Now now, let's not go about assigning blame. Good times, remember? Incidentally, the threads are still viewable if you have them in your history file. Closed now, of course, but anyone with a long history file who viewed all the threads could make a list of the threads that existed with the URLs. For posterity's sake, y'know.

Today we commemorate the passing of a forum close to some of our hearts, and lament the deletion of the Other Games forum. It is with a heavy heart that I remember the life of our beloved forum, ignored for so much of it's time on this board, and laid to rest so soon after. Though I knew Other Games for but a short week, the forum held a place in my heart. I've known many forums in my time, but all of us gathered here to remember it surely agree that Other Games was special. From its first thread to its last, it brought joy to our lives. It also brought us a cherished sense of danger, as we hid in it from the powers that be, breaking the rules and praying we would not be discovered. But all things must come to an end, my friends, and as we lament its discovery and its passing into the great forum of the sky, I'd like us all to remember the good times. The Other Games forum Born: February 14th, 2004 Discovered: September 23rd, 2005 Died: September 30th, 2005 R.I.P.

The decline of isometric perspective.....
Reveilled replied to roshan's topic in Computer and Console
To be honest, I like the 3rd person perspective in RPGs. I find it helps me suspend disbelief and find roleplay easier. I think the three camera options of NWN is a good way of doing things. That way, everyone gets what they want, right? On the other hand, when it's a Strategy Game, it's not worth playing in my opinion unless it's isometric or top-down. Which is why C&C after Red Alert 2 sucked so much. I assume that the desire to play combats in a strategic manner is why many like the isometric view in RPGs? Personally, I generally tend to see combats (except for major Boss battles and such, when in NWN I do set it to an isometric perspective) as the tedious thing I have to do to get to the next bit of the story, so if I can just hack my way to the quest item or the next town in a 3rd person view without (too much) strategy, so much the better. -

Oh, uh, Kaftan, just in case you don't already know, you don't need a build order from me. I know it lists that I have a build in the first post, but that's been resolved. -
What about the background radiation Penzias and Wilson found? Wasn't that one of the indicators that the people who originally advanced the big bang theory predicted, which turned out to exist? For that matter, isn't that the prime evidence cosmologists use? Also, what about the entire discipline of Cosmology? Scientists seem pretty confident about what happened in the first fractions of a second after the Big Bang. What, exactly, is your source on this? This "breathing theory" is entirely new to me.

this does not surprise me. rather, the role of environment is apparent in a lot of things. of course, it's chicken and egg, IMO. for example, things that grow fins for transportation aren't likely to evolve on land. but, the question becomes, is environment the cause of the evolution, or a result of what got selected? taks <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I would suggest somewhere in between. It does not seem implausible to me that the environment would have a sufficiently significant effect on physiology such that mutations are geared in a certain way. Of course, they are still random to a degree, but I think it highly possible that mutations that increase resistance to heat would be more common in warm areas. I say this, of course, having not so much as a day of even High School Biology, so I am speculating at best and talking out of my arse at worst.

*scratches head* Well, Having looked at the moves from the last turn (the moves currently posted at the start of the thread), it seems to me that Austria has five centres and four units. Is there something I'm missing? From what I can tell, Archie's map of down south is identical to my own, at least in regard to Austrian units. -

Well...technically, yes, I am confident of that now, but right now it's 1 AM in Reveilledland, So the end of my day is in 23 hours. I'll have to go to bed soon to be able to get up for my 9 o'clock lecture, but I will do my best to get an adjudication of Winter by Wednesday 12:00UTC (in twelve hours time). I can't guarantee a map by then (as I might not be doing it from my own computer), but if I don't have one then, I will have the map by 19:00UTC. I'm much less busy on Thursdays, so the adjudication after that should be done much more speedily. -
I play mostly Connect 4 and Cluedo Extreme. But also an old Sherlock Holmes board game called 221B Baker Street: The Master Detective Game. 'Tis a truly enjoyable game, my dear Watson.

What's worse is that they stole the name of a perfectly reasonable modern theological idea and used it to cover a backward and reactionary one. Not so very long ago, Intelligent Design used to be about the evolutionary process being guided by a creator force rather than pure chance (or rather, that the creator force utilises or manipulates chance to get where it wants to go). A view that might not be scientific, but is certainly compatible with the science itself. But once Creationism got a bad name, Intelligent Design was stolen and chosen as the new name. Ah, but such is the lot of the reasonable person. Doomed forever to be drowned out and pushed down by the fanatics behind him.

Vote of No Confidence in GM Archie!
Reveilled replied to jaguars4ever's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
While I find this all very amusing (though I'm not so sure about the liberties hollywood seems to have taken with my gender in the dramatised version of events "), I would in all honesty prefer that Archie stay on as GM. I'm just a little uncomfortable with the idea of kicking him out of his game. If Arch has other matters in his life that take more importance than the game, we ought to respect that. On the other hand, we would like to keep the game moving, Arch. Perhaps if you are busy with other issues, we could make a temporary arrangement for your absence? We can implement the recipient/adjudicator proposal at least until you have resolved whatever is keeping you in the real world. If, of course, such things have already been resolved, then there's no problem. -

Rev can do it if you like Archie - he seems to understand the rules. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The problem, of course, with me adjudicating turns is that I am playing in said turns and it would be perfectly possible for me to cheat, as such. Not that I would, but the possibility of it happening is still present. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Whilst theoretically true - it is highly unlikely you would be able to get away with it given that other experienced players (albeit with lesser prowess than yourself), would catch you out or at least dispute the ajudication: e.g. Ender, Meta, The Don etc. No disrespect to Archie, but while he's been a most courteous and decent GM, he has made technical errors in conflict resolution almost every turn. With Mets this applies to a lesser extent. As for Ender, well there haven't been enough turns to judge. I know we're all learning together, but when all's said and done, you've been by far the cr -
China renews their crackdown on the internet
Reveilled replied to kumquatq3's topic in Way Off-Topic
On the other hand, they could...oh, I dunno, read a book about Chernobyl, and have all they need to know. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Both are easily accessed. The internet, nowadays, is more readily available to terrorists. They even have their own damn sites. And not all small islamic countries have libraries around the block. (Though the same could be argued against the internet...still, Al Jazeera has a site...so, access) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I wasn't aware one could carry out a nuclear attack on a city in the United States without ever leaving one's small islamic country. I would have thought that a terrorist cell planning on carrying out an attack would spend time living in the country they attacked. A bit like just about every other cell that carried out a major attack did. -

BTW, I hope the fact that this story was post on YAHOO NEWS wasn't lost on you guys <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Obviously, they're looking to topple Microsoft from their stranglehold on the position of Most Evil Corporation. Late in his life, Charles the VI of France periodically suffered from a delusion that he was made of glass and that if anyone touched him he would shatter. He most likely suffered from Bipolar Disorder.

Wakko's America - from Animaniacs It's on repeat 1 so I can learn the song, which is essentially a list of all the states and their capitals. I have made it my personal mission in life to learn every song which is simply a list of related entities, such as the Elements song or We Didn't start the fire.

Couldn't you incorporate skills and saves in your combat system? So if, say, the character the gamer was playing had a chair thrown at him, you might have different options based on the characters abilities, saves, and skills. So, when roleplaying the result of having the chair thrown at him, a character with a high reflex save might be able to dodge it, while one with a high strength and dexterity might even catch it. I don't think you need to ditch it all to make an interactive combat system based on roleplay.

That just makes it sound even cooler. Now it sounds like the AIDS has led to a fascist high-level dictatorship taking over the world and using disease and threats of them to keep the oppressed population in line. Brave New World of Warcraft! :D
-
My friend who plays it hasn't even heard of the AIDS. Perhaps it is currently localised in one area of the world?

Ooooo. This is quite good fun. :D
