Sad, funny and scary at the same time. Our new AI overlords will be able to enhance and amplify the collective stupidity of the internet with an unparalleled efficiency Edit: @Malcador I don't know what game that was, but the story as told, was hilarious. Damn cryptocurrency miners making life hard for gamers

I don't think I was the only one who enjoyed the read -
People in those countries appear to have way less self entitlement issues, than people in more fortunate places. Edit: And the point wasn't about life in Hiroshima post 1945, but life in Western Europe post 1960, which just so happened to be located next to The Soviet Union and having at best, at any moment of every day, 30 minutes warning before your reality looked like the picture. Edit2: And yes, that was a bit of a concern and something people worried a bit about.

Honest opinion time... people today are soft Try spending the first 30 years of your life never knowing if you're going to wake up tomorrow or end up as the proverbial shadow on a wall before daylight. All that worrying about a virus that is both avoidable (if people could get out of their cozy little comfort zones) and at this point in time also treatable (as in treat the symptoms, not to be confused with cured) in those parts of the world where you can afford throw money at problems (like, having actual, workable healthcare systems). Yet, it's the latter part of the world that whinges the loudest for some reason.

I've been getting some mileage out of that combo vaccine I got some months back (whooping cough/tetanus/diphtheria), hanging out with my friends and their newborn daughter a few times now. They are quite adorable when not even two months old and of a happy disposition. Getting to cuddle a bit with "Uncle Gorth" and when it's time to leave, I can just hand her back to her parents with an "I'll be back and borrow her in a few weeks time again" I got the vaccine because newborns can't really be vaccinated against whooping cough and I sure as heck didn't want to drag something avoidable into their home. -
From the same story... Last week, a man was charged by police after posting a social media video of crossing the Auckland boundary in search of McDonald’s.

Monty Python would've been proud, if it wasn't for that actual quite serious ramifications... https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-58629592 More than 250 people seeking relocation to the UK - many of whom are in hiding - were mistakenly copied into an email from the Ministry of Defence. Their email addresses could be seen by all recipients, showing people's names and some associated profile pictures. The MoD has apologised in a statement. The email was sent to interpreters who remain in Afghanistan or have been able to get to other countries.

To be honest, my exposure to "real" Australians is a bit limited. Working in a multinational and very cosmopolitan environment, local politics is less of a concern if it doesn't affect the economy. But the Aussies I do know are mostly indifferent. Keep in mind the supremacy of the Murdoch media group (which includes Fox News and Sky News), part of the population are your mix of QAnon cultists, anti-vaxxers, flat earthers, bible waving enthusiasts etc. and the other part is the disgruntled, but also disillusioned Australia, who feels the fight against government corruption and the police state methods applied against the few independent media that actually do exist, is soul crushing. In short, I'm not sure it even makes headlines anywhere. Real estate prices making it impossible for young families to own their own home is way more of a concern these days when listening to people talk. The complete collapse of a "normal" economy in the wake of covid meant the expected bubble burst and depression (with a slight reset of real estate prices) in 2020 didn't happen the way it was expected.

Maybe Philosophy, Maybe Madness, Or Maybe just the Meme Quotes....
Gorth replied to Raithe's topic in Way Off-Topic
Not sure if it qualifies as philosophy, but one of the most enlightening pieces of literature I ever read (as a young teenager) was the cave allegory from Plato's "The Republic". Not going to quote part of a book here, but I would warmly recommend it as reading and as the proverbial "food for thought". Once we accept our limitations, we can work on expanding our horizons (the best way I can summarize it in my own words). -
Lots of historians debate the chains of events that led to the fall of the Roman empire. I have my own personal theory about what led to the fall of the British empire

Sort of a toss up between here and the politics thread…. What it’s like losing someone close to you to a cult (QAnon) https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57369349

Better yet, they bought the planes before any parts existed (early 1960’s). The specs were probably state of the art in the 1960’s, but they didn’t start showing up until the late 70’s because of technical problems. They never got rid of that image. Planes crashing didn’t help the perception of being very expensive money pits. Not as bad as the Bundeswehr’s experiences with the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter mind you. That one tried to kill as many German fighter pilots as the allies did in wwii (exaggerated a bit, it didn’t get close to numbers) edit: The Collins class is what you get when you sack your German U-Boot partner to replace them with US partners

Because I lived 5 years in Adelaide, I was quite used to see the ASC yards down at the harbour. But the Collins class procurement issues only ranks the 12th worst managed Australian defense procurement debacle. https://www.aph.gov.au/About_Parliament/Parliamentary_Departments/Parliamentary_Library/pubs/rp/rp0102/02RP03 Sadly, it doesn't list the 11 issues above it, but I'm sure the F-111 acquisition ranks up there...

Her student debt (student loan) still exceeds her assets, so a net negative. Not necessarily rich. She'll probably end up loaded if she spends a life time in congress, no disagreement there. Still, it was a stunt well done and she got a lot of media attention for her message.

It's not a solution per se, more like a patch, but I dropped using credit card years ago. Debit card only, and an account with no more funds than I know I need for my next few online payments. If the proverbial **** hits the fan, I'll likely be a few hundred dollars out max. -
Exactly. If anything, she's doing exactly what she says, "Taxing the rich", by making them pay sizeable dollar amounts for the tickets... but whoever made the text doesn't understand the meaning of the words used. Probably a lot of readers/viewers who doesn't understand it either. Edit: Just in case it's necessary, no AOC isn't on the rich list https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/03/09/fact-check-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-net-worth-not-1-m/6924378002/

China upset because neighbours wont just bend over and take it in the butt... https://www.bbc.com/news/world-58564837 The UK, US and Australia have announced a historic security pact in the Asia-Pacific, in what's seen as an effort to counter China. It will let Australia build nuclear-powered submarines for the first time, using technology provided by the US. The Aukus pact, which will also cover AI and other technologies, is one of the countries' biggest defence partnerships in decades, analysts say. China has condemned the agreement as "extremely irresponsible". Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said it "seriously undermines regional peace and stability and intensifies the arms race". Particularly hilarious sounding, coming from the country with the largest navy in the world at the moment. "This is an historic opportunity for the three nations, with like-minded allies and partners, to protect shared values and promote security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region," the joint statement read. "This really shows that all three nations are drawing a line in the sand to start and counter [China's] aggressive moves in the Indo-Pacific," said Guy Boekenstein from the Asia Society Australia.

Let's be honest, intelligence is not one of those attributes she is best known for... https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-58581292 In fact, she's joining the bandwagon of jeopardizing peoples lives through her stupidity. "Terrence Dyalsingh said on Wednesday that the "false" post had wasted his department's time. The tweet also claimed the friend had swollen testicles. It has caused backlash from health experts around the world who are concerned about vaccine disinformation. Minaj made the comments on Monday to her 22 million followers." ... "The tweet was also criticised by England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty who said Minaj should be "ashamed". "There are a number of myths that fly around, some of which are just clearly ridiculous and some of which are clearly designed just to scare," he said. "That happens to be one of them. That is untrue"." ... "US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci said the rapper should " be thinking twice about propagating information that really has no basis". " Tl;d;r she's an attention whore looking to stir up things a bit. Maybe it improves her sales figures?

You could argue the Nobel committee has turned into a (partisan) political body. Especially with the so called "peace prize".
