  1. Both minors were charged. It is procedural when an official report is filed, which is what the boy's parents did. It is not something that is typically prosecuted. He also took similar actions with his daughter. He had loaded her up and had her halfway to juvenile hall. So he isn't just holding the boy accountable, he is holding his daughter as well. Hey, guess what guys, being a parent is hard. A lot of folks suck at it. This dad was trying to teach his daughter and her boyfriend a lesson. Did he cross a line? Yes. Did they deserve it? Yes. What if the father did the exact opposite here? What if he ignored the behavior? What if he just let her have sleepovers with her boyfriend and never interferes at all? He becomes a bad father, his daughter probably gets pregnant in High School. Does this make him a better cop? I know there is a middle ground here, but he didn't shoot the boy, he scared him, so I don't think he crossed so far over the line that he deserves to lose his career.
  2. That doesn't seem a bit young to you guys? I get that he was close to the same age. Again, he wasn't formally charged or anything, well, not until his parents filled out a report. The officer didn't actually take him downtown and book him. He put on handcuffs, yelled, lectured, and then let him go.
  3. Emotional distress? What a crock. A healthy dose of fear is just what teenagers need.
  4. Should you also be held accountable if you misused your powers while doing so? Of course! Should he lose his career because of it? Think of the actual damage done here. A kid was frightened. Oooooooh! He deserves a reprimand, sure. He could have handled/it better, maybe worked with the boys parents, sure. But destroying his career over it is severe. Does he have any other history of abusing power? Probably not. If they fire this kid, the lesson learned is suddenly that Dad's have to tread carefully when protecting their daughters. I'd rather live in a world where boyfriends should be a bit terrified about their girlfriend's dad.
  5. Would I use my power as a teacher to protect my daughter from a sexual relationship? Of course! That is the kind of question only people without children would ask.
  6. Bringing up Hitler is a bit absurd. This cop broke rules, the problem with fascism is everyone is following rules. You also don't stop being a father when you put on a uniform. I have a hard time taking away someone's livelyhood becauise he scared a dumb kid.
  7. I am a figure of authority. I greatly respect myself.
  8. I'd say the officer may deserve a reprimand, more because he didn't include the boy's parents on the charade than anything else. Although the story is a bit confusing on that element, it sounds like the boy's parents originally went along with it. The boyfriend may be young and impressionable, but that didn't stop him from doing a very adult act with the officer's daughter. Again, I have a hard time sympathizing with him for a few different reasons. Number one, I have a daughter and I can see myself doing the same thing (notice he also took his daughter to juvenile hall to scare her as well.) Two, I have a son and would fully support him getting scared to death in this type of situation. And three, I work with dumb kids all day long, and a healthy dose of fear is the only reason I can do my job. Without it my classroom would be anarchy.
  9. http://www.mercurynews.com/bay-area-news/c...6989?source=rss The story here is that a protective father used his job to scare the pants off his daughter's boyfriend after he found out they had sex. Now the cop is on administrative leave and the boy has filed charges. As a father, I really have a hard time siding with the dumb teenage kid. Heck, as a teenager I was very aware of the fact that one of the girls I knew had a cop for a dad. When we got into a car accident one night because I was driving too fast, the first thing I did was call her father and apologize. What does everyone else think?
  10. Does arguing semantics really make it easier to clear your conscience when you copyright infringe someone else's hard work? It is still a crime, can we agree on that?
  11. We are forgetting the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes.
  12. No, it's really not. Is someone supposed to buy an album on a leap of faith? Christ, it would take several hundred dollars just to stumble upon a band you enjoy. I don't know about you, but I only buy music from bands that I already know and enjoy (exception for debut albums, of course). If you were to deny people the means of discovering obscure music, which these days is mainly piracy, obscure music would die. There are quite a few avenues to legitimately sample music. I have a hard time believing this obscure music you are talking about is only available via illegal methods.
  13. That is a fairly ridiculous argument. It's ok to pirate because the album is difficult to find? Really, that's a major stretch.
  14. Yeah, I'll disagree with that. TW voice is atrocious. It is severely grating. Shephard is nowhere near those levels.
  15. Anyone else playing Minecraft? The game is super addictive. I haven't touched the multiplayer element and I'm curious as to how it works. Does someone need to host the game and then let others join it with an IP address? Anyone interested in setting up an Obsidian world? I have a fairly slow DSL setup, I'm out in the boonies, but I'm not sure how important it is to have high speed for this game. I'd host the game if I can without everyone having a ton of latency.
  16. Giving a mix tape to a friend or two is a lot different then giving out mix tapes to a few thousand folks.
  17. You are trying to justify something that is quite simple. You have a company that puts time and resources into a product, and then they ask for a certain amount of money for it. When you take it without paying, it doesn't matter what you call it, it is wrong.
  18. With all the suggestions about reading comprehension classes, perhaps we should organize a forum workshop? I have a couple binders with reading comp. materials around here, I'd be happy lead one for a modest fee
  19. Minecraft - Holy moly, the time just flies by. I finished up my crafting shop and turned off the game last night, and was shocked at how late it was.
  20. I still buy music. I buy music that has recently been released by bands that still exist. That doesn't mean anything at all. Because you do something legally most of the time does not excuse doing it illegally some of the time.
  21. Is the voice-acting on the same level as Risen? I thought Risen was leagues above the Gothic games in the voice acting.
  22. The other day I came across my copy of NHL '94 for the Super Nintendo. It was a nice little bit of reminiscence, but in the end I threw it away. I have no Super Nintendo, it's old technology, and time has marched on. I went out and bought NHL '11.
  23. I'd be more concerned if Valve wasn't such an extremely successful company. They aren't going to just implode someday. There is a chance they will shift business models, like WalMart did with their music store, but I believe it is in their best interest not to burn all their customers. I also don't care about my game collection that much and don't expect it to last me for decades.
  24. If Pakistan goes radical, a war between India and Pakistan is likely. Given that these are nuclear countries, it would be hard for an country not to get involved. A la WW3.
  25. Drawing comics is hard work.
