I split this from my vs thread.

I just realised that the robot overlords could control our numbers in a more enjoyable way than the Terminator scenario. Think Fry's Lucy Liu in Futurama.

Pleasure/love golems/androids. I used pleasure/love because different people will be in for different things but the outcome's the same. Your soulless soulmate or the perfect pasionate lover(s). The robots will use the basic urges life has embedded in us through the years to control our numbers.

Of course that raises the question whether an artificial lover is any less real than a human one. I could imagine the perfect romance in every way, but then I'd look into their eye as a window into my soul and feel the emptiness echo.

Alan Turing the Brittish mathematician said if you could have a conversation with AI and you couldn't tell the differentiate it with a human you're onto something. Expand that to interaction, expression and emotion.

If an android replicates everything perfectly - till one of the most complex emotions of all - love is it really love? Could you love it/him/her/them?

Put it this way - if you met someone and found your soulmate, would it matter to you if you found out that it was soulless? Would you change your mind? Would it matter?

I don't think the issue would matter so much for sex unless your intention is reproduction. People enjoy porn and erotica just fine without any emotional attachment. The perfect avenue of release (no pun intended. Seriously.) with no strings attached. Or does it?

For some people this could probably prove a pretty good thing.. severly handicapped or mentally ill people (who needs love, but is generally on the less recieving end)! this of course leads to the moral question of it being ok to brush away this particular problem by giving these individuals artificial "soulmates"...

I don't believe however that it's a good idea for "normal" people to indulgence in deep love commitments with these kind of surrogates .. we are already going towards a society that customizes life in every detail! I still wanna be a romantic on this issue!

If it's artifical, my gut feeling would be that it's fake. That said, I wouldn't care if others indulged or not.

But you know, so long as I got to be a chuvanist and let it do all the house work and stuff... :D

HK47: Commentary: It is not possible to destroy the master. It is suggested that you run while my blasters warm, meatbags.

Bastila to Revan: You are easily the vainest, most arrogant man I have ever met!

Canderous to Bastila: Insults? Maybe if your master had trained your lightsaber to be as quick as your tongue you could have escaped those Vulkars, you spoiled little Jedi princess!

That's a good point.

And ugly people. Anti-socials. Diseased. Impotents. Societal outcasts. Fetishists. Old people. Misanthropes. Collectors. People with overly high standards. People wanting a harem... The list goes on. But why project the issue onto the less fortunate? (and really, do you not think that these problems will be solved long before we perfect love androids?)

The most obvious market for android lovers is right here in the heart of "normal" society: people who don't want the commitments, repsonsibilities, and/or sacrifices of real relationships. Don't think these people exist? Look at the teenage pregnancy and divorce rates.

If android lovers were perfected in the morrow, human relationships will be in deep doo-doo.

Some answers could be found and more questions asked after watching these :

Steven Spielberg's A.I.

Riddley Scott's Blade Runner

And Star Trek TNG Episodes "The Naked Now" and, to a lesser extent, "The Ensigns of Command".

They all deal with robot lovin' at some point. I'm sure many can think of other movies/shows.

Which is why I wouldn't want them on the market! if society reduces you to a spoiled child even in adult decisions like love, then we are truely ****ed..

but offering it as a sort of public service (in Denmark it was semi-legal to hire prostitutes to handicapped at some point, in fact some institutions still do it). And maybe we could eliviate some of the most serious sexrelated problems, like rape etc... but not going that far I still believe people who aren't able to interact socially, due to physical and/or severe mental disabilities, could be helped alot this way...

and no I don't believe we would've solved that problem before robots.. unless we allow future parents to genetically alter their children before pregnancy or birth!

That is already possible and available through services in some countries. Only it is for the super rich.

Quite disturbing.

Only with regards to any possible side effects. It's not like parents would engineer their children in negative ways.

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

you've hit on the disturbing social trend of the new millennium ... the Bridget Jones Syndrome, or more people living alone. Would this exacerbate the problem? Possibly (or maybe it would just alleviate some of the symptoms of loneliness). Would it encourage a more egocentric attitude on future populations? More likely. The only reason (outside religion) to compromise one's interests in for a partner or family (and even then, there are exceptional people who are just thoroughly selfish).

Still, if it removed the demand for prostitution, and thereby helped remove the sex-slave-trade, then it would be worth it (doubtful: the humans would just be sold cheaper to undercut the competition: after all, they cost nothing).

What about an artificial person to act as a submissive for aggressive people to beat up? icon9.gif

The question is "what do we want them to do?" .. and to what degree??

I still think that they could serve as supplement to alleviate many problems! and not counting organized crime they could provide a good service doing so .. not a replacement, just a supplement! sex for those who can't get it anywhere else, but not to replace social interaction ..

But if they are able to program them perfectly they could take over much of the social sector .. doctors, nurses etc .. especially when dealing with dangerous individuals, where innocent humans could get hurt.. say extreme mental hospitals!
