DURANGO, Colo. (Feb. 4) - A Colorado judge ordered two teen-age girls to pay about $900 for the distress a neighbor said they caused by giving her home-made cookies adorned with paper hearts.

The pair were ordered to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs after neighbor Wanita Renea Young, 49, filed a lawsuit complaining that the unsolicited cookies, left at her house after the girls knocked on her door, had triggered an anxiety attack that sent her to the hospital the next day.

Taylor Ostergaard, then 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitte, 18, paid the judgment on Thursday after a small claims court ruling by La Plata County Court Judge Doug Walker, a court clerk said on Friday.

The girls baked cookies as a surprise for several of their rural Colorado neighbors on July 31 and dropped off small batches on their porches, accompanied by red or pink paper hearts and the message: "Have a great night."

The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking.

It reported that six neighbors wrote letters entered as evidence in the case thanking the girls for the cookies.

But Young said she was frightened because the two had knocked on her door at about 10:30 p.m. and run off after leaving the cookies.

She went to a hospital emergency room the next day, fearing that she had suffered a heart attack, court records said.

The judge awarded Young her medical costs, but did not award punitive damages. He said he did not think the girls had acted maliciously but that 10:30 was fairly late at night for them to be out.

And there you have it. Wonderful, kind acts of selflessness will get you fined $900. Dosn't that just put a wonderful, happy glow in your heart?

I took this from another board that I go.

USA sure is funny. It seems if you have a good lawyer you can do almost anything. Whee. :o

I read this on another board and just laughed at the stupidity of the american civil court system. I can't remember who said it but some comic once said

"Lawsuits are what we as a society have created to make sure our morons have money."

Thats pretty much it.

Well.......they might not have been very good cookies, so maybe not a totally selfless act

People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. What they don't understand is, I mean a jellyfish with long, blond hair.

There's no difference between USA and the rest of the world when it comes to stupid court rulings. In Sweden, there's an ongoing trial right now that's trying to decide if this one guy assaulted another guy. What did the accused guy do though? He installed a powerful car alarm inside his own driver's seat of his own car. Some thief tried to steal the car, set off the alarm while being inside the car and damaged his hearing! The guy called the police when he heard the alarm go off and went out to comfort the thief until the police arrived (it was a young thief). A few days later the thief accused the guy of assault.. We'll see what the verdict says in a few weeks.

I'm so glad that kind of thing isn't possible in Canada due to our property laws.

We have 3 levels.

Invitee: If you invite someone to your property, you are responsible for them

Business: While you may not necessarily invite people to your property, you're still responsible for them.

Tresspasser: If you didn't invite them, you aren't responsible. If something happens to them, its their fault.

We probably have other stupid lawsuits, but nothing like all the thief breaking into someone's property and being hurt so they sue crap you hear about.

I think one of the dumbest lawsuits I heard about was the guy who stuck an electic drill in his nose to get an itch and ended up ripping his nose off, so he sued the company for not telling him he can't put an electric drill up his nose.
