Noceur Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 (edited) I'm not gonna pull a Bill Gates, though... Nobody will ever use more than 640kb my arse. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I bet someone has that framed somewhere. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> IBM did something similar back in the day... their CEO (or some other IBM bigwig) said that noone will ever need/use colour graphics. " Just imagine Pong without colours! Edited October 12, 2005 by Noceur
Guest Fishboot Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 No, that was what I said as well. You can cleary see the difference. Especially in contours. You see, that's the difference between Textures/Shaders and polygons... textures and pixelshaders don't alter/add geometry.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Just wanted to say that it's incredibly obvious in Doom 3 at short viewing distances. Just look at a barrel up close, or one of those ribbed plastic pipes. Applying pseudo-geometric texturing/shading effects is an art form unto itself, and a lot of it is hand-selecting which models in the world really need full-blown geometry and which ones can be faked. That much hands time by artists is money spilling onto the ground.

Ah well, I think normalmapping kicks ass. It's not the cure for cancer though
Guest Fishboot Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Ah well, I think normalmapping kicks ass. It's not the cure for cancer though <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Agreed, and there are many applications for which it is nearly "the last word"; shallow pseudo-geometry like bas relief, brickwork, detailing, etc. I'm curious about how much it costs to implement, though, given the process. I don't know if normal mapping requires a pure 10m+ AAA budget.
Calax Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Catgirls and school girl outfits should be implimented... I'd play a game with those... :looks around and slinks off: Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.
Musopticon? Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 ^Add in every comic clich kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. I had to fight against blood thirsty wolves and rabid penguins to get my food. Those who were too weak to survive were sent to Sweden. It has made me the man I am today. A man who craves furry hentai. So let us go and embrace the rustling smells of unseen worlds
SubBassman Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 (edited) Do you remember this game? It has no FMVs, its graphics are obsolete (if there's any), but it's still an enjoyable game with plenty of choices that have an effect on your progress. Can you guys still enjoy games with no graphics? Edited October 13, 2005 by SubBassman My huge NWN mod: Tortured Hearts I. And the sequel: Tortured Hearts II.
Epiphany Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Can you guys still enjoy games with no graphics? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No.
SubBassman Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 Can you guys still enjoy games with no graphics? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why? My huge NWN mod: Tortured Hearts I. And the sequel: Tortured Hearts II.
Epiphany Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Why? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Because the I play video games, not games.
SubBassman Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 Why? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Because the I play video games, not games. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, by "no graphics" I didn't mean a white (or black) screen. There are very good old games with poor graphics. (At least by modern standards) One example that comes to mind is Wasteland. It's an excellent game with simplified blocks that represent walls and whatnot. I think I'd still enjoy that game, despite its obsolete gfx. Another good example is the aforementioned Alter Ego. I played it yesterday for four hours. Problem is, many games try to sell themselves on graphics and there's nothing (or not much) behind it. (I'm not talking about Oblivion here) My huge NWN mod: Tortured Hearts I. And the sequel: Tortured Hearts II.
ShadowPaladin V1.0 Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 Graphics are fleeting. Gameplay is timeless I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. Deals like this kills development studios. 478327[/snapback]
Calax Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 Why else would FF7 still retail for about $40? Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition! Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.

It's boring to look at, and completely takes away from any immersive aspect I might have while gaming. Much like I don't buy games (rarely even play them) that don't support 16:9 and at least 480p in this current generation. Problem is, many games try to sell themselves on graphics and there's nothing (or not much) behind it. (I'm not talking about Oblivion here) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Graphics are what you look at for 15+ hours of your life. I don't care how great the story/gameplay is, if it's a visual nightmare, I lose interest. The color palette has to work and the visuals have to be such that it doesn't look like a VGA game on my TV.
