If you don't live by the standards of others...

Do others have the right to persecute you for not living to their standards?

Say you live by your own standards in a society with a different set of standards. And you neither harm or obstruct anyone else. Do you still have an obligation to abide by the rules of those others and be punished if you don't follow them? What right to others have to impose their set of rules upon you if your own set of rules don't harm anyone?

It's social contract time, ladies and gentlemen. You sign up to abide by a common set of rules as the price for living in civilisation. Because, basically, civilisation means toilet paper and being able to do more than scamper through the underbrush hunting for pale white grubs to eat and shrieking at leopards.

So, yeah, if you run contrary to those common laws then you get spanked. Who writes those common laws is a huge part of all human history of course. Most of us feel that to be bound by the laws you should have at least the chance to influence them. Hence democracy.

Most right-wingers I know who get moralistic with 'degenerates' say that they are offending the laws of God. I don't buy this.

I'm a crybaby liberal, apparently. =]

Well, unless of course those "standards" are accepted laws in the society you live in...as Wals was so kind to point out.

The main point there being that if I don't believe in that stuff, it does not and should not apply to me, in any way.

And the legislation of faith is becoming tiresome...

You'd have thought that having tried to ban:

Drink

Prostitution

Drugs

Suicide

and failing miserably every time we'd understand that you can't legislate against vice. It's like trying to insult mist. Or throw tennis rackets at the smell of cheese. People have to believe its wrong.

I'm about as liberal as I can get anyway.

I'll obey common sense laws.

anytime anyone tells me I shouldnt be doing something because it offends god I either laugh or say prove it.

I end up screwing with their heads and convincing them I want to go to hell.

I have never been able to respect religious peoples beliefs. It's just not in me. I mean, I'll take them seriously on any issue if they have actual facts for it, but man, God is such a cop-out way to explain why you feel someway.

I mean, that's like saying "why did you steal that bike?" "because of MAGIC!"

And as somebody once said to me, if you don't like here, why don't you just leave ?...

Hahaha, they actually tried to ban suicide???

Sorry, I really shouldn't laugh...but I did.

Suicide used to be illegal in the UK. So if you got found, say collapsed on the floor from pills and they got you to hospital they had to charge you if you came through.

This sounds clearly daft but is it really any smarter to treat a heroin addict like a criminal? I'm not sure myself. Maybe it makes sense that you should have the power to compel them to get help, just like an ebola victim.

You see, I don't work with any exact boundaries of the law because I wasn't consulted when the god damn laws were made. No, instead nameless, faceless politicians, the so called protectors of the moral majority decide what is right and what is wrong. I mean come on. I govern my life around my own personal code of ethics, and I suggest that you do the same. That way if, within the constructs of my own morality, I were to do something that is considered illegal, so be it. I feel no guilt whatsoever and futhermore, if I were to buckle under the social weight of the system by adhering to laws that I do not truly believe in then I would be extinguishing the very fire of patriotism and individuality.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

So... if you decided to murder someone that would be fine BECAUSE YOU SAY SO? :(

Agreeing with the chap that brought up the Social Contract.

Whom also seems to be the chap that wanted to play CC3 with me o:)"

Yes. How does... whuh?

CC3 is about relentless slaughter. That's only part of the social contract in some very specialist societies.

I think the logic there is to protect those who are vulnerable from themselves.

Sure jail probably isn't the best place for them: more like some sort of mental health unit. Just as vagrants need to be given food and shelter, rather than thrown in the lock-up. Same logic.
