My poorly communicated point was, how would you even "keep harmful content off their platforms" sans literally banning live stream videos.

They can't. Their [the people complaining, to be specific] response with respect to most things including Twitter and Facebook is, basically, outrage or sadness porn with a dollop of authoritarianism for good measure, and I loathe Facebook and to a lesser extent Twitter. But, there are literally people here who are quite earnest in their belief that not only should Twitter/ Facebook/ Youtube be prosecuted- when we can't even get them to pay taxes but they seem to think we can throw Zuck in jail or something- but many of them also think anyone who got the guy's video autostreamed to them should be prosecuted for receiving it (!) and that isn't being helped by the police making pointless threats that judges and prosecutors will throw out of court/ never prosecute in the first place.

I'd have a decent amount of hope that cooler heads will prevail eventually. Some suggestions are plain impractical. Ban all semi autos and how do farmers control 50,000 rabbits a year? With a semi auto .22. OK, how about feral pigs or deer or goats or thar or moose that you cannot reliably take down with a bunny buster? Well OK, but we still want to ban ***weeoo weeoo trigger warning weeoo weeoo*** semi autos that look like an AK or AR-15.

Besides, aren't seni-autos like, 60% or 70% (or maybe 80%) of all guns in the world and 90%+ of every gun ever invented (due to full autos being a relatively recent development)? The earliest guns where you have to manually prime the powder and c0ck the gun would be closest to a completely manual gun since the firing would still be automatic because gunpowder. The thing is that the semi-auto category is so broad as to be useless for legislating.

may be a slight misunderstanding.

the following is not a semi-automatic.

54766269_1_x.jpg?version=1&width=512&for

is a bolt-action weapon and from personal experience is a viable vermin plinking weapon.  we single-handed erradicated a significant percentage o' the squirrel and rabbit population o' south dakota and north dakota with such a weapon.

video o' how the bolt-action works.

is not semi-auto as takes manual action to advance next round, yes?

gets complicated with revolvers, 'cause technical they ain't semi-automatic even though a double-action revolver advances next round with a single trigger pull.

m1911, on the other hand, is a semi-auto weapon, and is probable the most lethal personal weapon in US history. each pull o' trigger fires weapon one time, and the weapon self-loads each time weapon is fired.

fully automatic weapons, or weapons where you pull trigger and the weapon throws out a continuous stream o' bullets until you release trigger, is illegal, or to paraphrase so makes sense, Assault rifles have been banned here for ages, all you can buy is a semi auto that looks like an AK or M-16. the ar-15 is an example o' a weapon which is semi-auto, but looks like an m-16... is the most popular rifle in the US.

in terms o' performance, the following two weapons is virtual identical

ruger mini-14

ar-15

warning:

the following video is from the vegas shooting.  could be disturbing to many.

most folks on these boards, when we heard the footage from vegas, assumed the shooter were using an automatic weapon.  just listen to stuccato firing. the thing is, the vegas a-hole were using a simple device called a bump stock, which for all intents and purposes, made his semi-auto weapons perform as if they were full auto.

bump stocks will final be illegal on march 26 o' this year, and owners will need turn in or destroy bumpstocks by that day.  however, recent sales o' bump stocks has exploded, so...

HA! Good Fun!

ps in case it ain't obvious, we did not in fact decimate the vermin populations o' the dakotas.  however, the number o' dead squirrels and rabbits and even coyote attributable to Gromnir and his stinky winchester would be in the hundreds. plural.

I literally cannot contemplate a situation where you'd need a semi-auto rifle other than in contest with other human beings. You could make an argument for home defense, but the chance of you not only needing to reach for violence, but that you'll be in a miniature war zone is super slim.

Its even less of a problem is the availability of them is very low.

Although a semi-automatic pistol makes sense, cause you're likely not doing enough damage if you are even lucky to hit the assailant.

I don't know how much rents have increased compared to inflation, but what I do know is that effective wages have gone down. So maybe the problem with high rents is more a problem of purchasing power than anything else.

Average rent here in Texas is over 1k a month and minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Assuming you worked 40 hours a week and a roommate able to pay half, you'd be looking at half your before tax income going to rent. If you made twice minimum wage and pulled 40 hours a week, and many college students or young'uns do not, you're still looking at a quarter of your before tax income going to your rent.

So yeah, it's an issue with purchasing power and high rents. Rather than building new housing the focus should be on reducing the cost of existing housing and increasing wages if you want to help those struggling to afford shelter. That or landlords and employers are going to find a very angry crowd chasing them down the street.

shoot somebody with a smith and wesson 686 and they are going to feel it, even if you only hit once.  rifles ain't necessarily more powerful or more lethal than handguns, but rifles is far easier to fire accurately.

however, for home defense, we recommend the following:

g-42982-USA31L-21oz-297.jpg?medium

never jams. never suffers accidental discharge. chances o' your 5-year-old son accidental killing your wife or his sister with the louisville slugger is approaching nil. your accuracy is likely to be better with the slugger, particular in high stress situations.  have read police reports with trained cops firing at assailants multiple times from less than 15 yards and missing every shot.  swing at center mass with the baseball bat and you are gonna connect and do damage. a smallish woman swinging a baseball bat may generate a surprising amount o' force.  tiny (but not afraid) person with a baseball bat v. mike tyson and chances are mike ends up needing eat through a straw for the next year or so.

unless you is highly trained with firearms, your best home defense weapon, in our opinion, is the mighty louisville slugger.  am personal a traditionalist and prefer the heft o' a wood bat, but they can break.  metal bats is lighter, but they dent rather than splinter.

if you genuine know what you are doing with handguns, and are absolute certain you got cold steel nerves in a life and death situation, then a handgun is gonna be a highly effective self-defense weapon.  am suspecting that description applies to an exceeding small number o' handgun owners.

I know that, I was picturing a 9mm glock. Stopping power really falls off with range, and especially the accuracy.

Rifles still don't really need to be fully auto for any recreational use, and if it's being used against a human then either that is misuse or you are poorly equipped for the defensive scenario.

Hence, there isn't really a reason to have especially tactical mid-range firearms easily accessible. Granted illicit access of weapons really means nothing given how many firearms exist.

Posted

I'd see a recreational use case for s/a where there's potential personal danger. I doubt anyone would want to be working a bolt while an injured bear is charging them having muffed a first shot. That isn't really a concern here, except maybe for wild pigs. Culling of feral/ noxious animals is though, and recreational hunters shooting your feral goats or deer with a s/a is both highly effective and free, and without it they'd do a lot more damage than the amount they do already. Probably more humane overall than the only realistic alternative of fluoroacetate poisoning too; and 1080 ain't even practical in many cases.

Did you mean semi-auto? Though if you did mean full auto then I can't think of any civilian use other than pure recreation as it's not good for much other than just having fun.

PS alternate action (pump, revolver, and bolt at least because I haven't seen lever) versions of AR10/15s along with other configuration changes like the removal of the pistol grip are becoming more common

AR 10/15 = the ultimate modular firearm? heh. I'm sure firearms would be even more modular or someone would invent a truly modular firearm (probably when 3D printing becomes more ubiquitious) without all the regulations. At the core, all you really need to make a gun is a tube, propellant+projectile, and a trigger, everything else is fancy dressing.

Indeed and it's one of the major reasons why the AR platform is so popular. Some of it just hobbyists hobbying and the other bit is people getting around restrictions like the aforementioned removal of the pistol grip.

I love how gun grabbing politicians can just LOOK at guns and somehow just KNOW how deadly they are. Dianne Feinstein once said that she became an expert on firearms because she looked at thousands of pictures of them on the Internet. By that logic that makes me the world's foremost gynecologist.

no doubt many folks have gotten sick o' seeing us post comparisons o' the ruger mini-14 and the ar-15.  am knowing the sinister black ar-15 looks scary, and 'course ar means assault rifle *snort* but am never seeming to make headway when we explain both is semi-auto and have similar performance profiles.

'course getting folks to understand what is a semi-auto is also implausibly difficult, and such is a foundational issue, no?

at same time, am a bit baffled by how tenacious some folks is in defending bump stocks.

https://www.rwarms.com/

they is out of stock by the way.  has been a massive last minute run on a modification which will need be returned or destroyed within a week?

no shortage o' obtuse folks on both ends o' the spectrum.

the thing is, you know the washington post is loving the chance to quote the Congressman's complaint.

"According to the complaint, Devin Nunes’ Mom called Nunes a “presidential fluffer and swamp rat,” a statement that is an opinion and, perhaps, and insult, but it’s not factual.

"The cow’s account allegedly said that “Devin’s boots are full of manure. He’s udder-ly worthless and its pasture time to move him to prison,'” who would be construed as an insult, too. "

Me? Yeah, s/a == semi auto since I can't be bothered typing it half a dozen times per post. I would have thought from context it would be pretty obvious since I've said multiple times that full autos are illegal here so they can't be used by either hunters or pros (armed forces and one police unit only, to be specific). Even the ones owned by collectors have to be mechanically gutted, as I also mentioned.

perhaps you wanna explain differences 'tween auto, semi-auto, manual?  we gave it the old college try, but seeming am missing the target, so-to-speak.

You never hit the target. It's the one thing you're 100% consistent about.

Please Grom, your shtick is clearly more important to you than being clear in explanations, you don't really have a leg to stand on in the narcissism front. It's not particularly difficult to do a simple explanation of the differences if you concentrate on doing that instead of maintaining a character.

Manual action guns: requires a user performed action between each trigger depression/ firing. In modern weapons this would typically involve ejecting a spent casing from the breech, and cycling a new round into it via a simple mechanism like working a bolt, pump or lever. Rate of fire is typically slow, but it's reliable and accurate.

Semi automatic: similar to a manual action in that you get one firing per trigger depression, but there is no additional user performed step required between each trigger pull so long as there is ammunition in the magazine. The case ejection and loading of a new cartridge is performed automatically, typically using the recoil or gas ejection of the fired round to drive its reload/ ejection mechanism. Rate of fire is considerably quicker than manual.

Automatic: similar to semi auto in that the gun's cycling is performed automatically, but it will continue firing so long as the trigger is depressed and there is ammunition available. Rate of fire is quickest by far, but it tends to be more less accurate per shot and more prone to failure and jams. Most personal automatic weapons can be set to a single shot semi automatic mode in addition to full auto.

regardless o' the explanations, people still become confused. in any event, thinking we were speaking to or 'bout you when we has now mentioned at least four times recent in this thread alone how folks in general improbable miscomprehend the distinctions is a kinda narcissism.

even so, in spite our your tim apple defense, you did learn the ar-15 is a semi-automatic weapon, so our explanations helped at least one person clear up their clear misapprehension.  thank goodness for basic reading comprehension skills.

Eh, the only person with a clear misapprehension was you because you let your desire for a zinger overcome the requirement for comprehending what you read- and that unfortunately hasn't been cleared up at all. You had an explanation of why you were wrong, I lack the, hmm, narcissism to try and explain again because you're either incapable of or unwilling to understand why you're wrong. Which is a repeating pattern in pretty much every argument you have with anyone.

The Democrats used to say "character doesn't matter". They were, as usual, wrong. Of course in 2016 unless you voted 3rd Party (there WERE other and better names on your ballot!) you were voting for someone who had no business being in a position of power.
