Phosphor Posted December 18, 2004 Posted December 18, 2004 Personally I don't see what the point is. Developers already have an indicator and that's all that's really needed.
Judge Hades Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 I think they should give lttle icons to those normal forum peeps who have been here and active for a very long time. Like once you reach 5000 post count or something. Nah, that would only lead to spamming. Nevermind.
ShadowPaladin V1.0 Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Definately a bad idea for posters in general. But for people who work for other companies they usually have something insightfiul to say. Being able to pick them out would be handy. I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. Deals like this kills development studios. 478327[/snapback]
EnderAndrew Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 I'm all for a karma mod to the board. Post count shouldn't be an indicator of how well a person is received in a community. Most people seem to really like Sawyer's posts, but his post count isn't that high. Karma mods are wonderful!

So most people like to read what JE posts, why is some marker required to show that? It just seems irrelevant to me.
EnderAndrew Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Karma mods allow the community to recognize certain posters, and it allows new users to spot recognized members of the community.
Shadowstrider Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Karma mods allow the community to recognize certain posters, and it allows new users to spot recognized members of the community. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> And turns the forums into a high-school-esque popularity contest.
Phosphor Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Karma mods allow the community to recognize certain posters, and it allows new users to spot recognized members of the community. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Shouldn't one's own ability to discern who is and who is not a poster "worthy" of reading stuff from be sufficient? I don't see how we need a forum code to mark someone as being better than anyone else. What one person sees as good material another may see as boring or pointless, or irritating. The message boards aren't a popularity contest nor a proving ground of any sort. If you know there are people you like to read posts from, you do it. That should be enough I'd think.
EnderAndrew Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Fair enough. I'm fond of them. And while Shadowstrider is concerned that it turns the board into a popularity contest, I see it as a way to downgrade post count and cheer up another's day. If nothing else, I find them interesting. Does anyone remember how the board blew up in size when KOTOR:2 was officially announced, and then again at NWN:2's announce, and then when KOTOR:2 went gold? This board is only going to grow and grow. I think that as the board gets huge, it will be quite difficult for devs to read the board and see suggestions. The Bethseda forums are a nightmare. Posts get buried in a few hours and disappear forever. With karma, the devs see how certain member's of the forum share the support of other members. People who make good suggestions will receive support. Polls are the bane of most forums, while karma provides another method to demonstrate solidarity and popularity in concepts while not auto-bumping themselves. From that aspect, the mod is not only a feature, but something that can be beneficial to new users, and developers alike when reviewing posts. I don't see a real downside.
Judge Hades Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Personally I can't believe I have over 5000 posts. My god, where does the time go?!?!?!
Judge Hades Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 Sorry, but I am wearing pink flame retardent leotards! BWAAHAAAHAAAAAAA!
EnderAndrew Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I can't even wash my eyeballs out because that's an internal vision.
Judge Hades Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 *In a japanese school girl voice* Tee hee!

Rhomal Posted December 21, 2004 Posted December 21, 2004 I use a forum that has a (basic, but being expanded) karma system but its interesting none the less. In general you can enable you post to only be read my someone with x amount of karma. How you gain karma points: - posting - getting replies to your initial post to start a thread - getting your post voted highly (only works if you have the ability for members to vote on posts. poor, fair, average, good, excellent kind of thing. Good and excellent posts gain you karma) - having your post stickied - total number of hits/reads your post gets How you loose karma - having your post deleted by mod/admin - having your post voted below average by members - having your thread locked - Mod or admin removing karma for poor behavior. Thats how the karma system is planned out for the forum I use. I think it adds a interesting element and makes it easy for those that want to filter out trolls and annoying posters. As they will get negative karma ratinging eventually and you have a way to avoid their posts.
