Anime: Emotions on a Rollercoaster

Episode 26 (153):

Spoiler

So the most childish is the craziest? Palla Palla attacked more people than any other villain in her first time so far in the entire series. And going to the dentist was already traumatic for Usagi and Chibiusa. Their caries were real, of course.🤣

Interesting how a psycho preteen that likes to torture looks nice after the three creeptooges.

Episode 27 (154):

Spoiler

Chibiusa intentionally avoids mentioning the guy was married, causing a war between Makoto and Minako. And when Minako causes a big mess, everyone turns on Makoto.confused.png.32c5d2a072ecd70d1035086796733a11.png

Spoiler

That episode bothered me a bit because it has a good episode hidden in there, but the resolution is too rushed. It shoud have had less Minako being Minako and more of Makoto and Minako making up after their fight (even our resident Minako fanboy @Bartimaeus might agree, I'm already curious what he's going to say).

Double spoilered just in case:

Spoiler

And while I thought it was nice that they tried to give Artemis something to do, it's not good that the other girls just ignore their fighting. I honestly don't think that Usagi would just stand by and watch them go at each other like that.

No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.

Yes, it was pretty serious and it shouldn't have been ignored.

You jest, but in a way they do. Pegasus is just a projection of Helios. The real Helios has a horn too, and Nehelenia rubs on it to make the Golden Crystal appear. ;)

I forgot to mention

Spoiler

She explicitly said she wanted the golden horn in her hands. Or something like this.:shrugz:

Episode 148 I think.

It's the one where Fish Eye goes after Mamo-chan.

Do the Amazon Trio ever change their drinks? Fish Eye drinks a cosmopolitan or some red martini with a cherry (because they're feminine?) while the other drink old fashioneds or on the rocks. Not a big deal but just something I noticed.

Usagi let's it slip that she has seen Mamo-chan's bedroom and Minako goes into her. Why they're all at a pet store makes as much sense as anything else. When Fish Eye shows up to seduce Mamoru, Usagi goes berserk. Because **** character development or trust. And Fish Eye is scared of cats.

Fish Eye tries to dream rape Tiger Eye, but I guess sexual predators don't have beautiful dreams.

We get teased with a new gang of henchmen and it's revealed that the mean circus lady is working for another energy being. @majesticwas right about being another Queen Beryl. Lmao.

Fish Eye dream rapes Mamoru then kisses him while he's unconscious. Double sexual assault, that's a new one.

And of course after the monster battle Usagi finds and comforts Fish Eye because this show is dumb.

Spoiler

They're at a pet store because this... I... hum... this is one of the reasons why I tried to find out if some of the re-tooling of the show happened after certain scenes or episodes were prepared in pre-production and then it was decided to do something else instead, with a mad scramble to make it work. The lack of proper stock footage in the first two episodes and the total lack of the girl's new transformation sequences until way into the season kinda speak for it.

The pet store is one of the earlier manga scenes, I think even the second act. Ami buys Fish-Eye there, in his little fish form before he is transformed and attacks her. In a normal Sailor Moon season that's what happens in like episode eight or some such.

And... Usagi in that episode is totally out of it. From flying off the handle because Fish-Eye talks to Mamoru to actively comforting him over not having a chance because her and Mamoru are destined lovers, how does that... why, what? How. Why. What? How is that in the same episode?

It's not beyond Usagi to try and comfort the lonely presumed girl sitting in the rain, but this episode and the entire season is just such a disjointed mess.

Oh, right, I forgot:

Spoiler

PallaPalla is easily the best villain in this season. She's batsh*t insane, always refers to herself in the third person and comes up with the best schemes.

Who wants to know why the second set of mooks are called like they are? Click here. Minor spoilers (only their names!)... and a major one for the manga (stuff not in the anime).

Spoiler

VesVes, PallaPalla, CereCere and JunJun are named after asteroids Vesta, Pallas, Ceres and Juno and are brainwashed Sailor Guardians, they're the four protectors of Chibi-Usa in the future, i.e. Chibi Moon's sailor gang.

Another Steven Universe episode.

Spoiler

So, yeah, gems can be damaged by damaging their... gems. Amethyst was unable to speak coherently for almost the entire episode, but it sure made no difference. I'm not sure that's a good sign, but it was funny. Steven indeed does have his mother's healing powers.

edit:

Spoiler

Well that was ominous. Lapis Lazuli was a bit cracked by the looks of it, but she was nowhere near out it like Amethyst. I mean... except for being weird and ominous.

Episode 28-29 (155-156):

Spoiler

The relationship between Zirconia and the girls is silly but funny. I wonder how much respect they have for Nehelenia.

Btw, when are we going to discuss the ending sequence? The song talks about love and adolescence, but basically only shows Chibiusa. And one of the last scenes is with Creepedosus:

Why wait 26 episodes for this? That was... interesting. Could have dropped the odd Lars episode or two and done this earlier. :)

It wasn't that the ball thing was forgettable per se (its design as a weird object as a ball specifically makes it a lot more memorable than most of the rest), it's that it was weird and a little uncomfortable, :p. Also, not gonna lie, probably gonna skip past the Makoto thing because I don't like my beloved characters being subjected to this, ;(.

As for that moment with Luna, no, that was funny. I said it some posts ago, but that's what's weird and unfortunate about this season - there are still lots of enjoyable little moments in most every episode, it's just that too many episodes as a whole have become net negatives instead of net positives, whereas in previous seasons, that was never really the case outside of literally like just a few very rare episodes that personally didn't work for me (usually because it was too heavy-handed and focused on the story).

@majestic RE: SU

Spoiler

Blame Cartoon Network - no, really. For the first season, Cartoon Network placed a hard limit on how many Serious Story episodes there could be, being that it's a kids show and all and they didn't want to confuse children with ongoing plots. So for they try to flesh out their universe and story with little details and fun character stuff, most of which is successful enough...but some of which, mostly the townie-related ones, can unfortunately fall a little flat. For subsequent seasons, it's more balanced...in theory. If you get to it, you'll see what I mean by it being "in theory".

What'd you think of Lapis? :shifty:

Small generalized season 1 and 2 spoilers (i.e. nothing to do with characters or the story itself):

Spoiler

In practice, this results in odd distributions of episodes where, for example, most of the first half of season 2 is more lower-key sillier stuff again...and then suddenly the show goes into Serious Story mode for the entire second half of the season. And it's not that the non-Serious Story mode episodes are bad or anything (...well, rarely there's like an Onion Trade-level episode that's not so good and feels like it was written by someone who completely misidentified the shows' strengths, but most of them are still pretty good episodes by most measures). It's just that...well, as I remember watching seasons past season 1, you tend to get into waiting for the next shoe to drop because the Serious Story episodes are so good - and they do indeed eventually drop. But try to enjoy the sillier episodes if you can - when I re-watched the show, I realized most of the sillier episodes were better than I initially gave them credit for.

Re-watching the show (this is my third time watching it), I also noticed that in season 1, you can tell from simply the animation quality how important the episode is. Episodes 25 and 26 both had high quality animation throughout both episodes - and then you watch episode 27 and the animation quality looks like it was made by an entirely different team of animators, like a B...or C or even D team. And then you watch episode 28 and it's another big jump up again, and then back down a bit again for the sillier next episode. It's weird.

Episode 149

Spoiler

This was a cluster****. Of all the villains the show has redeemed, the gang of sexual predators is the dumbest. The rape gang actually being animals, Pegasus using his horn to make them real boys, and Tiger Eye saving Sailor Moon from death a few minutes after ravaging her dream was some of the dumbest ideas in this show and that is saying something.

It's still interesting to see that you guys (really English, you can't come up with a different pronoun for second person plural?) deal with SuperS a lot better than I was. The reason why I mentioned that joke in particular is because it was like the first time an episode made me laugh out loud since the second one where Minako and Usagi try playing love godess and making everything worse for a bit. I hated every second spent on this season until the creeps were gone.

And I mean hated. So much that that Ami episode where she's playing mechanic fell squarely into "meh" territory for me because what the hell, a mechanic, and how does she jump to the conclusion that Mamoru's buying escort services? In reality it was probably a funny episode and cute that she wanted to defend her friend, and Hawk-Eye's scheme was hilariously dumb, still all I saw there was Ami not recognizing a car key. It wasn't even a net negative, was it?

The episodes following the creep's removal have less Pegasus in it, and inversely going by IC's comments I might have overrated them a bit (but how can you call an Ami focused episode forgettable? That should be a crime!) just because the creep factors were gone for a while. I don't know. In SuperS Sailor Moon reached the point where Star Trek Picard and Discovery were almost immediately, the point where even the good bits I make fun of or hate simply because everything else is so bad. Next part spoilered because it gives away some plot "points" KP and IC haven't seen yet.

Spoiler

This season was a lot better when I was younger and didn't see Pegasus as the pedophile creep he comes across. Even after watching the entire season again, writing my thoughts on it over and over, I'm still not sure if that was intentional or not. At the end, this is two perpetually young people (for whatever reason they're stuck at their age, but at least I know where to put the blame for that, right Madame Takeuchi?) having a romance of a sort, with all the problems that come with it.

So where I nowadays see Pegasus guilt-tripping Chibi-Usa, I used to see him simply being pushed a bit too far and moping. Where he's grooming Chibi-Usa by making her think it was love at first sight, it was him trying to explain why Makoto does the things she does. And really, him "refusing" Chibi-Usa as an adult was really just beause of her dreams coming true and them being diminished in return, maybe a commentary on the dreams of children shining brighter, being less jaded by the real world.

Instead... you have a grooming horse that guilt tripped his 9 year old girlfriend victim who berates her after she has her dreams come true and turn back into a little girl so he can go in to finally score without being afraid that she'll talk to her parents about it. One of which spends the entire season behaving worse than she ever did. Gah.

So, the question is now, did I like Sailor Stars so much because it wasn't SuperS? I don't know. I liked Stars better the first time than SuperS too, but what does say, except nothing at all? Might as well say you like having a nose bleed better than contracting ebola. You bleed profusely having either, but one's liable to kill you, and the other one's usually over quickly.

Spoiler

I liked Lapis Lazuli, by the way. Not that she was in the episodes much, but still, I might have mentioned once or twice how incredibly easy it is to get me interested in something. Her telling Steven to be suspicious of the other gems was enough, and Pearl wondering what will happen now that she managed to leave Earth? Count me in!

Was the distinction crystal gem meaningful? Because Lapis Lazuli isn't a crystal, I think, but quartzes, garnets and pearls are. Or was that just a happily little accident like Bob Ross used to say when a tree came out better on one of his paintings than he thought it would? I'm leaning towards this being intentional, given how carefully everything else about the setting seems to have been crafted by Rebecca Sugar.

Yes, screw that.

I wonder if that was meant to happen way earlier than it did. Because I have a hard time believing that they actually planned to drag out this sexual predator stuff for 22 <expletive removed> episodes only to have it end like that. Not even in Japan, and not even if Naoko Takeuchi was right in criticizing the "male" perspective Sailor Moon was made from (which I found easier to accept before Crystal and reading parts of the manga - she has no right to complain about the underwear :p).

I don't feel nearly that strongly negative - if I did, I would not be able to watch at all, because I can't watch something I hate that much, I just can't force myself to do it. The episodes as a whole have become more negative than positive for sure, but there are still usually some funny moments in each episode, including genuine laugh out loud moments here and there for me. Usually: there have been a few episodes that started, continued to be, and ended badly and couldn't land anything more than a chuckle-worthy moment. It should be noted that KP and I at least are watching the new English dub, which...may or may not help relative to the Japanese, difficult to say for sure (if nothing else, even the *creeps* have made me laugh out loud a number of times, even though I really shouldn't - that might be a sign of the English dub being stronger in of itself, IDK).

Not gonna lie, I completely missed the "subtext" there upon the initial watch until you mentioned it in your write-up, but re-watching that scene, it was totally there and I felt like a moron, :p. Just thought she made a dumb assumption a la Usagi about Mamoru having another girlfriend...until you mentioned it and then I realized all of the very particular word choice implied something quite entirely different!

@SU:

Spoiler

Yeah, a bit - mostly because the story episodes are just so good and so the smaller character stuff starts to feel like filler you just want to get through even though a lot of it's actually kind of important and sets up a number of stuff.

I figured you would like Lapis. When you get later into the show, remember this moment and why it was important, :).

"Crystal Gem" is indeed an important distinction, but obviously, I can't say why, and it might be a while before all of its meaning becomes clear. Once again, I implore you to never look anything up - you might think it's just for the smallest, itty-bittiest thing, but you could very easy accidentally stumble upon things not meant to be known for literal seasons.

It could be that the dub fixed a couple of things. The subtitles were rather blunt, I mean, that woman comes out of the garage and Mamoru thanks her for her service. If the English dub made it a bit more subtle than that's pretty good in and of itself.

I'm used to dubs being able to smooth over things, for instance, for the longest time I only knew the German dub of the first Dungeons & Dragons movie, and I kept hearing how terrible the dialogue is. The German dub's dialogue isn't bad. It's not great, at any rate, but it's not terrible - the film still sucks because it's bad, but the dialogue was all right. Then I watched the original and oh boy, they literally tell the girl she's just a low level mage. *facepalm*

Let me check what the German dub does in that scene. Heh. Mamuro says "thanks!" and she tells him "you're welcome, you can call (on) me any time", then Mamoru offers her to bring her home. Ami busts in and tells him that she's Bunny's (German dub ;)) friend and she's going to tell her about this. The subtext is definitely there too, just way less clear. It also makes Ami look less stupid for jumping to conclusions.

Oh, and going back to that scene from Sailor Stars that I linked earlier (minor spoiler):

Spoiler

When Seiya saves Usagi with the rose, and the scene ends with him holding her and saying:

English dub: "Can I replace him?"

German dub: "Maybe I can help. I'll try."

Japanese original: "Am I not good enough?"

The Japanese line is ambiguous, either he asks if he's not good enough for her to consider him as boyfriend, or not good enough for her as a friend to help her through the hard times she's going through (because prior she just has a major breakdown). The English dub goes with the first, and the German dub with the second interpretation.

edit:

Speaking of animation teams, yeah, there definitely is an A and a B team at work in Sailor Moon too. And a group of interns that get to do an episode every now and then. Like one of those you missed, with Naru and Umino. There's better fan art out there.

Watch the next episode: one of my favorites from S1! Although to be fair, I have a lot of favorites, but that's one of the more favoritiest favorites. And I'll...watch another episode of Sailor Moon SuperS. Hm.

No, the new English dub was pretty particular with the words it used and I should've caught on, I'm just the big dumb. Something else I sometimes have in common with Minako... :p And I'm really looking forward to that episode with Naru and Umino, especially given it's apparently their last appearance...

More hints at a space gem empire, or something. So why's everyone stuck on Earth? War? Calamity? Evil Space Sith Empire? Did Bowser steal Crystal Peach? Are we going to know? Hmm.... Pearl gets so excited MacGuyvering a space ship together that she totally forgets to be her usual cautious self.

So, I have a feeling you're not going to enjoy the SuperS episode nearly as much as I liked the Steven Universe one. ;)

edit: Well, I wrote it in my write up anyway, this episode is unique in that I hate it not because it's bad but because it's probably too effective in what it set out to do. Someone on the team REALLY hates Makoto.

I'm watching the sub. I'd have to watch both to reference, but what you said tracks for the sub as well.

He certainly doesn't look as bad as whatever the hell that is. But I think those aren't so bad. I mean in context the middle one is actually

SU UUU... Spaaaaaaaaace!

So, I have a feeling you're not going to enjoy the SuperS episode nearly as much as I liked the Steven Universe one. ;)

Yeah, but to be fair to myself, I decided to re-watch the SU episode too because I like it so much too. Whoops! SU:

Spoiler

Yes, Pearl was acting a little odd, wasn't she? :shifty:

Wouldn't you like to know - well, too bad, you'll have to wait and find out*! You have a few, uh, weird episodes coming your way, but things get more back on track after that, :p.

*This is the part where you learn it was actually all a ruse and the rest of the show devolves into endless nonsense saturday morning cartoons with no plot. Hope you like Crying Breakfast Friends on repeat, sucker!

Episode...what the hell episode am I on? Episode 147:

Spoiler

Oh gosh, one of them picked up Makoto...please be Bird Brain and not Fish Freak, please be Bird Brain and not Fish Freak...I shoulda watched the preview so I knew in advance! Fish Freak doesn't seem like someone Makoto would ever go for, but he is the one that picked up the picture...

Fun fact about the (new) Makoto English voice actress - she was actually a big Sailor Moon fan growing up, and Makoto was coincidentally her favorite character and the character she identified with most. I watched an interview with her (well, interviews with all of them, actually), and she very passionately spoke about the character and what she meant to her and specifically why she identified with Makoto most and how it was a dream come true to voice one of her heroes. Was very sweet. I believe Minako's and Rei's voice actresses were also fans of the shows growing up if I'm remembering correctly, while Usagi's had only like vaguely heard of it, which somehow seems fitting. Can't remember for Ami's - in fact, while I remember the other four very distinctly, I have no memory of Ami's voice actress or the interview I saw with her at all. That's weird.

Usagi, Chibi-Usa, and Mamoru dancing with each other was cute. Although a little less cute now with Makoto being so forlorn...Ami to the rescue! Oh no, Tiger Suit to the...uh, what's the opposite of rescue? Whatever that is. It's a good thing he's so tall, although I don't understand the heights in this show because everyone looks insanely tall to me, but I think I read a long time back on the Sailor Moon wiki that Usagi is supposed to only be like 5'4 which seems just ridiculous to me, and oh my gosh poor Makoto is completely smitten with this scumbag and it's wrong and terrible. And I...feel terrible that Tiger Eye isn't going to dance with her again. I FEEL TERRIBLE BECAUSE TIGER EYE ISN'T GOING TO DANCE WITH HER AGAIN. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE, TIGER'S EYE!? If you would just...dance and fall in love with her right here, right now, you would earn your redemption stripes and I'd be okay with that (well, assuming you also became a much better person too). This is going to be tough to finish. "(Hm, I don't have time to dance with girls not on my list of beautiful dreamers.) Maybe later." Pal, you're gonna get it, and you're gonna get it real good...and...and somehow you get redeemed, somehow you get redeemed instead of crucified or drawn and quartered or guillotined or OH MY GOSH SHUT THE **** UP PEGASUS YOU'RE RUINING MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT HERE

OH NO, IT'S FISH EYE, HE'S HERE! Oh wait, he's giving the picture to Tiger Hair. Phew. I mean...that's still bad, but it's better than Fish Eye, at least a little. Fish Eye should be ripped to shreds by a pack of wild dogs or something, that guy is beyond irredeemable. Hey, Tiger's Eye is actually having a crisis of conscience here. I remember when that happened with Nephrite...except he actually had a somewhat deserved redemption where he was also murdered as a result of actually doing things to help Naru, as opposed to whatever awfulness is going to happen here.

OH NO, FISH EYE IS DOING IT INSTEAD! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! SKIP SKIP SKIP! And now Makoto is convincing herself that that it was actually just dancing she liked...uh, hm, yes, sure, Makoto. Well, what a great ending to an episode...I'm sure.

Fair enough, it was an Ami episode and

Spoiler

she got a new power.

But not one of the best Ami episodes imo.

Fishcreep. Like I said before, after some point he simply starts appearing out of nowhere, sometimes even when he is not the main villain of the episode. He is there among the girls learning Ballet, or in the beauty contest, on the beach and so on. I don't wanna know what he is up to while he is not shown, but it is probably worse than what @majestic showed above. He should be punished by being forced to watch this season over and over again forever.

Tiger's Eye:

Spoiler

Yes, he had a crisis of conscience, but it didn't last long so screw him.

There were some funny moments with those guys, but only when their plans failed and they were ignored by Naru, the girl who was interested in Mamoru and so on.

Also:

Spoiler

Why did she kiss Usagi? Did Michiru find out? And if it happened in the episode Michiru fell on the waterfall, did Haruka forgot about her that fast?

Episode 148:

Spoiler

Great, another Fish's Eye episode - hopefully it's better than the disaster that was the last one. Gosh, this guy makes me mad and skeeves me out whenever it's one of his episodes - he's probably the funniest one when he's just chit-chatting with the other two, but then it's actually his turn and the episode can't end quickly enough.

I'm excited to meet these mid-level girl minions. I've seen some clips of them on the Sailor Moon Says channel and they seem like they could be more fun. They're probably going to do the same kind of crap, but at least...well, not to be sexist, but at least they're women and hopefully it'll be a little less predatory and distasteful.

Whoa, hold on, what is Fish Eye...oh. Hm. I actually...feel a little bad for these three. Then again, I felt bad for Donald Trump when I saw that video of him visibly struggling to breathe after getting coronavirus, and I want Donald Trump to die of a heart attack in the most hilarious and embarrassing fashion possible, like while sitting on the toilet or something, so let's just call it an overactive sense of empathy readily complicated by my equally overactive sense of hatred and contempt. What's weird is...they haven't really failed, like, even a single time? These targets are being assigned to them by Zirconia, and they're successfully searching their dreams - how's it their fault if Pegasus isn't in them? Kind of a dumb plot.

Episode 149:

Spoiler

...Hold on, wait a second. The person with Pegasus in their dreams will have a golden mirror? So...they never needed to check their dreams to start with? SO ALL OF THAT CRAP WAS FOR NOTHING?

No need to put this into spoilers.

Yes, it was. For nothing. And they all get to watch Pegasus groom Chibi-Usa by the dream lake.

Mako-chan suffered for that. What a way to make an episode worse in hindsight, huh?

No mind to think. No will to break. No voice to cry suffering.

It seems as though I accidentally skipped an episode - what I thought was episode 149 was actually 150, whoops! I was wondering what the hell happened to the three creeps, since they just completely disappeared. This season would be confused enough before you even add my out of order and missing episodes in, and that's certainly not helping.

But seriously, the hell?
