Archmonarch
What are the quintessential RPGs? Those that stick out in your mind above all others? What games should every RPG fan play before truly calling themselves a gamer? Note: I do not have enough experience to contribute, so this a blatant attempt to get tips for games I should play. And I find it kind of funny I find it kind of sad The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had

I have been thinking about trying out the Fallout series though..

Musopticon?
Akalabeth! No, not really. But a decent rogue-like, like ADOM or Nethack is a must. kirottu said: I was raised by polar bears. Baley
I enjoyed both Dark Sun games too. For a decent 3D rogue-like try Fate. Oh and I'd suggest Spiderweb's Avernum and Geneforge series.(alas I've only been able to play the demos)

Guest Fishboot
The answers to this kind of depend on how much one is interested in "RPG appreciation" (in which case you would want to play "historic games" even if they had problems or are now totally outmoded) or if you just want to cherry pick the best few games. As far as "RPG appreciation", I'd say (here's where I look on the Wikipedia CRPG chronology): Ultima I Rogue/Nethack Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy Wasteland The SSI D&D games Ultima Underworld Betrayal at Krondor Diablo Daggerfall Fallout Ultima Online Final Fantasy VII Baldur's Gate EverQuest PS:T Deus Ex Morrowind Provisionals: KotOR VTM:B World of Warcraft Edited September 7, 2005 by Fishboot
