Why are Aloth, Eder, and Pallegina all low levels?

Recommended Posts

I think the level 1 thing was obviously for budget reasons. We got multi and subclasses though at least.

Which have created a ridiculous number of problems because they seemingly didn't think there would be anything wrong with giving players full access to two classes simultaneously.  Wizard, Priest, and maybe Druid are the only classes that genuinely seem better pure classed, everything else gains too much from going multi to warrant sticking for the 8th and 9th level powers.  Even then, once they fix Wizards and Priests having redundant spells or incredibly underpowered spells, it might be those two also gain more from going multi than staying pure.

Subclasses also don't really strike me as being that interesting.  Some, like Devoted, are brainless "of course I'll take it" choices once you understand certain gameplay mechanics (such as being able to retrain that one proficiency you get, so you never have to use a non-proficient weapon and therefore never suffer the subclass' drawbacks.)  Others seem difficult to justify under almost any circumstance (Form of the Fearsome Brute is utter garbage so there's no reason to ever make a Transmuter, etc.)

This is to be expected from such dramatic changes, but I wonder if they were even necessary.  Character creation and progression was horribly boring and static in Pillars, but was creating a multiclass system really the best way to fix that?

Personally doesn't matter to me POE 2 is what it is, we start from 0.

That been said I would like POE 3 to simply not built to start at level 0 again, I like see POE 3 add high level content follow on from POE 2 with level progression.

As for DLC's for POE 2 I hope they progress well from POE 2 level characters and add in some interest and variety.

How we follow on from POE 2 is interesting question. Just adding in more levels not going be much fun.

I would prefer specialisation levels.

so as examples weapons specialist, black guard and necro for wizard etc. It would be interesting see what specialisations obsidian come up with after POE 2 multiclass.

Might also be interesting see communities ideas to.

It's been explained that the reason the Watcher reverts to level 1 is that Eothas drained his/her soul.

But Eothas didn't drain the souls of the 3 companions that return in Deadfire. They weren't even in or near Caed Nua when Eothas emerged!

So why don't our old buddies Aloth, Eder, and Pallegina get to stay at max level? Is there any logical lore-friendly explanation for why they have to start over at level ~1?

Or did the developers simply assume that nobody would notice or care?

to be honest they don't have a good reason at all and i think it doesn't need one. why? it's fantasy and it's just a game. do you really think a few humans (except the watcher with supernatural abilities) can beat dragons, ogres let alone big cats? go throw a few humans in a cage with a lion and see how it turn out :)

Well if I could use my soul-power to send an ogre flying and speed-dash 25m in half a second then yeah, sure. I'll take that bet. :fdevil:

I'd assume dragons would effectively be physical gods, unless they have a really tough time channeling soul energy for some reason.  Dragons are already physically imposing, but then add sapience and longevity to the mix... you'd figure they'd basically be running things unless the "real" gods directly intervened in some way.

Well you can get a lv 20 Pallegina if you recruit her at level 20.

It's just a gameplay mechanics, don't think too hard about it.

I wouldn't call it game play mechanics so much as game balance.  The game wouldn't seem very balanced if your starting character had a level 15 (or whatever it "should" be at the end of PoE1) Eder at your side.

Pretty much this.

Any other game company would do this. They should do this. It only makes sense to make sure that you don't have an over-powered character from the start.
