The funny thing is that when you see a law, for example, banning driving while blindfolded, you know the law was probably made because somebody was driving blindfolded.

Makes you wonder about this law:

It is illegal to walk across the Minnesota-Wisconsin border with a duck on your head.

And most laws here also get based on what happened. See the forum guideline update for example...

Our esteemed politicians can't seem to grasp this simple point, but the First Amendment protects our right to write something that annoys someone else.

It even shields our right to do it anonymously. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas defended this principle magnificently in a 1995 case involving an Ohio woman who was punished for distributing anonymous political pamphlets.

Really, I think even Child of Flame is safe here.

Also, I honestly think that the people they are targetting are those who are being annoying while making sure they are annonymous and there is no way to track them back... kinda like all those emails for viagra.

I wonder if I could make a case for my various internet names being just as much my names as my legal one. More people certainly know me by those than as 'James Thomas Griffith III'. Seriously.

Imma think you should rename yourself "Sally Can't Dance"

It appears that I have not yet found a sig to replace the one about me not being banned... interesting.

I would say you can as long as there is a papertrail back to you (even if it is hidden because you aren't allowing everyone to see everything) - just like anyone who has a nickname irl that they go by as opposed to the one on their birth cert.

More people in real life think my name is 'Jimmy' or 'Jim' rather than James because I've been using one or the other basically forever. o:)

Which is kind of what I meant.

Seriously though, because of the sheer amount of people on the internet there are probably more who know me by aliases.

Not like I'm particularly secretive with information anyway. I've posted my picture on several forums, if anyone asks I tell them where I live, hell sometimes I even hand my address out because it's so dang hard to find I really don't expect anyone without directions to do so.

Still wish ~Di would let on to where whe lives so I could walk over and say hello."

She just seems really paranoid to be quite frank.

She blathers about how it's because she likes to keep her gaming life and her work life seperate, yet whenever the subject of writing comes up she draws upon her years of experience and many published books for anecdotal examples.

She lives within 5-10 miles give or take a few. I'm tempted to start canvassing houses asking 'Are you from the internets?' it's not like there'd be a gigantic amount to go to out here.

Well, the US is bound to have plenty of bizarre laws...it's a huge country made up of a ton of states, and in each state you have counties, and in each county you have cities and towns. On each level you have people who are responsible for legislation. Not all of these people are geniuses. The amazing thing is it's one of the best systems out there. Take any country with a comparable amount of land and population, and they don't stack up.

Yes, I'm always thrilled to give details of my personal life to strangers over the internet, particularly those who are insulting and rude to me.

I think the wording should be changed from "annoying" to "harassing."

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

"I have also been slowly coming to the realisation that knowledge and happiness are not necessarily coincident, and quite often mutually exclusive" - meta

Di, I've been polite on these boards, and I've been insulting. I suppose the quoted post could be taken as an insult but it wasn't meant to be. I apologize if it was taken as such.

On being paranoid about releasing personal info over the internet.

The internet is a scary place, but just like anything else new, the media has generally ripped every single bad bit about it and reported on it and ignored all the 'safe' bits. Mostly because they aren't news. I'm of the opinion that there are good people and bad people on the internet in about the same proportion as real life, though they're generally more honest and/or abrasive because of the anonymnity, so may or may come off as worse than their real life counter parts. So yes, I believe you're paranoid, 'specially 'bout releasing personal information to someone with a face like mine, but understandably so.

Wanting to keep your gaming life and your author's life seperate would be no big deal to me, if you actually kept them seperate. The way you do it seems to be more a case of wanting to have your cake and eat it too. I remember PMing you when I first found out you were a writer asking you what you'd wrote/had published because I was interested in purchasing your work. It was polite, no hostility, just interested in reading the books of an internet person I'd talked to.

Also you already know plenty about my personal life to downright bury me if you wanted to.

I am just saying.
