Is that really your desk, Llyranor? Seems a bit... crowded.

Time to start planning my new computer
Cantousent replied to Cantousent's topic in Skeeter's Junkyard
Oh, I don't need to get it before the end of the year. I just need to have an end game in mind. I think your advice is quite reasonable, Don Jags. Hell, Angs made pretty much the same point up above. Apparently, it's all hinging on new hardware coming up within the next few months and the operating system which should hopefully be here before the new year. EDIT: Also, I'm pretty much determined to get all the parts new for this one. I've used my old parts to build my mom's computer. It's not awesome, but it's a p4 2.8ghz with 1 gig of pc3200 ram and a Radeon 9600. She wants me to keep it for her, but I've been reluctant to put any of my own software on it. It is, after all, her computer. -
Time to start planning my new computer
Cantousent replied to Cantousent's topic in Skeeter's Junkyard
Well, I'm not normally willing to wait for computer purchases just becuase there's "something better" on the horizon. If you play that game, you end up in a waiting cycle forever. However, if we a significant number of releases slotted by the end of the year, then I agree that I should hold tight. Probably the biggest factor right now is the operating system. I should probably wait for Vista. Let's face it, I'm going to upgrade to vista when it's finally available. I don't want to buy something now and then have to buy an upgrade again. On the other hand, Windows XP home edition is only something like $90. I could get that and then upgrade. This is especially true since you can never tell when Microsoft ship an operating system. So, if it ends up being the middle of next year, I'll be stuck without a gaming rig the whole time. Don't get me wrong, I use my wife's right now, but going from three to two computers just doesn't work. Even if I used my laptop for computer gaming, it's only got an ATI mobility x300. Inferior graphics, a slower processor, and hotter than hell. I could warn my hands in the wintertime with the damned machine. Anyhow, please keep the advice coming. I especially appreciate the links to articles. EDIT: Oh, and I'm hoping to keep this expenditure down to 2k or less. -
Nick, your log is all messed up. But that's okay. I'll recap the little bit that went past Llyranor's log. I'll do that before the next session. Also, remember that I told you this was temporary. We've got to find a permanent DM, you motley bunch. Let's start leaning on folks to get the ball rolling.

Just make sure you do well on your exams, kid. You didn't really miss much. The sacred band was trying to ensure they forced their way across the river. They were bound and determined to do so. Hahahah. Well, they managed it. One of the horses died, but they killed all three vines. It was an experience, alright. hahaha

Time to start planning my new computer

No. It's not imperative that I build it right now. I might wait until the newest vidio hits the market and buy the current models a little cheaper. How long are we talking? -

For the video, I plan on get something in the mid range. I don't want to go over $300. ...But I haven't used nvidia for years. -

Okay, my brainy friends, give me a hand. I was thinking of an asus motherboard supporting a dual core AMD chip. Yes, I'm going to take my chance with AMD. So, what do you suggest? I figure that I'll decide on the motherboard, upgradeable to 6 gigs of memory, set with 2 gigs when I build the system, the processor, and then I'll decide on the video card. I've enjoyed and had good luck with ATI, but I'm willing to listen to advice concerning nvidia.

I'm not a big fan of RTS games. Even though I'd love to have a good fantasy battle game, I'm going to pass on this one. Let's hope we get an RPG eventually.
-
Finished Metal of Honor. Great game, although getting out of the fortress on hard was irritating. It took me something like ten tries before I figured out the trick. Still, I enjoyed the game a lot. Do any of you know how Call of Duty stacks agains it? I'm talking the first one, not CoD2.

Okay, we have a room at 2thextreme. The room is ObsidzRPG and the password is Baley.

BTW: Blank and Baley have yet to send me their new character level information. Please get me this sort of information before the game day so I can prepare your character sheets by the time we play. :Eldar's friendly smile icon:

NWN 2 DM Client will not ship with the game
Cantousent replied to Lare Kikkeli's topic in Computer and Console
Here's where I disagree, Llyr. It's the threat of reduced sales that has an effect on current development or even responses from the developer. If a sufficient number of folks start to voice concern on an issue, there will be an answer. I don't advocate making a huge fuss. What this issue has made clear to me is that Feargus doesn't want to answer the comment. He probably believes that any answer he gives will only make things worse. He's probably right. I'm willing to give Feargus a break. I'm not willing to attack Gromnir because he disagrees. -

Cantousent replied to Lare Kikkeli's topic in Computer and Console
I'm not railing about game length. I'm not picking a fight over anything. If I were, it would be apparent to one and all. What I'm saying is that the mystery regarding this alleged comment is easy enough to dispel. Have Feargus come right out and say either "Yes, I made the comment" or "No, I didn't." I'm not making waves because the campaign might be short. Actually, I'm not making waves at all at this point simply because I think we will have more clarity. However, Feargus making a heartfelt apology to the strident voices of the DM client while giving us the bums rush simply highlights the fact that Obsidian clearly takes us single player folks for granted. Even worse, folks here complain at Gromnir for doing something that makes perfect sense to me. He's agitating for more information. How the hell can that be bad? Sure, he's got a confrontational style, but he's trying to find out more before he buys the game. If he succeeds, even in some small degree, then the people who pillory him now will benefit from his efforts later. As for the threads dying? Give me a break. It's hard for a thread to live past closing, which is what both threads here suffered. If we started a new thread and agitated, it would go for another 20+ pages. I know how to generate heat. You, Vol, would help me do so. Look, I'm not saying that we should storm the citadel. I'm saying we shouldn't just write off Gromnir's position. If you boil it down to the essentials, it's not about the length of the game or the DMC. It's about the fact that we can't get a straight answer on some of these issues. We can't even get Feargus, or some employee, to confirm or deny comments attributed to the CEO. While It's no longer the hot button issue for me that it once was, the whole debacle surrounding the alleged comment only serves to highlight the way things are going down for this title. Four months out and they're pulling the DMC? It's not my make or break issue, but what happens when they say they're cutting down on the side quests? We should demand, and receive, answers for a product we intend to buy. It's that simple. -

Lucky for us the "how is the family" question made it into the top ten, though. hahaha -
NWN 2 DM Client will not ship with the game
Cantousent replied to Lare Kikkeli's topic in Computer and Console
Probably not. It's a funny thing. The multiplayer crowd has a huge impact on creating excitement for a game. ...But a short campaign, if anything less than stellar, will undoubtedly be a sore spot for more players. Feargus can afford to avoid the issue because the Bioware boards have been less than welcoming to non-multiplayer members. It's not going to cause as much of a stir. I think it'll cause one after the fact, however. ...And I'm not spoiling for a fight over the campaign length. However, I do think that the CEO of a company should be willing to confirm that he did or did not make a comment in regards to his only confirmed project. -
NWN 2 DM Client will not ship with the game
Cantousent replied to Lare Kikkeli's topic in Computer and Console
hahahaha It's always good to see exactly where we rate, doesn't it. The DMC might not ship? Feargus is quick to answer and apologizes for the way the information reached us. Folks say Feargus claimed the packaged campaign would only last 20 hours? Stony silence. No, no. I'm not really griping. I think it's kind of funny. -
NWN 2 DM Client will not ship with the game
Cantousent replied to Lare Kikkeli's topic in Computer and Console
You know, the most vocal voice concerns the DMC but more people will probably be affected and upset about a short campaign. Personally, I never planned on using the DMC. Hell, I might not use multiplayer. ...But folks who basically gave us a cold shoulder in regards to getting an answer from Feargus concerning an alleged comment should be happy that at least the development team is shelling out the answers. As far as this goes, I do think it's a bad sign. It's a bad sign because it demonstrates a major, and I do mean major, change in the project at the last minute. Horses dropped? That's really actually very minor. Sure, it's a make or break issue for some folks, but nothing like the DMC. A short campaign and no DMC? That's a big issue. However, before everyone goes hog wild, remember how well Civilization 3 did? They touted that game, almost to the bitter end, as a multiplayer game. When it finally shipped, it lacked multiplayer. Then, the publisher decided to put multiplayer in the expansion pack and sell rather than make it free. This move on the part of Obsidian is not unprecedented. It need not be a sign that the game is bad. I see a lot of good qualities to the game. However, I have to agree with Volourn that it look like Obsidian didn't manage their project very well. Since they're in the business of developing computer games, I would have expected them to figure out something like this a bit farther out than four months. NWN2 has the trappings of a great game. We have yet to see. ...But we lack clarity, and that's something as a consumer we should expect to receive for any game we buy. I'm not interested in the DMC, but I am interested in knowing exactly what will or will not be included in the finished product. -
Well, I guess tarna's is worse than my wife's. I'm strictly a build and forget it kind of guy. As long as the programs I need to run work properly, I don't ever tinker with my computer.

Okay, that's four of you. Enough to play. I'd like to start at 12pm. Please let me know if that will be a good time.

Originality and Motivation in PnP games
Cantousent replied to Zachech's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
Just think of it as a collaborative effort. See how it works. Normally I don't have them get in on the ground floor, but I'm always willing to talk with them. In fact, you could create a backstory and then just collaborate on their more personal story. Let us know how all this pans out. -
No-one's desktop compares to my wife's so far.
