Fails to start on OSX 10.10.2
RoughOne replied to dlpatri's question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
You will find the application in this folder: Macintosh Harddrive ▸ Users ▸ *your username* ▸ Library ▸ Application Support ▸ Steam ▸ SteamApps ▸ common You can either launch it from there, or move a copy of it to your Applications folder and it will launch from there. That solved this issue for me. It works fine for me using the current version of Yosemite. If you cannot see your Library folder, google how to make it visible and follow those directions. Once you've copied it to your applications folder, you can make things invisible again if you prefer. I hope this helps. -
I think that Obsidian has their own staff doing beta testing as well. A full version release to this community would not serve any purpose other than a 'pre-release' of the whole game, which is unfair the those who backed it at non-beta testing levels.

This will probably be the last backer beta that we do. Not sure how long we will keep everything open, though. We still need to talk about the particulars. That makes total sense given the time constraints and release date.

[392] Enemy casters need to be more threatening
RoughOne replied to PrimeJunta's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I like some of the new classes approach to magic, like the Chanter. I do have to agree, however, Wizards are a non plus for me, in general. I simply hate the idea of DnD 'spells' and have since I ran table tops. I wished PoE had given some thought to a more component based system, like Ars Magica. A fireball spell would be akin to a fire element component, a shape, and a motion component. The more 'mana' you channel into said spell, the bigger the bang, the farther away the target, the more mana required. Every wizard could create their own spells to suit their character this way. Learn bits and pieces of the system to suit the character. -
I play games like these to escape reality. I get truly annoyed when I am faced with finding water, shelter and sustenance in a game. I'd much rather see this as a checkbox on the start up screen than a 'feature' of the game.

A Plea for better communication of changes/better patch notes
RoughOne replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I believe that the backer level of 'beta tester' was something of a misnomer when it was created. I believe what we have, as backers, is an early demo of the game. We serve as additional debuggers and that is about it. The functionality of the game is modified in house for the most part and that is how the process works. Sensuki, you should be commended for the work you have done for this game. I'm stunned at the level of detail in your postings, your concise way of reporting things and the way you think about issues. I can but hope the folks at Obsidian realize how difficult it is to find a resource such as yourself in testing. You have created excellent dialogue about game concepts and balance. Dialog is always of value in my opinion, and logical arguments often improve or reinforce systems design. Flame wars do not, but those seem to arise from the frustrations of those less knowledgeable about the details of the constructs but still passionate about the side they feel they are on. Needless to say, they happen along with the s*it. I hope you see this through, regardless of the outcome of the functional balance WRT the game system. -

[Issue] Fix casting Cone and Ray Spells please
RoughOne replied to Sensuki's question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
Yes, I could not agree more about this. I've been playing the beta for a while now and I have had little utility for much of the magic since it is such a pain to use many of the spells. Most of the spells I have had no chance to actually try given the limited circumstances in which they can safely be used with a party. -
Yeah the save/load cycle is the most critical issue, imo. It really needs to be fixed to make the beta usable imo. Thanks for this update. The delay will be worth it.
-
You still need room to display skills. Personally, I don't mind the linearity of the character generation process. Empty space on the screen doesn't bother me. Perhaps the process is longer due to your being in the beta and creating a series of characters?

I hope that is means the mac version too.

I would like to encourage that Obsidian routinely target a build to all current operation systems whenever they do any build. I use both PC and Mac environments routinely, but I specifically backed this game for two reasons: It was a game concept that I loved, and that it was going to be brought directly to the Mac OS X, my OS of choice. While games are getting more common place as the OS gains in popularity, it is still the ugly stepchild to the PC platform. I had hoped that this game could break that and release for all platforms at the same time. So, I waited to download the beta for Mac, rather than PC. And I waited ... and I waited. Now that the Mac beta is out, I have to say I am somewhat frustrated with the fact it is basically unplayable beyond, basically, one area past the town. I've gotten to three dungeon/cave areas exactly once each. That seems to be the 'range' of saved games. It seems that once you get beyond a certain number of saved games, the game crashes when you attempt to reload/continue etc. You have to restart with a new character and go from there. Since it is not that difficult to target a new platform from a build (recompile with another target, etc) I would strongly urge Obsidian to make their build process across platforms to be in parallel for all platforms once a new one (linux too) is targeted. Yes, this takes a bit of resources, but really not that much, since you are making new targets for the PC now. As I am sure you are aware, there will be platform specific issues for each, and the sooner those are uncovered by beta testers specific to those platforms, the sooner they can be addressed. I am loathe to think that the PC version is the sole focus for testing and then the Mac and lastly the Linux, but given the input of the boards, that is the impression that I get. I would also strongly urge there be a break out of the bugs boards by platform, so a user of those platforms can quickly discern if their current issue is a known one. I've searched many times for terms like 'mac' 'macintosh' or 'os x' and had no returns on those search terms. Having a specific starting point would be most helpful. Thank you for your attention to this. I love what I have seen thus far and think this will be an excellent game. I just hope I am not playing it once the PC version has been played, hashed and all manner of hints, solutions and walkthroughs litter the web.

I've run the app in Yosemite 10.10.1 as well as 10.9 and on an old Mac Book Pro with 10.7 on it and it runs just fine (dragged the application from the steam application support folder in the user library to the applications folder and ran it from there with zero issues. [i hate Steam anyway, so that's just fine] I've experienced no crashing from what I would call "graphics issues." The sole crash I've experienced thus far are from reloading saved games. Very frustrating, all in all. The game does run very slowly one 10.7, but that does not surprise me. it is still playable after a fashion, but it is a pretty slow experience. I therefore, do not believe the issue to be with Unity at all.
-
You can also copy it from User/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Pillars of Eternit - Public Beta/ to the applications folder and run it from there. That assumes you have hidden files turned on.
-
Basically I just copied the .app file from the Steam library folder to the other machine's application folder and ran it from there. Seems to work pretty well, but it too has save game crashing issues it seems. So the issue I am experiencing is not limited to Yosemite.
-
This is a very general description of what might be a plethora of issues. Is this a crash that occurs when the game launches, which I've seen described as an issue for Mac users, or is this a crash that happens when you try to load a saved game, which occurs form me, or a crash when one tries to save a game, which also occurs. Also, is there a thread specifically for Mac bug reports, or are they all amalgamated into the PC build bug report? When I search for mac related articles, I get zero returns, which seems rather odd. If the game runs on OS 10.9, I will try it in that environment, if Steam will let me download it to another machine.

Mac version crash on launch
RoughOne replied to TrahDivad's question in Backer Beta Bugs and Support
Yes, I've searched the forums many times for 'mac' 'macintosh' 'os x' and found zero returns. Very frustrating. I concur that at this point the mac beta, for me, it pretty useless. I got a taste of combat, which with some online YouTube advice I've had better builds for, but the save / restore makes this build [333] of the beta unplayable. "Hey, everyone. We are aware of the crashing problems on Yosemite right now. After talking to some other projects that are using Unity for their engine the problems may not be unique to our game. We are going to continue to look into it and hopefully it will be something we can resolve on our side and not something that will have to wait for a Unity fix. Thanks for your patience." -- BAdler, Yosemite 10.10 issue thread. The thread "aware of crashing problems on Yosemite" does not describe fully the issue. The game does crash on me, but it is only when loading a saved game. is that the same issue? Without a reference in that post to an actual issue thread, I have no clue if I am experiencing the same issue that Obsidian is talking about. -
I get lots of emails from kickstarter, as I support many of them. I have gotten them from Obsidian in the past, but no more. I will subscribe to the board, so perhaps I will get notified that way. Thanks!

The combat message log occupies so much screen real estate, I don't use it. When you change screen resolution, which I tried to get games to load after a few saves, it would take up most of the screen, since it did not seem to resize to the new screen size at all. The mac build is impossible to play after one or two saves. It just keeps crashing. I very much would like to play the beta, but I've not gotten very far in it yet due to this issue. So for me, the 'prettiness' of the UI is the least of the beta's issues. My number one issue for the mac build is lack of suitable stability in order to actually play the game. It is silly to even have a mac build that is this unstable. -

Yes, I totally agree here. I found those screens very confusing. I suspect the 'prettiness' of this will happen near the end of the beta process, at the same time as content veracity.
