, that might be crazier. Super sledge is some good fun, but it's really annoying how you hit someone than they slide far enough away you need about 3 AP to get to them for another hit. Lokey
Marcus is definitely entertaining, it's just hard to keep him alive when you go against enemies with auto-fire or the really big guns. Then I tend to go Vic, Skynet and Myron so I can be as scummy as I want (Vic with sniper or gauss, Myron with a needler or one of the energy pistols--nothing like a double dose of Jet in Myron...you can only do that once with Cassidy) Just what I needed, another forum to keep up with.
