Sam Biddle is being moved elsewhere within Gawker. This decision was made prior to GG. Yeah... I believe it. /sarcasm http://www.businessinsider.com/sam-biddle-is-leaving-valleywag-2014-10

Word on the Twitter-band is that Hulu is now pulling out from Gawker. Still taking it with a grain of salt atm.

I must not be very smart, because I can't make head or tail of this flow chart one bit...where does it start, why isn't everything connected, what's going on For a flow chart, it certainly doesn't seem to flow. Stagnant puddle chart.

I think The Dell guy and the Verge article pushed Erik Kain to a more Pro-GG stance. I think it is also that he has been trying to push a sit down debate on the issue, and from what I have seen the Pro-GG people have been pretty agreeable while the journalists keep pouring gasoline on the fire.

Interesting clip of a discussion with the folks that made Super Meat Boy on the IGF awards. https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2igfyx/super_meat_boy_developers_edmund_mcmillen_and/

UAT just announced it is pulling ads from Gamasutra, as well. http://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/2ihw46/

Erik Kain's stream was really good, everyone was pretty cool, and it covered a lot of ground. He said he would post the vid later. I recommend watching it if you missed it.

@Elerond - We are going to have to agree to disagree, I fear. As I feel allowing a gaming news agency, as small as gaming journalism is, to ignore releases of information on games is indeed keeping those that disagree from having a voice in and of itself. The press does have to make certain concessions as to what to print, but ignoring a company that they have previously covered who just released major gaming update because of political BS isn't in the same league. Their readers want to know about games, and they aren't reporting about certain games because of politics. I cannot agree that because news in and of itself isn't objective that objectivity shouldn't be something to strive for. Anyone that is the top of their field doesn't stop practicing because they made it. George Carlin practiced his comedy rigourously, Larry Bird showed up to the stadium on game day at 5AM to practice shooting, great musicians practice their instrument of choice daily, and so on because although they will never be perfect... They strive to continually improve. The same is with objectivity in the news. Just because it will never be 100% objective one shouldn't just give up on trying to be so. When we don't ask for an attempt at being as objective as possible from journalists we will never get anything close to it.

I don't see issue any different from campaigns to get advertisers remove their ads from site or just not reading sites because you don't like personal opinions of one of their writers. Media outlets have right to freedom of speech in same way as any other organization, which means that they don't have any obligation to write things they don't want to write. And it is their readers to decide if their coverage is wide, deep fast enough to matter them. Freedom to change what media outlets you read is one of those main principalities of capitalistic media, where belief is that reader/watcher/listeners will change their media outlet to another if their current one don't serve them right. Objective media is similar to unicorns that both sound fantastic but in reality neither actually exist. I see a difference between people writing ad suppliers because they are consumers. The media isn't giving us news in some cases because it conflicts with the writer's, editor's, or their owner's views, and has nothing to do with informing their consumers. News is about informing your consumers in the least biased way possible. Also, there isn't many options to gamers in the media world. There are precious few, but to say "go somewhere else" is to ignore the problems in the media, and eventually the same behavior will be seen in those news outlets as well. Except the media outlets aren't people, but a media outlet. Their morals, politics, and the like are irrelevant as their job is reporting news. Those views are relevant in opinion pieces and editorials, but they can't expect to survive by insulting their readers. They have a right to freedom of speech, but they also have an obligation to their readership to try and cover everything in their field as fairly and objectively as they can. I would also say that their freedom of speech should never supersede that of the developer creating a game. Their job is to report that the game is getting made, and to show it. If they cannot do that they are a useless website. Objective media/unicorns - So, because something like objective media doesn't exist we should move on? Not discuss it? If you do not call these people out now then as an eventualality their next bias run of "news" may not be so benign, and perhaps will start stepping on civil liberties "for the greater good." In that, those that say, "just get news elsewhere" have no one to blame but themselves for not taking a stand. if this were one isolated media outlet then it wouldn't be an issue, but it is almost all of them and IMHO stepping to another outlet is the least responsible thing we could do. To each their own though.

Rumor is Nvidia is talking about following intel's example and pulling ad support. I think specifically they said they were pulling support from Kotaku, but that is second hand. This was said in a KiA stream by an Nvidia employee I believe. Trying to find the stream. Take this with a gigantopithecus sized grain of salt.

I guess we don't really want objective media then? I could easily say that if I ran a media outlet I would cover games by a developer that has political views that I disagree with. Daniel Vavra has said nothing mysoginistic, but only sided with gamergate because of the narrative and censoring of discussion. The developer's politics should have no bearing. A complete left wing democrat can create a wonderful game, as can a staunch conservative, a dictator, an anarchist, etc. It "is" childish to stop someone from getting press because you disagree with them on a personal level but have no issue with the game they are working on. How can anyone say they want objective news when we let the media cherry pick based on political ideology that has no bearing on the game? That is a road to "That guy is a moderate conservative so we don't have to cover his game." "That girl disagreed with that article I wrote so I am not going to cover her." "That person is religious and I think they are loony so I am going to avoid an article about their title." This is why writers are supposed to detach themselves as best as humanly possible in the journalism field. You cannot do it 100%, but when you don't cover news because of your beliefs you aren't even trying. Is it possible this is just a delay? Sure, but in other trailer releases and Alpha announcements of Kickstarter success stories I don't remember 4ish day delays on these kinds of announcements. hey, but I could be wrong here. Still seems fishy to me. Torment tides of numenera released their trailer on Sept 17th, and Kotaku had an article that day and while RPS and Gamasutra had one within 24 hours. So, I have trouble swallowing the "maybe it is a delay" belief. I would love to be wrong and to see more articles pop up about Kingdom Come's trailer and alpha though.

You mean the trailer that starts at around 12:40 in that video update that is an official teaser trailer? Edit: Seems gamespot finally posted the video. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/non-fantasy-rpg-kingdom-come-alpha-coming-october-/1100-6422747/

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/pressreleases/209269/Warhorse_Studios_Hits_Kickstarter_Target_For_Kingdom_ComeDeliverance_in_48_Hours.php http://kotaku.com/tag/kingdom-come-deliverance http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/01/22/warhorse-on-kingdom-comes-kickstarter-episodic-plans/ There are links to gamasutra, kotaku, and RPS discussing KC: D prior to GG, and during their kickstarter. The video has been out for 3 days I believe, and cinemablend is the only article I have seen. You are free to prove me wrong and find a few others, and you can check the other major sites to see if they promoted the game up until the past month or so. This is enough to make a logical assessment that they are trying to hurt these devs for disagreeing. I doubt they will publicly say, "We won't cover you now." That proves one of the major points of the GG movement that they are strong arming indies that don't step into line.

I think it is definitely something that has allowed this to happen, but most definitely not the core thing. I think insulting the readers and following with censorship tactics with continued name calling is what did it predominantly. However, the years of click bait articles, and other things, were what created the disenchantment that allowed the bubble to pop. Side Note: https://mobile.twitter.com/erikkain/status/518531324215570435 Erik Kain getting a few people together to stream for a debate tomorrow. TotalBiscuit, Greg Tito, and Janelle Bonanno will join Erik Kain to debate GG.

I was about to post that Forbes article myself lol. I love Erik Kain. I don't agree with him 100% of the time, but I feel that if the other gaming journalists aspired to be as objective as he does then they wouldn't get so much crap. He was one of the sole voices to support fans during the ME3 escapade, and I have followed him since. I agree with most of this article, and his conclusion. Alexander's inflammatory comments in the second part Fighter quoted are "the" reason this really blew up, and the flames were fanned by every insulting remark that she made on Twitter and the disallowing of comments on the articles themselves. Then the reddit and 4chan censorship occurred to exacerbate an already critical state. The things Milo uncovered with the GamesJournoPros list showed that they were coordinating instead of competing. Someone needs to explain to the journalists that insulted their readers for differing opinions that just because someone disagrees with them doesn't mean the person disagreeing is a horrible person. These journalists have a very narrow view and cannot understand that with 7 billion people on the planet that not everyone will agree, but not agreeing doesn't make those people ****lords. I think a few of these journalists have burned their credit with the community. They may survive this with their jobs, but they will likely lose a lot of pull with their community. Another grievous issue IMHO is that none of the major outlets have covered the new trailer for Kingdom Come: Deliverance. They refuse to cover it because Daniel Vavra is pro-GG. This to me is horrible as it proves they cannot be objective. The only place to mention this video is Cinemablend. One of my biggest issues for being pro-GG is the clique potentially ignoring indie devs that don't fall into line with the media's demands or ideals. This issue already supposedly occurs in other entertainment industries like film and books. I don't believe a conservative writer or actor should be ostracized because they don't agree with the media or the industry execs. Just because someone has different ideals doesn't mean that can't be a good artist whether that be a developer of games, and actor, an author, a painter, etc. If these journalists wanted to be seen as objective they would have covered this trailer. They can only do their job if the developers fall into line though. It is BS, and is a greater issue of corruption than a AAA publisher pumping money into a site for an 8/10 instead of the 7/10 they may have gotten. http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Kingdom-Come-Deliverance-Video-Update-Covers-Alpha-Release-Date-67626.html

@Keyrock - IIRC Gamasutra (Leigh Alexander in particular) was the first "gamers are dead" article to hit the web. Edit: I could be wrong though. Take that with a grain of salt I guess. I would say that Leigh Alexander is probably the most vocal and hateful press people that I have seen speaking out against GG.

Except they did pull their ad support because of GG. They pulled it because they were spending money to run ads on a site that has caused their consumer base to fight. They don't want to be seen supporting either side because it could cause a loss of sales either way. They backed out because they were spending money and seen as supporting one side. Now they are not spending money, and just clarified that they aren't supporting either side. Most of the big companies are going to get antsy with Christmas coming. If GG keeps going strong Intel won't be the last company. Keep in mind that most AAA game companies probably see more benefit hosting their own videos and TV ads (perhaps even youtubers) than banners on these sites. I don't expect to beat back feminism. I don't have any stake in feminism. I expect to get a media that can act their age by not calling their consumers names, not shut down discussion, and actually compete with one another instead of communicating and deciding a single narrative. I also am still suspect of the IGF/Fez connection, and don't think the person (or people) in charge of the IGF should be able to personally invest in the games submitted. As an aside: Steam also changed their Curator disclosure agreement to enforce Curators to show if they have received financial compensation to advertise a particular piece of software. This is also a win for GG, IMHO.

Should I be upset that Intel supports women? I am not as I support women. Intel made a business decision to not have their brand supporting an article that caused a schism in an industry that they rely on financially. intel still pulled support for a website that was intending to and succeeded to cause derision among their customers. I never expected Intel to say "Go Gamergate!!!" I expect companies to pull support because they don't want to have their brands to look for or against either group. However, GG survives without ad revenue. The media doesn't. Which is something they seem to forget. I also think that the other companies will start laying down real pressure on the mdia outlets if this keeps up getting closer to the Christmas season. They have a bottom line and investors to consider. Yay! Capitalism!
