I'm not convinced it's the issue, but the easiest thing is to get a replacement. Good idea, alan. I've already authorized my RMA and packaged the video card. It doesn't cost me anything other than the shipping and it's got a good chance of fixing the problem. If it doesn't, then I'll work at it from other angles. Instead of continuing to kill this thread (sorry, arkan) I'll create a new one to educate others with my mistakes. BTW: I hear there's a flashlight mod that lets you use your flashlight on your weapons. I'm thinking about finding it, even though I'm not one of those folks who hated the flashlight in DOOM 3.

Thanks, Bok, I'll give that a shot.

I should have gone for the x1900, alan. You haven't had any problems running anything so far, have you? Anyhow, I just played some more DOOM 3. If the system hasn't gone completely haywire when I exit, the smartdoctor refreshes the temperature. The GPU was 49C when I exited DOOM3 at 1280x1024 maxed in everything except AA, which was x8. So, I'm afraid it might be temperature related, which means, since I'm not going to buy a new motherboard and video card at this point, getting a good GPU heatsink and fan. A 3rd party solution for a new video card. Damn. I wonder how many there are available at this point.

See, I'm the opposite. I used the Nav4All and it told me to take a wrong turn at Albuquerque and ended up south of the border. When I realized my mistake, the federalies were on my trail, so I snuck back across the border and ended up on the run from la migra. What does all this tell you? Stay away from the Nav4All. It will only lead you to trouble. Plus, don't drink the water in Mexico.

I've added DOOM 3 to my FEAR experience and now I'm afraid my video card sucks. Of course, these things happen. Wish it didn't with $500 video card purchases, but someone must take the plunge so others can learn. So, you are or are not suggesting Savoir Faire, Nartwak? I could use a break from graphics whoring shooters for awhile.

I played some Doom 3 last night. It's a good game, but my current rig can't handle the full graphics at 1600x1200 settings. The FPS rate just crawls. In some areas, it's in the single digits. For some reason, my system runs FEAR much more smoothly than DOOM 3. With FEAR, I lowered some of my advanced graphics settings so my FPS rate test never went lower than ~35 (I've tested it a few times and I get different results). During the game, I've gotten a rate as low as 28 FPS. In DOOM 3, even at 1280x1024 and AA down to x8, I have several areas where the FPS rate dips to ~15. Anyhow, I exited DOOM 3 and, just as it was with FEAR, the system went wonkie. The Asus SmartDoctor displayed 40C, but it quickly went to 48C and then back down again, so I don't think I can trust the sensor software. Of course, even getting over 50C shouldn't kill the whole system. I mean, it's not like it was 75C. Moreover, shouldn't the system become more stable as the temperature gets back into a normal range? Once it's gone wonkie, the system won't do with anything other than a full system reboot. I let the thing sit after it got wonkie yesterday and eventually it gave me a message that my drivers had stopped working. My gut instinct is that the software stops tracking during the game or something and then picks back up again after I exit. without a full load, the temperature fluxuates between 38-42C on the video card. The rest of the system logs temperatures normally, but the video card doesn't keep a log so I don't know what the hell the deal is. Anyhow, if you've made this far in my long post, is there an Omega driver solution for nvidia like there is for ATi? I've had good luck with nvidia in the past, but this experience is really harshing my buzz.

Fixed. You're welcome, friend.

Well, FEAR runs great but causes my system to go nuts after I quit. I mean, the screen flickers something fierce and it locks and unlocks. I've tried everything. I've lowered the settings, logged the MB, CPU, GPU, and HDD temps, tried waiting to see if maybe it would settle itself. Nothing works except a complete system reboot. I don't think it's the heat. If it is, then the sensors are all lying. I think it might be the driver or the copy protection. It's just driving me batty. Of course, I seem to have lost my HL2 CD-Key. I guess I'll write to them tomorrow and see if it finally paid to register the game. If not... well I've played it through twice, so it's not a huge deal. I can't believe I misplaced the CD-Key. I've got all of the other ones, but no HL2. Dammit.

Nice screenie. I'm going to reinstall it right now. That and HL2 to see if I can find any similarities with my FEAR problem with other graphics intensive FPSs. I haven't played any mods for any of the three, but I might pick up a few while I wait for something new.

Yeah, but Microsoft was going the "home entertainment" route a long time ago and their new "home entertainment system" is a lot cheaper.

If it takes a while (half-an-hour from boot) to crash, and when you restart the game straight away, there is no problem for a similar amount of time, then it is probably driver-related. Otherewise, it is probably temperature-governed. NVidia have some weird FEAR driver issues, I was reading, like it is the only game that has a working profile for Quad-SLI (that is faster than ordinary SLI), so I wouldn't be surprised if their drivers are a little wonky at the moment. Still, there shouldn't be issues with the DVD ... you might want to try the "no-CD" crack, or copy the entire DVD to a new partition in your harddrive ... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually, the game runs without a hitch. I've played it hours at a time without problem. However, when I exit the game, the vast majority of the time, the screen flickers and windows doesn't respond properly. I mean, my FPS don't even dip during game play or anything. Then, when I quit, everything goes haywire. The one time it didn't, City of Heroes started doing the same thing.

Hades just needs a good therapist. He needs to find someone less crazy than himself, which leaves me out. Nartwak, on the other hand, is quite the clever fellow. Just looking at his signiture can be therapy in a hypnotic sort of way.

The more I read Blank's report, the more I like it. It's probably my favorite TOMBS story. Of course, I'm biased. After all, it's about Cant. I love the line: "Cant, though a little more laid back this evening than how I normally saw him, can usually be described as an Eldar without the chutzpah." bwahahaha

Intuitive Rules - 2nd Ed. AD&D vs. D&D 3E/3.5
Cantousent replied to Lancer's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
Yeah, but that's true for 3rd edition also. I mean, if you hate 3rd edition already, no problem. It's all crap. However, if you like the core rules, then you might want other supplements. Only thing is, the supplements are either unnecessary or terrible. I haven't read all the extra books, but I just think the extra stuff is only there to make money, not to advance the game. -

There are quite a few difficulties in using transplants within a so-called race. It's just a question of degree. So, the question is, does the ability to transplant from one human to another decide the race issue? Ah, you're just being a doofus anyhow.
