Walsingham
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4184346.stm Bird flu is lethal. It is going to come to the UK. I'm stocking up on four weeks min emergency rations if it does. Tinned fish, meat, and rice. No going out if it kicks off in earnest. What are your views? "It wasn't lies. Child of Flame
Meh. We've had Sars and West Nile going around here for awhile now, didn't stop me from leaving the house and walking around outside. Have fun with you glass box.
Magena
What are your views? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I live in a fairly rural area, and chances are for it to affect me something drastic would have to happen. If I lived in the city, that would be another thing all together because of the closeness of everyone. Overall, I think there is some concern, but as with SARS, the potential problems cause people to take precautions which means that it won't end up being as bad as it could. To me it seems strange that we are having so many epidemics in such a short period of time.

Cantousent
Really, we worry about bird flu, mad cow disease, and a host of other problems but we're willing to drive the freeways. Walking down the street after dark in a big city is more dangerous than eating raw hamburger. SARS? It's killed... what? less than a hundred people? I understand that mobilizing the health community to combat these diseases has undoubtedly lessened the danger, but the danger was undoubtedly overstated by the media in the first place. Everyone anticipates the next pandemic, but pushing the panic button over west nile, bird flu, or mad cow just doesn't make sense to me. Darth Launch
It's not very British to panic about such things... I'm sure we're more than prepared for Bird Flu if it (God forbid) does hit us DL OO-TINI!

><FISH'>
We british tend to take a posotive view on things like this. We just keep saying to ourselves ''It will never happen to me''. Of course they take the same views with smoking, drinking, drunk driving and disorderly behaviour. So basically the british are just too stupid to care about anything that puts them, or others in danger.

213374U
Flu isn't really dangerous unless you have a serious lung condition or belong to a risk group (old people, babies, HIV), so I don't know what all the fuss is about. It's not like you can do something to prevent getting infected, either. I'd be more worried about the prices of chicken rising. A Bird Flu (or any influenza) is worth taking time to consider the implications: mainly because after it's spread, it's TOO LATE to do anything. Remember, the pandemic of 1917 killed more people than both World Wars; they exhumed some bodies that were buried in the permafrost of Alaska to analyze the virus (which also means that the US has stocks of it for use as a weapon): it was lethal in a large percentage of cases (more than half, iirc): drowned the victims with their own mucus in the lungs (lovely). We are also overdue for the next pandemic. And it's coming, and it will come from the hot zone (China and surrounds). Be a boyscout, now, while you still can ...
