Just remember, you lose a party member and they are gone forever. You will have to replace them with a NPC from the Adventurers Hall and they wont have banter/quests/personality. Holy Smoke Gfted1, you sure know how to make me worried. I could potentially lose someone I would be Romancing !!!! And that would be a crisis of monumental proportions What would be more powerful than seeing your potential LI turn to red pieces of meat in front of your eyes? And at that time, somewhere, Avellone will smile... a fuzzy feeling warming his heart.

And the main lesson from DA2 tham Bioware cannot make decent games in 18 months.

EA got voted worst company two years in a row because gamers- by and large- lack any sort of perspective, self awareness, sense of proportion or relativity; which is more than made up for by the hugely inflated senses of self importance, entitlement and ability to take truly trivial stuff serious. I find it deeply embarrassing even being tangentially associated with a group who think Day 1 DLC for their luxury pursuit is more of an affront than some of the stuff BoA and other entrants pulled. (Yeah yeah, sending a message, BoA always wins etc etc) Gamers. Like a three year old throwing a tanty telling mum and dad that they hate them at the top of their lungs... Yes and no. If i'm not mistaken the site was consumerist. So the vote was exclusivly about which company their customers thought had the worst product/servise whatever. BoA or other companies that cause enviromental destruction deserve to close, but it has nothing to do with consumers. You are not a customer of BoA, not in a day to day basis. They don't sell you a product. So the whole poll was never about changing the world, vote which company violates human rights etc. It was about which company provides the worst servise/has the most disatisfied customers. If you look at it from that perspective, EA is a deserves the award. If there was a poll about the worst company (as in which company causes the most harm), then sure, EA shouldn't be even among the contenders. But that wasn't what the poll was about.

What's wrong with activated abilities?
Malekith replied to decado's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
pausing is the essence of tactics? (IOW you have a real time game, not a turn based one) It's RTwP. In IE i paused evry five seconds, and that's how i liked it. In Da;O i paused once in a blue moon because the game was piss easy, and you could just spam abilities. -
The funny thing is that the "IE mechanics" is a myth. The IE games didn't had the same mechanics. PS:T was different than BGT and IWD, while IWD2 was yet again diffirent. As for fighters being fire and forget, PE will have it. YOU are the one to choose your characters talents. If you want comletely passive, just choose only passive talents.(i prefer completely passive fighters also). If you want your mages to be completely weaklings in physical combat, quess what...you can! The difference is that PE will also provide the choice for those that want it to have a little more active fighters, and a little more passive mages. No one forces you to make your characters that way.

Bull****.The player is the one playing the game and player's skill always matters. The very character creation you love so much requires player's skill and knowlege. Not to mention tactical combat that by definition requires player's tactical input. "player skill trumps character skill" refers to players reflexes playing a role, twitchy action combat. There is no problem as long the player's mental skills AKA strategy and tactics are the ones tested. Else there is no point playing the game. After player creation press Start Game and watch a movie of the game playing itself. make another character and repeat. No player input required. But PE won't be that game.

RPG Codex Josh Sawyer Q&A
Malekith replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
How is it diferent than any IE game you can name? Class>stats. A STR10/DEX10?CON10 is still a better fighter and tank that a STR20/DEX20?CON20 wizard -
That's fine (I don't know if he did writing on BG2 either), but I wasn't saying it with any sort of "it's a good thing." I actually find your point interesting, because people slag on him (incorrectly) for general design stuff when 1) he isn't a designer and 2) a game where he was a designer was one that most here would love. I think this is happening because he is some kind of public face for Bioware. When people critisize him they critisize more the whole company and their direction than him personaly. And some things he says in interviews just rub "old school players" the wrong way. I'm not the biggest fan of Bioware, but David is the one person in the company that if he left EA and gone to kickstart an RPG, i would trust him to deliver a good game.
-
You say that as it is a good thing. I find his writting mediocre, and judging by BG2 and especially Ascession mod by him, he is a good designer. I would be more confident in DA3 with Gaider as Lead Designer instead of writter.

RPG Codex Josh Sawyer Q&A
Malekith replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You are certainly entitled to your opinion. For me, in a combat centric game, I want to be able to bring the hurt and a mechanic who's sole purpose in life is to increase damage across the board is more important to me than +1 HP per level, or whatever similar mechanics you are referring to. It's all about how they balance it. It could easyly be +1 damage per point when a different stat will give +50 hitpoints per point. Given that the whole reason to this system is that Sawyer hates dump stats, i can't imagine that he will create a system that you can pour all your points in a single or even two stats and win the game. -

Your hit-points maybe? Or even your saving throws? If a stat governs damage, another accuracy, you already don't have a ONE STAT TO RULE THEM ALL. Having your hit-points on another stat, stamina in another and soul-power in another automatically means that all are equally important with your damage stat. That's what i think Sawyer wants. -

Loved everything except the part about PE being conservative as far as new IPs go. Why?????????? At least the part about the world supporting more alien/weird elements gives me hope for expansions/sequels. As for the attributes, too early and too little info to know for sure. -

Malekith replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Having your attacks be insta kills won't help you very much if you can't hit a single thing, or if you can also be killed when a goblin comes near you. That is the point of Sawyer's system. ALL stats are usefull, so treating even a single one as a dump stat and have it ignored, will causes trouble for your character. Remember in IE games characters with 19 STR/3CHA? It wouldn't surprise me if having even a single stat at 3 will make your character crippled. -
Obsidian's reputation was mostly earned by their first two games, KOTOR 2 and NWN2. I don't say they are blameless since they accepted the contracts, but they didn't had much choice either. Alpha Protocol wasn't more buggy that most games nowdays, and DS3 was completely bugfree. New Vegas was a return to unstable games, but since not a single game in that ****ing engine was stable in the last 20 years, it's not Obsidian's fault. It's just that because of their earlier reputation people expect bugs in an Obsidian game so they scrutinize their games way more than other's, and blew the whole matter out of proportion.
-
Unless you have around twenty millions in the bank that you want to invest in gaming, obsidian cannot do it without a publiser. No kickstarter game will ever manage to gather AAA badget
-
With that scope and potential, it's hardly doable with mere few millions. Not for US devs anyway. I didn't meant as a FPS. They could make a time-travel sci fi isometric RPG. I would prefer it that way. But if what you wanted is "skyrim is space" then yes, that would need a publiser
-
It's for the best. Now they can use the idea in a kickstarter. It will be a better game without Bethesda's ****ty engine.

Completely agrre with all except the last part. I expect and hope the game to have handplaced loot. Randomized loot is a concept that needs to die outside of Diablo style A-RPGs. IWD2 was the only IE game with a significant portion of randomized loot and it was the worse for it. Also i don't get the complain that soon you will know the content of each place by memory. First of all, why is this a bad thing? Second, for you to be able to memorize the items of an entire game you must have replayed it at least 3+ times. By that point the game has done his job to be replayable, there is no point to worry " what must we do for the poor player that has played the game seven 10 times, there is nothing more to surprise him."
