  1. Rewatched DS9 "For the uniform". It's good to be reminded that not all old Trek is good. The high point has to be Starfleet officers casually committing war crimes in pursuit of a personal vendetta and laughing about it in the end. Good times. I didn't remember this episode, but I think it would have killed Sisko for me -- if it wasn't so out of character for all involved, and consequences were so non-existent that it may as well have transpired in a dream or a parallel reality.
  2. Yeah, the "few more here and there" is what's difficult to find accurately represented on a map. At least from a quick search. The protests also map fairly closely to population density. Unsurprisingly, sparsely populated, rural areas are unlikely to see any protests worth noting. Crime rates also seem to be higher in higher pop density areas. It's almost as if... there's more to all of this than red vs blue. Perhaps poverty rates? Nah...
  3. You really should go back to Breitbart for your "answers". The last few you got from JBZD are just crappy Russian memes, in this case a 2016 election results by county map. Here's what the protests actually look like on a map per NBC.
  4. Pretty much. There's some good stuff in there too -- I've thought of asking once or twice, but I have enough on my plate, and it wouldn't be fair to someone else who may actually play it. Case in point, I'd ask for that Barotrauma key, if I hadn't bought it last month and... yep, I haven't got around to even installing it yet. A lot of regulars here are probably in the same boat. re: the spoiler function. I think the way @Bartimaeus described is how it's supposed to work. The forum does seem to do some parsing of bbcode tags but I'm guessing it's a legacy feature and not recommended (or supported?).
  5. I have only played 3 and Soul Harvest. Found the franchise almost by accident, really. Very underrated. As for the interface/controls, the same happened to me initially. But the new scheme handled arranging and using a larger number of items and abilities better so eventually it grew on me. I was looking forward to replaying the original campaign in the upgraded SH engine as per their roadmap, but at this point I don't think it'll happen. What, hot trolls not doing it for you?
  6. Spellforce 3 was a fantastic RPG-RTS hybrid with a nice character-driven plot. And somewhat of a rarity for the genre, it's fully playable in co-op. Speaking of which, they just announced a new standalone expansion.
  7. What is this, 330 BC? Only chumps make phalanxes. A few well-led maniples and an elephant or two and their day is going to be ruined.
  8. As always, notice the (not so) fine print: So you'll actually be launching it off your Origin account, and what you'll get on Steam is little more than a glorified shortcut and maybe a bunch of achievements. Hell, you'd be better off adding it as a non-Steam game because that way you'd only have to go through one layer of DRM.
  9. Dozens of public health and disease experts have signed an open letter in support of the nationwide anti-racism protests. "Infectious disease and public health narratives adjacent to demonstrations against racism must be consciously anti-racist, and infectious disease experts must be clear and consistent in prioritizing an anti-racist message." Protesting is wrong, irresponsible behavior that puts everyone in danger until the right people do it for the right reasons.
  10. So it's been done before for various reasons -including rioting- but you don't think Trump could do it? The US Code section quoted by Zoraptor essentially amounts to "it can't be done, except when it can be", which is a good summary for all restrictions on state power, ever. It's just a matter of what the current president, king, princeps, prime minister or whatever feels he can get away with and that is entirely circumstantial. Whether the US has degenerated past a point where military crackdown can be imposed is debatable, but don't think that there will ever be a dearth of sages happy to engage in ex post facto legal gymnastics to "legitimize" whatever. "That'd be illegal!" said no tyrant ever.
  11. Hmm, not sure. But whenever you paste text with garbage attached, be it links or CSS leftovers, you should see a notice at the bottom along the lines of "pasted as 'rich' text" that also gives you the option of converting to plain text, to the same effect. On desktop, at least.
  12. Well, it's a question of framing. What we are seeing is a middle ground between nothing, and cops and angry mobs firing at each other. With the amount of guns in circulation in the US, I'm surprised that there's only one dead so far.
  13. Fair question, I guess, seeing as how there isn't a universally agreed definition and how often it's referred to. I'd probably point at the definition for at risk-of-poverty from Eurostat, and call that the threshold under which standards of living couldn't reasonably be called "decent" by anyone.
  14. Right. I've read a few things floating around that happened to come not from published studies but preprints even. I think there's a risk that this recent tendency to expect from scientists definite and quick answers will damage trust on science -- even without help from dishonest "scientists".
  15. This one is kind of funny. The Democrat governor goes off half-cоcked -if you're willing to grant him the benefit of doubt- and Trump is quick to pick it up and repeat it. And to no one's surprise, they turn out to be either mistaken or lying. Jail records show most arrested in Minneapolis riots have Minnesota addresses More than 80% of people booked into Minneapolis jails over the past 2 days are from Minnesota
  16. Disputed Hydroxychloroquine Study Brings Scrutiny to Surgisphere "Scientists have raised questions about the dataset published in The Lancet last week that triggered the suspension of clinical trials around the world—and about Surgisphere Corporation, the company behind the study."
  17. Depends. I used to work a part-time job (from home too) where I was glued to the chair for the duration and even bathroom breaks were a problem because work would pile up and customers got ornery. I didn't do 160 hours a month, but weekly I did more than 40. Everyone thought I was busting my butt, including my boss. A friend of mine figured she'd work more hours in the same job and she ended up with anxiety and sleep problems. On the other hand, I remember some low-level sysadmins at the last two big corps I've worked at doing very little actual work in their nominal 8 hours. I'd appreciate if you could quote the post(s) from where you got the idea that anyone is expecting to become a millionaire from working a full-time job, but regardless, I think it's reasonable that giving a business 50% of your waking time should be enough to make a decent living.
  18. Guess we've finally arrived at the destination predicted by Malcador. Regardless, I sincerely hope you're right. Though I'm thinking US steel workers may have felt as you do now.
  19. I'll agree that you can probably predict a riot *in which black people will participate* shortly after the nth occurrence of cops murdering a black person. Not much else though. And if cops showing not just disregard but overt contempt for the lives of the people they are meant to be serving isn't grounds for civil unrest, I'm not sure what is. And I'm glad you're learning new skills. Doctors too, learn new skills for about ten years before they are ready. And you have AIs that can diagnose certain diseases with greater accuracy, and robots that can perform simple surgeries better than humans. An artist never really stops learning, but "art" produced by computer programs is good enough that most people can't tell the difference. That's happening right now. Look back twenty years and think about how much the world has changed. So I hope you'll remember this conversation when twenty years from now a "self-made" data scientist sneers at you for not having learned how to code complex analysis algorithms in whatever language they use by then, from an online course in your spare time.
  20. So despite there being non-blacks rioting too and by your own admission it being limited to non-law abiding blacks, this is a "black" behavior how? Also, I really hope you're making headway on those free online network analysis courses. Advanced math is not something you just teach yourself overnight and it's not a question of if but when, that glorified Roombas will be able to do your job, whatever it is, for a fraction of what you make. Good luck.
  21. Wow, that's a legit game. I wasn't sure what you meant either but then I went to the review area. Good times.
  22. Who are you talking about? Here or elsewhere? Who is defending crime? Who is pounding you? Look, I really hate how everything is sexist or racist or whatever-ist and that is used to immediately shut down debate these days, but if you say that blacks rioting is a "mainstay" of the US, that is pretty much by definition a racist remark. You are ascribing a specific behavior to a certain race. It also just happens to be patently wrong because it's not hard to find videos with non‑blacks participating in the riots.
