When creating characters, I also urge players to look over which attributes and skills are used in conjunction with their displines. For instance, Dementation level 1 uses Charisma and Empathy. If you are buying that Discipline and want to use it, then you should probably invest points in Charisma and/or Empathy, etc.

And I am trying to keep this thread mainly about actual details of the game. I don't mind questions or discussion, but the other thread is lengthy and a bit divergent.

I thought Id just post what you wrote before about spending dots and freebies at character creation.

Here is so basic character creation help:

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

The character sheet gets filled in top to bottom, and is put into sections.

The very top portion covers the concept, and the most important area here is your nature and demeanor.  The book I sent you has a section called Archetypes, and you pick an Archetype for your Nature, and one for your Demeanor.  Your Nature reflects who you really are as a person.  (Also you aren't limited to these Archetypes, and you might come up with a new one like Scholar).  When you are really roleplaying your true Nature, you can request that I reward you with Willpower points which are quite handy.

Demeanor however reflects not who you truly are, but how you come across to the world.  If you are a Scholar, do you come across as a Curmudgeon or Pedantic?

In the attributes section, you will notice the first dot in every attribute has been filled in for free, because you can't have an attribute rating of zero.  Pick one group (Physical, Social, Mental) to focus on.  That group gets seven points to distribute amongst the three attributes in that category.  Then you choose a category to distribute five points and a category that gets three points.

You basically do the same with skills.  One group gets 13 points, then 9 and then 5

You get five points for backgrounds, and there are several backgrounds listed in the book.  I recommend that you spend a few points on the Generation Background.

You then get to put three points in Discplines.  The disciplines you can start with are determined by your Clan.

Then you spend seven points on your three virtues.  Your first point in each virtue is free since you can't have a virtue rating of zero.

Your Courage Rating then becomes your Willpower rating.  Your Conscience and Self-Control add up and become your Humanity rating.

Your 50 freebie points can buy dots in all catgories, but at different costs. There is a table on the lower right on page 104 in the core book:

Freebie point cost per dot

Attribute      - 5

Ability          - 2

Discipline      - 7

Background  - 1

Virtue          - 2

Humanity    - 1

Willpower    - 1

So buying 2 extra discipline dots would cost 14 freebie points, while buying 3 dots in an Attribute such as Manipulation would cost 15. The first points you get, the 13/9/5 and so on is are 1 point = 1 dot. this chart is only for freebie points

edit:

Terribly sorry Miss Darque, I meant no harm. Its just that the important stuff gets drowned in the flow of casual banter. People were asking about stuff we'd already posted in the other thread becasue they couldnt find it among those 20+ pages

So if we just post essential information here and talk in the other thread, itll all work out.

Ender, I changed the first name of my character. You can keep the last name on, but it's now Demetrius.

Okay, someone needs to explain this to me. I start with one dot in all my attributes, one dot in all three virtues, three dots to spend on attributes, and then fifty freebies? Is that right? Because the info in your first link, Ender, says somthing about 7 for primary, 5 for secondary, and 3 for tertiary. Now, how does that realate to my 50 freebies?

The way I did it (which I got from a PM from Ender because I asked the same thing) is you follow the book (ie. for the 3 Abilities column, you allocate 7, 5, and 3 dots for the collumns ranked 1 to 3), then after you follow the guidelines in the book for allocation, you add an ADDITIONAL 50 points, but based on the cost chart Kaftan posted.

In my case, keeping with the Abilities section, I added 7 dots among the Knowledge stats, 5 dots among the Talent stats, and 3 dots to the Skills dot. Then I allocated a few more of my 50 freebie points to those three stats, based on a 2 point cost.

Thanks, Anakin. That's how it looked to me also, but I wasn't sure.

Informing you that a link doesn't work is hardly spam.

No, let's see. You start with one dot in all your attributes (it makes no sense to have 0 INT unless you are JK5). Then you have to prioritize the attribute groups (social, mental, and physical) in the order you think is best/makes more sense for your character.

Let's say you prioritize like this: first physical, then social, then mental. Then you would have 7 dots to spend in the physical attributes (which makes a total of 10 dots since you have 1 free dot in each attribute which you can't assign anywhere else), 5 in social, and 3 in mental. You cannot mix and match, you must spend those points in the attributes according to the priorities you have chosen.

The process is similar with the abilities and advantages, only those don't have free dots, if you don't spend dots there, they stay at level 0. For your abilites you have 13 dots to spend in the first category, 9 in the second, and 5 in the third, again all according to the priorities you choose.

For the advantages, you have 3 dots to spend in Disciplines, 5 in backgrounds, and 7 for your virtues. Those are fixed and you cannot prioritize them. As you are playing as a Ventrue, I would suggest that you spend at least 3 of your virtue dots to decrease your generation, as Dominate is useless if you use it against a vampire of a lower generation than your own.

Now for Humanity, its value is equal to Conscience + Self Control, and Willpower is equal to Courage.

Note that we were talking about dots. Now, you can spend the 50 freebie points in whatever you want, according to the chart posted before. Thus, if you wanted to raise an attribute by one dot, it would cost you 7 freebie points, and so on.

Any more questions, post them. :nuke:

Yeah I got the dot allocations wrong. It's 7-5-3 for Attributes, not Abilities.

Well, I searched for a quick reference of what the abilities meant. After managing to get through the mislabeled porn links, I found one which helped me at least. You might find it useful.

Am I right in thinking there are no free points to give disciplines. That is, we only get dots by spending freebie points?

You get 3 dots to spend in Disciplines at character generation. You can increase the Disciplines further by spending freebie points.

One question; what generation should I choose? If my sire is, say ninth generation, does my character become a tenth generation childe when embraced? What could be a good generation? I also feel that my charcter is way too powerful with so many freebies. My concept of him was more of a gun-ho dude trying to understand his newly-gained abilities, than a gangrel powerhouse of brawn.

One more thing; which of the attributes should I spend my points to, if I wanted a character with not so much guile and strength, but one that has good metabolism and mucle structure, able to run vast distances and stand hardship. I understand gangrels gain fortitude as a discipline. That virtually make me a tank, something which I thoroughly abhor.

I didn't guess it would be this hard to create a character.

Ender said we're all 9th generation. I've got my character created. I'm just waiting to see how Ender wants it sent.

I never liked the generation system I think its much better the way they do it in Vampire: Requiem where the blood grows more powerful the older you get. I usually max out on generation since its the one thing you cant raise. Youre basicly stuck with your gen.

It sounds like its the "Stamina" attribute youre after and fortitude is very handy. I would just go ahead and do the character with the inevitable Gangrel fighting abilities like feral claws etc. and then roleplay you sort of "growing up" and learning to use it.

All Vampire are killers, its in their nature. So you shouldnt be afraid to create a character that can hold his own in a fight.

You can play as high as 9th Generation but you don't have to. 9th Generation vampires are more powerful, but you might not want to play 9th Gen because it makes you more high profile, not to mention a target for diaberlie. I happily played a 12th Gen for almost 4 years because I liked the underdog role.

You increase your generation by spending points on the generation background.

And I prefer that characters get sent to EnderNOSPAMAndrew at Gmail DOT com.

Thanks guys. I'm almost finished.

Sent the background to Ender. The sheet follows when I get the jist of it.
