I was always told to check the heel of the shoe. If the man only polishes the toecap, that tells you a great deal.

Ha. I don't usually polish my shoes at all. (It's all about conservation: of the shoes and of my time and effort. ) Generally, I manage to keep them in reasonably good condition between re-healings, and the nice cobbler always polishes them up very well. :D (And that's another reason for a pattered leather style, of which the brogue is an exception example.)

I barely know what shoes are, I buy/wear them so infrequently. Never have more than a couple pairs of shoes at one time, and they usually last me for years. Maybe three if you count flat sandals.

But my current (very old) tennis shoes are a pair of Asics that have gel glued into the soles, and they're the most comfy I've ever worn. They need replacing but I keep putting it off.

I have flat feet AND somewhat 'wide' feet so it can be hard to find shoes that don't either give me cramps in the arch or pinch my toes.

I wear size ladies 5 to 6 (US) depending on brand - or boys size 4ish..

@Kaftan - Size 10 mens in the US isn't that small. Depends a lot on how tall you are and body build. My brother's 6 foot 5 inches but very thin and narrow-boned w/size 10's - his feet look kind of dainty but not absurdly small for his ankles.

My husband is 4 inches shorter with larger bone structure (still pretty thin tho) and he wears a size 11.5-12 and looks like he wears boats.

What exactly is a brogue?

Personally I would say typo, but he might have something that is considered "brogue" where he is.

I see dictionaries are abstruce: a strange and mystical esoterica to you. It is even the first entry of the two homonyms.

I have about 23 pairs of shoes with me at college, and about 28 more at home. My favourite (at the moment) are a pair of pale green, sequinned ballerina flats. I suspect I am addicted.

Sneakers (Reebok mostly), US 14 (48.5  in Europe), which proves lucky for me since sports stores always have leftover big shoe sales when they drop the price by more than half sometimes.

p.s. Steve - Don't worry. Your feet's size is actually normal. I think US 13 is where they cut the line.

I am a size 11 US. I am 5'7", 5'8" on a good day. I have abnormally large feet and forearms, but because I'm so dang little it's still easy enough to find footwears.

I've been wearing Vans sneakers for quite some time now, I've been wanting to switch to a nice work boot for durability (I'm awful to my shoes), but they're just so damned expensive.

I think I bought some Hanbee trainers in Japan once. :- They were good, but not especially so, but then I get through shoes fairly quickly because I don't take good care of them.

When I wasa kid I really loved converse type takkies, because they were so simple you could just wear them 24/7, put them through anything. Even go swimming in them.
