Hell Kitty Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 I just got done reading a thousand hours worth of Star Wars slash. I can feel my intelligence growing. Might be a tumor, though.

She's simply more experienced than I am (being 30 years older can do that to a person).
alanschu Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 I have mixed feelings on dialogs. If they're spoken, I'd rather not see text because almost always there's an error in the text. There is no dialog text in Half-Life 2 (in my install) and I love it. Characters say their part and things move on. Games are becoming more and more like interactive movies, and I never watch a movie with subtitles enabled. I agree about NWN2's cutscenes. Not only are they long-winded, but they're chained together in some places. You can't leave the computer to do something else because the game requires input once in awhile. So there I sit waiting to be able to do something again. Clicking through the dialog works, but that's a lot of clicking. In future expansions I hope they shorten the cutscenes to something more like Baldur's Gate 2, which I feel were appropriate length. They conveyed what was happening and didn't require all day to do it. Part of me hopes Dragon Age will have the option to disable text so that we listen to what's being said, but can offer text responses. This was possible in Diablo 2, a relatively old game. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You can't get rid of subtitles in NWN2?
Arkan Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 The best example of 'too much fluff' was when the one npc gives the history of the Blood War. Most of that was unnesseccary word vomit that added nothing (or very little) to the story that was being told. In fact, i'd wager that even those who actually like PST (like me) probably skimmed a lot of that dialogue because the fellow was just regurating word vomit which is very gross. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's what immediately jumped to mind. I liked the conversation because I had never seen such a setting, and I wanted to know all I could, especially since it was so vastly different, and at the same time part of the same "world" as FR. I can definately see why people would consider it a tad wordy, though. "Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger." - Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials "I have also been slowly coming to the realisation that knowledge and happiness are not necessarily coincident, and quite often mutually exclusive" - meta

Tigranes Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 I loved the Blood War dialogue. I usually skim read it after the first couple of times, but I have fairly good memory and I do that with most games. The point was that he was, as far as I remember, an OPTIONAL npc and an OPTIONAL dialogue. 1/ At any poitn you can terminate the long dialogue and say 'goodbye', can't you? 2/ You never have to talk to him. 3/ It was, I believe, the Symposium. The setting prepared you for lots of lore. Pretty much, it was like going to an Elder Scrolls Library and finding about 50 books, except they weren't crap like most of the ES books are (seriously, 13-year-old-Tolkien-fan-fantasy). I have no idea why you could pick on this to complain. Sure, PS:T had way too much dialogue; I think someone arguing this would have much better luck with pointing out stuff that everybody does come across. And i would agree. But I don't think PS:T should have been made any differently. With less text and more discipline it might have been a better game, and certainly a better sale; but like a wild genius or an uncultivated gem, PS:T as it is is a wonderful game and unique in its own right, so for those who love it it is certainly one of its kind. In the perspective of Black Isle it might have been better to make PS:T more marketable and disciplined - but for gaming and for games, no. Pop Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 I remember a few parts being unskippable (like the NWN-style interchapter movie before the Crossroads siege ), but I never had much problem with the concept of wordy cutscenes in the first place. Cantousent Posted December 7, 2006 Posted December 7, 2006 I'm quite the opposite. I read the dialogue quickly and then left click to hit the next passage or my dialogue options. I don't like having to wait for the voice over work. Some of them sound sexy to me, including Neeshka in her own whiny way. Still, I just can't sit through the voice over after I've read the text. Morgoth Posted December 8, 2006 Author Posted December 8, 2006 Read the reprinted 1Up preview of Dragon Age! Very interesting read. I particularly like how they're trying to make combat more visceral this time around. Rain makes everything better.
Xard Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 (edited) "When we started concepting what Dragon Age's combat would be, we wanted to get a tight visual reference for the combat team," he says. "So myself, [lead animator] John Santos, and a couple others got a bunch of swords and shields and sticks and stuff and went to the parkade--the parking lot of one of Edmonton's malls--and set up a video camera on the second floor, looking down, so we could film it from the game point of view. We were out there hitting each other and going, 'I think the shield bash should be like this!' as a bunch of people across the street watched from their balcony with binoculars. Then a woman in a pickup truck came and said, 'What are you doing? This is private property!" and...well, let's say she escorted us off the premises." Heh Promising. "Have you ever seen that HBO series Rome? Take a look at the gladiator fight in episode 11 and you'll get a good idea of what we're thinking of." Gromnir Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 (edited) "Promising. " really? use film of a bunch o' half drunk and uncoordinated kanadian nerdlings sporting trash can lids and broom handles to be basis for visual representation o' combat for da? "promising?" has you seen the bioware crew? to gets a similarly unathletic group you would have to scour north america for polio victims... or maybe go to a comic book convention. ... if biowarians want feel of live combat, maybe they shoulda' simply watched a kanadian junior hockey game. 'course da would then probably lose teen rating. HA! Good Fun! Xard Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 (edited) I ment they're at least doing those moves before animating attack moves in game, so there's not going to be totally stupid animations. Besides, I really doubt they use their home-made moves in game Edited December 8, 2006 by Xard How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective.
