What is your favorite class at this point?
Marceror replied to Marceror's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I would have to say that my favorite class overall is the Chanter currently, as they just add so much to the group -- and keep in mind, that I don't even use their overpowered summons. From the combat category it's the paladin. I find them to be the most interesting. Once they are working better, this may shift to the ranger. -
Understanding that the classes are very much in flux, I'm curious which classes are currently everyone's favorites at this moment. Feel free to vote in the poll, and share why in the thread if you feel so inclined. I broke the poll into 2 parts, since only 10 poll options are possible in a single poll. Please only vote for your favorite class, and use the "I voted in the other poll" option for the poll that does not contain your favorite.

A question for developers on combat experience
Marceror replied to edtate's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I still want combat xp for significant battles, but I'm pretty much over talking about it too. -
Worst was the original Icewind Dale (IWD2 didn't have this problem because it had a pseudo-point buy). Imagine doing that dice roll dance *six* times before you could start playing the game. Literally most of the time I ever feel like playing IWD again, I give up after trying to roll the 3rd or 4th character. IWD would've had a lot more replayability if I were just given a flat, say, 85 points to distribute. I couldn't remember if IWD 1 had rolling, as it's been a while since I last played it. But okay, so that means 3/5 of the IE legacy had it. The worst part of the game was rolling characters? Wow. I have always enjoyed this part of the process. Even if my first several hours ends up being character creation, I enjoy that as part of the process. For a game like IWD2 and ToEE I will usually add to that process by writing a biography for each of my characters and an overall background for the party. That for me can be just as fun as the game itself. A 6 person party? I literally might spend days mulling over how I want to create my party, changing, iterating, until I'm totally happy. The rolling of attributes just adds to the experience for me. Hell, it might take me an entire week from the point that I start until I'm actually ready to begin my adventure. Is none of this ringing true with any other of the supposed IE fans around here?

How to Fix the Attribute Design in Pillars of Eternity
Marceror replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I've got one word for you: unlimited attribute rolls -
I get your point. And I'll be perfectly happy if the option isn't added to the game (and frankly, if there was a chance before, I'm sure this poll has utterly destroyed that -- nice going Marceror ) That said, where I come from we have a saying, "if it were good 'nuff for Baldur's Gate, it sure hell good 'nuff for me!" Usually this statement is followed by spitting into a small cup for emphasis, and we nearly always get a bull's-eye because we all rolled long enough to get an 18 in Dex.

No priests of Woedica?
Marceror replied to Magnificate's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The best part is that this idea is totally original. -
I can appreciate your perspective, but don't really see how someone rolling for 30 minutes "punishes" someone who uses the fixed point distribution. Maybe if this were a multiplayer game I could see that. But what happens in my game on my PC in my house shouldn't punish, reward, or otherwise affect what happens in your game on your PC in your home. And to that point, there will be people who decide to give all their characters an 18 in all attributes, thousands of health/endurance, etc, etc. I'm not "punished" if I choose to play the game with the balance that the developers intended. If anything, the cheater is punished because they have spoiled their game experience, arguably.

A question for developers on combat experience

LOL, hey OP, we've had this topic many, many times, and very recently in fact, so don't be surprised if you some less than supportive responses. -
/Marceror wakes up from a rather short night's sleep "Hmm, let's check forums.obsidian.net to see of OE has assigned a programmer (or two) to banging out the attribute rolling option" (which I auspiciously expect will happen, even though I made claims to the contrary) /views poll results .... /rubs eyes and looks at them a second time, this time in disbelief /gives eyes a few more seconds, because they clearly aren't working yet .... "Holy hell! .... Really?" To self: "It appears that I am one out of touch old codger. They don't even seem to appreciate the meme...?" (Guess if I ever feel the need, I can always bust out a few D6 and roll the old fashioned way, then input with an editor -- maybe that's for the best) /feels so alone

How to Fix the Attribute Design in Pillars of Eternity
Marceror replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I do and don't understand that perspective. I understand wanting a justification, but it's always seemed fitting to me. Many AoE spells/effects originate at a point and spread outward. Fireball is probably the most obvious example, but I tend to think of most effects that way. You're a super smarty, so as you extend the AoE outward, you are able to selectively shape it at the margins, where it terminates. You can't do it on the interior because that's the origin of the effect, where it's emanating from. That's always been my view of it, anyway. That's a nice justification wrap it up in an in world description and add it to the game somewhere and I think it'd work fine! Just add it to the spell descriptions that it applies to, so no one ever need be confused by why their spell is working this way. -

While I can appreciate your point, I think if OE had taken the time to make a lot of their decisions more of a democratic process with the backers, we'd be looking at a winter 2015 release. The thing about democracy, it isn't speedy. So I kind of get why they hunkered down and quietly did their work. -
Call me a grognard, but I actually enjoy having rolled those stats a lot more than having used an editor to simply set them. I can't really explain objectively why this is the case. I do think it's firmly rooted in nostalgia from the days when I didn't know about such editors. And in terms of ToEE, I never bothered to learn how to use an editor in that game, so any above average characters had to be rolled the old fashioned way.
-
According to Josh he doesn't have any C priority features. I see it as some potential low hanging fruit that will appeal to many of the BG fans. Of course, totally optional. And would suggest not the default option that the game installs with.
-
Not something I would likely use all the time either, but damn, the nostalgia. And every once and a while, the joy of a totally OP MC.
-
Sort of like this:
-
I would love an option to roll attributes at chargen. I very much enjoyed rolling until my eyes bled in the BG series and ToEE. It would be marvy if this was possible in PoE. EDIT - I decided to add a poll to this. To clarify, the poll is just meant to gauge opinions of the community. It is not intended to necessarily imply any action is required on the part of Obsidian Entertainment, should the poll skew in a particular direction.

So, uh, anyone see that Bears' game the other day? Hell of a game. Hell of a game.

Yes... this is clearly a sign that... my manliness is slipping. Clearly! Wholesome and natural... totally. /leaves to put on a jock strap. Uh... make that two.
