Walsingham
I got confused there with Yeats' poem "The Second Coming" "TURNING and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity." Good for muttering when you want your subordinates to get worried. I just looked up The Hollow Men. Might have to memorise that one. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp. mkreku
Girls with guns. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I sure hope that's an air softgun or something of a small caliber, because the way she's holding it halfway against her shoulder/upper arm would mean a whole lot of pain if the kickback was powerful. I remember when these old women wanted to try skeetshooting at the shooting range I was working on one summer and one of the old women pulled the trigger on a shotgun before she had put it firmly against her shoulder.. The gun slid down along the arm, until it reached her elbow, where it stopped. A few minutes later, her entire upper arm was dark blue from bruising. She sure is pretty though. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. --John Stewart Mill-- "Victory was for those willing to fight and die. Intellectuals could theorize until they sucked their thumbs right off their hands, but in the real world, power still flowed from the barrel of a gun.....you could send in your bleeding-heart do-gooders, you could hold hands and pray and sing hootenanny songs and invoke the great gods CNN and BBC, but the only way to finally open the roads to the big-eyed babies was to show up with more guns." --Black Hawk Down-- MySpace: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=44500195

Hildegard
Let's take a glimps into the future of tanks ( nice tank Lucius but this is something far beyond that crap).......in the near future: Model Type: Kampfpanzer Leopard III Vehicle Type: Heavy Tank Crew: Three (Driver, Gunner, and Commander). Speed: Ground: 55.9 mph (90 kph) maximum road speed; 43.5 mph (70 kph) off-road. The vehicle is designed to traverse virtually all terrain and can climb at up to a 60% grade although at a much slower speed (About 10% of maximum road speed). It can also climb barriers and ford trenches. The vehicle can also handle side slopes of up to 30%. Maximum Range: Fuel Cell Models: 621.4 miles (1000 km) Nuclear Models: Effectively Unlimited (5 years.) Statistical Data: Height: 9.3 feet (2.79 meters) to top of commander's cupola. Width: 13.3 feet (4 meters) Length: 25.6 feet (7.69 meters) not including gun barrel Weight: 79 tons (72 metric tons). Power Source: Fuel Cell System or Nuclear fusion turbine (Must be refueled every five years, otherwise effectively unlimited) Cargo Capacity: Minimal, enough for equipment with crew Sensors: Signaal Cougar Combination Air/Ground Millimetre Radar: Range of 8 miles (12.8 km); Capable of tracking up to 10 targets simultaneously, this radar serves to guide the 8 mm railgun in engaging aircraft (+2 to targeting aircraft and missiles with the railgun), and providing early warning of incoming aircraft and missile attacks; The radar can be programmed to shut off immediately if it detects an aircraft firing a missile, incase the missile is a radar-homing HARM type. The radar suffers from slightly reduced performance against ground targets (-20% to sensor rolls). Fully stabilized gun sight: A computer aided gunsight with up to x100 magnification and integral laser rangefinder. +3 to strike in direct fire under all conditions, and +3 to strike in indirect fire when standing still. Datalink transmitters: A powerful battlefield management communications system. Allows the tank to use targeting data from scout vehicles for firing the Anti-Tank missiles or Sabot rounds, and to provide targeting data to other vehicles. Bonus varies on the quality of the data being provided, but all data would allow the tank to fire over obstacles if the scout vehicle is in the right position. The normal effective battlefield range is 10 miles (16 km). Signaal Sabre ESM/ECM system: Combines ESM and ECM into one powerful system. The system can detect another radar system at 125% of the range of the transmitting radar. When jamming it causes -25% to detection but when it is active, other vehicles/ bases can detect that it is jamming, and some missiles will home in on jamming signals. Jamming also causes a -3 penalty to all radar guided weapons. Thermo-Imager: range of 2 miles (3.2 km). Finds the infra-red radiations of things that are warm. Also enables pilot to see in smoke, shadows and darkness. Two Periscopes: Have up to x100 magnification for commander and driver to view out of while maneuvering the vehicle. Nightvision Optics: Range: 2,000 ft (609 m). Uses light amplification to make a picture. Emits no light but will not work in absolute darkness. System can be dazzled (but not burned out, compensates within a single round) by sudden bright lights but does not physically blind the user. Laser Targeting/Rangefinder System 41,333 feet (12,400 meters). Special Notes: Tank is fully NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protected, and all equipment is hardened against EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model Type: T-212UM1 Vehicle Type: Main Battle Tank Crew: Three (Driver, Gunner, and Commander). Underwater: Can be equipped with snorkel to run underwater down to 16.4 feet (5.0 meters) Maximum Range: 497 miles (800 km) plus up to 217.5 miles (350 km) more with a large strap-on rear fuel tank that is ejected before going into battle. Statistical Data: Height: 7.15 feet (2.18 meters) to top of commander's cupola. Width: 18.33 feet (3.59 meters) Length: 28.9 feet (8.8 meters) not including gun barrel Weight: 65 tons (59 metric tons). Power Source: Gas Turbine Engine. Cargo Capacity: Minimal, enough for equipment with crew Sensors: Anti-Aircraft Radar: Range of 10 miles (16 km); Capable of tracking up to 10 targets simultaneously, this radar serves to guide the 10 mm Railgun in engaging aircraft (+2 to targeting aircraft and missiles with the 10 mm Railgun), and providing early warning of incoming aircraft and missile attacks; The radar can be programmed to shut off immediately if it detects an aircraft firing a missile, incase the missile is a radar-homing HARM type. The radar is highly ineffective against ground targets (-60% to sensor rolls.) Quadrant sight for long-range targeting of Sabot rounds: +4 to firing the long-range Sabot rounds only, when the vehicle is not moving. Data-interlink transmitters: For using targeting data from scout vehicles for firing the Anti-Tank missiles or Sabot rounds. Bonus varies on the quality of the data being provided, but all data would allow the tank to fire over obstacles if the scout vehicle is in the right position. The normal effective battlefield range is 5 miles (8 km). Full Infrared viewing mode: Range of 2 miles (3.2 km), with IR searchlight (+3 to detecting targets with IR when in use, however, +3 to detecting the T-12UM1 with IR equipment when in use, as well.) Two Periscopes: Has up to x100 magnification for commander and driver to view out of while maneuvering the vehicle. Visual targeting sight with same magnification possible for gunner. Laser targeting system for main gun: range of 3,000 meters. Special Notes: Tank is fully NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protected, and all equipment is hardened against EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model Type: M1A5 Abrams Vehicle Type: Main Battle Tank Crew: Three (Driver, Gunner, and Commander). No picture sorry...... Speed: Ground: Cruising speed on land is 70 mph (112.6 kph) on roads and 60 mph ( 96.6 kph) off road maximum. The vehicle is designed to traverse virtually all terrain and can climb at up to a 60% grade although at a much slower speed (About 10% of maximum road speed). It can also climb barriers and ford trenches. The vehicle can also handle side slopes of up to 30%. Underwater: Can be equipped with snorkel to run underwater down to 15 feet (4.6 meters) Maximum Range: 700 miles (1126.5 km) Statistical Data: Height: 9.5 feet (2.9 meters) Width: 10.8 feet (3.3 meters) Length: Main Body: 27.2 feet (8.3 meters) and with Gun Forward: 34.5 feet (10.5 meters). Weight: 72.5 tons (65.8 metric tons) Power Source: Fuel Cell System Cargo Capacity: Minimal storage space in pilots compartment; about three feet (0.9 m) in side dimensions for extra clothing, weapons, and personal items. Three carbines and one hand-held missile launcher with four loads each are stored in a compartment in the crew compartment Sensory Equipment: Sensory equipment is mounted on a retractable mount that can be extended 6.6 feet (2 meters) to extend sensors when hull down. The tank carries all standard equipment of a robot vehicle plus this special equipment: Radio/ Video Communications: Long range, directional, has a range of 500 miles with short range directional radio of 5 miles (8 km). Laser Targeting System: Range is 2 miles (3.2 km) and gives an additional +1 to strike with long range weapons. Combat Computer/ Targeting Computer: Assist in the tracking of targets. Full Life Support: Protects crew, troops, and vehicle from heat and radiation and gives a breathable atmosphere inside the tank for up 48 hours in vacuum and three weeks with scrubbers. Spotlight: Range: 600 feet (182.9 meters) Thermo-Imager: Range: 2,000 ft (609 m). Finds the infrared radiations of things that are warm. Also enables pilot to see in smoke, shadows and darkness. Nightvision Optics: Range: 2,000 ft (609 m). Uses light amplification to make a picture. Emits no light but will not work in absolute darkness. System can be dazzled by sudden bright lights but does not physically blind the pilot. P.S. the future looks rosy for the military industry, nice tanks, wouldn't you agree 11XHooah...... Walsingham
You're all bonkers. The Chinese tank wins because it carries active countermeasures against guided weapons. Without active countermeasures you are toast for any halfwit in cover who decides to take a pop at you with a missile. So your fancy multi-million dollar western MBTs will be shot to pieces long before they get a sniff of the opposition. With countermeasures, you go back to being quite scary, because then you are only vulnerable to another big gun. Like what goes on a tank. Bloody clever, the Chinese. Incidentally, this same point has come up regarding big gun battleships. Guided weapons are great, but can be shot down. An old fashioned bruiser battleship, like the Missouri can sit patiently still while her escorts shoot down incomings, then stroll into range and wipe out the opposition in a handful of minutes. ~~ Talking about that girl, you boys are showing your age. In this day of aerobics and advanced hair care it is only a foolish man who judges a chick from behind. For all you know, she has a face like two slices of processed turkey stuck in a vice. Lucius
Yeah I read about the Type 98 countermeasures, including a laser system which tries to blind the optics of enemy anti-tank missiles locking on to them, forcing the turret to swing in the direction of the danger, and possibly damaging the eyesight of the hostile gunner as well.
