  1. It's always different you do it, Vol. That's only your reasonable nature. When others do the same thing, it's obviously on account of their unreasonable nature.
  2. Well, maybe I should just get the current card I've chosen, bypass the 7950, and then get the DX10 card after it's been out for a while. The next generation should still work in my PCI-X 16, right?
  3. Good Lord, Bok, what the hell are you on about? No, I didn't do all the side quests. It was a pretty damned long game just doing the quests I did. The game is huge. HUGE, I tell you!
  4. I've completed this game. It was great. However, I'll lend my voice to the anti-scaling crowd. Just nuts. I plan on playing it again, but only after I have my new system.
  5. You misunderstand, I'm quite happy that you get your DMC. I'm not, however, much interested in it. I think it's kind of funny that I'm suddenly an Obsidian fanboy. ...Or was I misreading you, Vol. :Eldar's slapping Vol on the back with a cat who ate the canary grin icon: I reserve the right to voice my opinion. This seems like a reasonable compromise between the folks who want the game and don't care about the DMC and the folks who want the DMC right away. The DMC crowd made enough noise that Obsidian responded. Hell, we've seen companies that have said, "thanks for the interest, but we're making the game our way." Hell, you've seen those arguments here. "If you want the DMC right away, don't buy the game."
  6. Oh, if I'm going to buy something, I'm asking around beforehand. I don't go out and buy any big items spur of the moment. However, I usually act on a decision very quickly. Unfortunately, that decision, at this point, means waiting until the new video cards hit the shelves so I can compare them to the old ones. Also, I usually take the money to buy a decent PSU. I'm going to go crazy about it, but I will drop the cash for a good one.
  7. Oh, be glad that Obsidian is clearly trying to satisfy everyone. First it was "will the single player campaign be better?!?!?!?!" Then it was "will you support PWs??!??!?!!!?!" Then it was "OMG, 20 hours?!??!!" Then it was "No DMZ?!?!?!?" (Oops, that was in Korea) Anyhow, as much as it appears that Obsidian really had poor planning at the outset, they've really tried their best to get on the ball about such things. Now, if they don't have the DMC ready, fire away. However, if they do, then be happy. Everything I've seen of late has made me happy about the decision to pre-order. The fact is, they're responding to our desires. They're undertaking the monumental task of trying to accomodate a disparate and demanding consumer base. We should give them a break.
  8. You are truly a doofus. However, I will say that the alignment system sucks. I hate it. In DnD, it's a major part of the rule-set. However, in games where you make or break your own code of ethics and morals there is a much wider variety of possibilities. Decisions are harder in such systems because there is no over-arching guideline upon which to base your decisions other than what you take into your own internal code.
  9. The people are always free to voice their opinions. In cases where there is no clear majority, then the various minority blocks will be forced to compromise. However, those compromises still reflect the desires of the majority. In other words, the various parties that comprise the majority block each represent their own slice of the majority. When they make a compromise, it is as a representative of their constituents. It's not perfect, but it does reflect the will of the people, no matter how tortuous it might be. Moreover, the will of the people is paramount. Measures that are hateful to the majority, in other words a true majority find them unequivocally despicable, are destined for defeat. For example, can you see a measure passing through your legislative body that allows for summary executions of non-Christians? The status quo is the biggest stumbling block to voter turn-out. As long as the situation is not dire, voters are likely to remain apathetic. In our western democracies, the voters generally feel well served by the government. Sure, one politician or another will rise to or fall out of favor, but the fact is that the issues are rarely sufficiently dire to demand real change. That's the first argument. My real feelings are this: If folks can't be bothered to vote, then they are at the mercy of better men who exercise the right and responsibility of voting. That doesn't mean I hate folks who don't vote. I rather like some folks who refuse to vote, but I'd rather have people like Hades who, no matter how much I deride their opinions, at least carry out their most basic obligations as citizens. There are too many parties? Combine forces. Compromise has turned into a dirty word, I suppose, but all democracy is built upon it. Without compromise, there can be no western democracy. You must understand, however, that democracy is the heart of our culture. As ridiculous, dangerous, or even downright hateful as some of the proposals are in this thread, I'd stand by the decision to implement them if we reached that decision through our current democratic process. I might think some measures are hateful, but I'll abide by them for the sake of our democracy. The sole exception are measures that are intrinsically hateful to the very nature of democracy itself. For example, I will never support a measure in favor of slavery. If the majority ever passed such a measure, I would rebel against it. I will never support a measure in favor of the establishment of the state religion. If such a measure were passed, I would agitate against it. I will never support a measure in favor of racial genocide. If such a measure were passed, I would actively fight it. I trust our democracy, however. It loses its way from time to time, but it is better than all other choices. I would rather risk my life because of some of Hades ill-conceived proposals democratically passed than live safely under the heel of a dictator.
  10. HoMM was turn-based. I'm glad they didn't go the RT route.
  11. Did you make sure you plugged in the power supply? What standard is your AGP? It would really suck if your motherboard didn't support the new card! Keep us posted.
  12. Oh, there's an equal possibility that he just wanted to make the sale and knew the details.
  13. That, my friend, is a shame. Sign up and vote. It is the most basic of both your civil rights and also your civic obligations.
  14. Yes, I'm still there. I haven't had as much of a chance to play lately, but I'm still plugging away. I spent several hours playing in exemplar mode to help a friend level his character. Maybe we can hook up again and smite more baddies.
  15. Maybe they can hire someone who could raise the horsie for them ... maybe they might walk past a CN-with-evil-flirtations Cleric who whimsically decides to raise the horsie for practice, and for free ... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This is a perfect solution! I think you should do this now that you're taking over as DM! hehehe
  16. Actually, I think I'm ready to buy. Everything, all tolled, comes to $2,174.19 after taxes. That's good enough for me. The real question is, wait for the 7950s or not. Some of you suggest waiting and others suggest finding what I like and buying. That's the real question now. I don't trust Vista to ship before the end of this year. In fact, I don't trust it to ship before the middle of next year and then I expect that the worst bugs and security issues won't be fixed before the end of next year. So, will getting this card: ASUS EN7900GTX/2DHTV/512M Geforce 7900GTX 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card mean I'm crying because I didn't wait for something. Will this card be able to use DirectX 10? What's the deal, you computer brainiacs?
  17. See, we should argue about ancient politics. That's more fun and actually causes just as much mayhem if you move in the right circles.
  18. You had it right, Pixies, but that story is part of the Trojan War mythos. There are myths that predate Homer's [Homers'?] works that didn't make the cut.
  19. Okay, here's one of my favorite passages. I'll give you a hint: Socrates is the speaker.
  20. Ah, I have history and Classical Studies degrees. They're really only useful for rhetoric.
  21. Well, the raptor was much harder on the overall budget. I might slip in one of the 7950s and go for a more modest HD. Frankly, I've never used more than 50 gigs on a harddrive. I could probably get by with an 80gig drive.
  22. which is better? that or what we have now (tyrrany of the minority)? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The tyranny of the minority occurs when the majority votes for one thing but the minority defies their will. We have a rule reprsentative of the vote in this country, which means that the majority of voters will get their way. I think it is admirable to encourage folks to vote, but I cannot claim abundant sympathy for people who don't vote. With television as widespread as it is, there is no real excuse for lacking at least a rudimentary knowledge of the issues. You need not be literate. However, add at least some literacy to the mix and your lack of voting is a shame. So, the majority of voters put us here. You know, we hear it both ways. Folks question how the majority of Americans must be stupid based on the vote. On the other hand, we have folks claiming that we have a tyranny of the minority. Here's a clue: the people voted. No matter how much money, influence, or power George Bush has, the people could have voted for someone else. In fact, if money and power were the only ingredients, we'd have President Cheney, who is far wealthier than Bush in the first place. Just because you didn't like the results doesn't mean the results aren't legitimate. That's true no matter who wins the election. Suck it up, and vote in the next cycle. As for you, Hades, you are the whimsical majority against whom the founding fathers worked to protect us. Democracy is just short of being my personal religion. In that belief, you are a heretic. In great enough numbers, and with great enough resources, you and your ilk would pose a real threat to our nation. Luckily, you only have one vote. I can take losing on an issue or in an election. That's fine. ...But you would destroy something that works because you want to "fix" it. I would say you exhibit the worst of the mob mentality but for the fact that I doubt the premise of your mentality.
  23. toxa is actually neuter, which means the verb will be singular. Welcome to ancient Greek. Regular verbs can be pretty hard to find.
  24. τιωες - I'm having a hard time finding the root for this word. Is it some form of of τιω? αισχπως - I'm taking this as shame. Once again, I can't seem to find this word, although αισχως is shame or deformity seem close. Also, αισχρως - is shameful or shame-causing. ερριψαν - is just the 3rd person aorist of "to throw or cast" Okay, I'm going to give my best shot at a translation. Be forewarned, however, I'm simply not sure about this translation. "For some generals cast him out shamefully thus to desolation, the wilderness bringing [him?] to an end in sickness. Just as there are also here the necessary weapons [bows] - the weapons of Heracles." Sorry, Tigranes, but that's as good as I can do right now. I can look into it later and get back to you this afternoon. I'm sure there are mistakes in all that. The only question is, do the mistakes actually change the basic meaning?
