I had always thought the drugs merely prolong life expectancy, augmenting the immune system as it degrades over time.

 

As for 1/100000 europeans being immune to hiv, thats a new one if that was so they'd be the basis for acure.

As I saw on the BBC there are a number of anecdotal cases of persons, for example sexworkers, who appear to be immune to the virus.

 

However, I am afraid that on balance I'd believe the hospital got the test result wrong in the first place. These things happen even in the best run places. :)

Well, it mentions in the article that you link to that the rates of deaths for both cancer and heart disease are falling...just that heart disease is falling faster.

I don't know about cancer being preventable (unless lung etc from smoking). As people live longer there are more ways for the system to start failing.

There are sex-workers in Africa that are exposed daily to HIV with seemingly no deleterious effects; also there have been a number of babies born to HIV positive mothers that have tested positive and then tested negative. All of these people are in serious long-term studies to help medicine understand the virus.
