  1. Oh man, always this drama about romances in a video game.

    I see it that way, that romances are a topic where the developers simply cannot win/gain anything. They can only lose because no matter what they do, they cannot cater to all tastes, likes and preferences equally. Mind you not only the sexual preferences, but everything that involves the broader topic of romances.

    In this specific instance there seems that a certain character is not available for romance (though I guess it's not 100% verified yet). Rejection hurts, doesn't it? Even if its just by a fictitious character.

     

    Remember Pillars of Eternity 1, where there were no romances at all?
    Well seems almost better that way, doesn't it? Because then it's equal for everyone. Nobody will be able to romance any of the NPCs then. But now in Deadfire romances have been introduced, but Edér doesn't seem to be available. Well, shame on the developers!

    As I see it, the developers were very reluctant to introduce romances to the game series. I may have my suspicions as to why.
    All that drama that romances bring. Of course, the drama also happens when you don't include any romances. People will be outraged. So you introduce romances and you hope you will appease people. Oh no ho ho ho, you couldn't have been more wrong!

    Now people will be enraged because not every single possible preferences (and again I'm not only talking about sexual preference) was included: Edér doesn't seem to be romanceable.

    Must be an agenda by the devs. How dare they to not cater to my needs? It must be because they want to teach me a lesson! How dare they to teach me a lesson?!

    That's the great irony of the topic of romance. It creates so much fury, hate, frustration, resentment and contempt that in the end I think any reasonable developer would have to wonder if it's worth it. But don't expect any less contempt when you don't include them in the first place. People will always find a reason to make the devs lose on this topic, no matter what they do.

    As always, just my subjective opinion, which you may or may not agree to. :)

    I read a German review saying that some of the new companions in Deadfire are rather shallow, with the notable exception of Xoti.

    But Tekehu was called "annoying", for example.

    I cannot play the game myself at the moment due to strict time constraints. But I would like to know this.

    In your opinion, are some of the new companions in Deadfire shallow and if so which ones? I hope you can diminish my worries!

    If you want to go into detail about a companion for explaining your opinion: Mild spoilers are okay. Please put heavier spoilers into spoiler tags though.

    Also everything is relative of course. So comparisons to Baldur's Gate 2 or Dragon Age and Mass Effect games (minus Andromeda) would be appreciated.

  3. Actually Dragon Age 2 does try to consider that you can fall in love with people who you'd normally not like. With the "rivalmance system". You can be pro mage and Fenris can still fall in love with you.

    Because being pro mage would be only one aspect about Hawke. Fenris might like Hawke very well for other reasons.

     

    In the end Fenris can even choose to fight beside Hake to protect the mages. I don't think that this makes his character weak or spineless at all. I love it how Fenris can transition from a mage hater to someone who fights to protect them.

     

    And in my eyes, it takes a lot of character if you manage to turn from hatred to offering protection to those you used to hate.

     

    Romance systems will probably always suffer from some flaws and especially oversimplification. But I really appreciated the rivalmance feature in Dragon Age 2 for what it tried to do.

    It showed that you can become friends and even lovers despite differences.

Moving away from specific characters, because I seem to not be able to get across my point well that way, If NPC A likes NPC B because she's a free spirit, then liking the PC because he has expressed free-spiritedness can work.  Liking the PC because he helped free NPC A from slavery also works if you're going for the relationship blooming from that start.

     

    It doesn't work as much if the PC is a slaver and NPC A ignores it; it violates the established NPC A liking free-spiritedness and it also violates the idea of the NPC falling for the PC for freeing them from bondage.  At that point NPC A isn't a character anymore because whatever has been established about NPC A is thrown aside in favor of having the player get the relationship dialogue from NPC A simply because the player wants it.

     

    That's actually good and I think I can understand this. But now I would like to know in which way does this apply to Fenris?

     

    It's been quite a long while since I last played Dragon Age 2. If Hawke is really pro slavery and Fenris falls for him nevertheless, then yes I would see your point.

  5. I'm probably explaining it poorly, but let me try it this way--

     

    We know that at some point, Fenris can become interested in Isabela. Granted some of that development happens off-screen.  Now the player they can be the opposite of Isabela in personality, temperment, interests and still interest Fenris. So with respect to the Player, Fenris has no standards. He's playersexual.

     

    I don't see any problem in that. I can imagine that someone can fall in love with two very different people for very different reasons.

     

    Fenris may very well like Isabela for some complete different reasons than the reasons for liking Hawke. And actually that makes it interesting to me. Because he doesn't have that one type. There are so many people who would reject someone because they are not their type that I find it refreshing to meet someone who'd be more open minded.

     

    Also what do you think of people who simply refuse to label their sexuality? Is their character any less complete? What if someone simply doesn't want to call themselves bisexual or gay or hetero or asexual or whatever (independently from what their sexuality actually is). What if they simply don't want to label it? Does only make a fixed label, that they openly declare, their character worthy?

  6. Erhm okay again, I only drew the comparison to Baldur's Gate, because I wanted to say that Baldur's Gate 2 expanded upon and improved Baldur's Gate 1.

     

    And I think that Deadfire will be expanding upon and improve Pillars of Eternity on a similar scale (that does NOT mean in the very same way!)

     

    By no way, did I mean to imply, that Deadfire is going to be like Baldur's Gate 2. And I did NOT mean that Deadfire will bring the exact same improvements that Baldur's Gate 2 had. And while I do love the Baldur's Gate trilogy for what it is, I don't want Deadfire just to try to be a Baldur's Gate 2. I think and I hope and I expect that Deadfire will be able to stand its own ground and maybe it will even become the new reference for this kind of game.

  7. Oh no, I wasn't saying that I was expecting Deadfire to be a Baldur's Gate 2. No, if I wanted to play a game like Baldur's Gate 2 then I would play... Baldur's Gate 2! But I want to play Deadfire!

    I was referring to the enhancement of Baldur's Gate 2 in comparison to Baldur's Gate 1. And I don't mean that I expect specific enhancements from Baldur's Gate 2 to be found in Deadfire (with one exception*). I was referring to the scale upon which Baldur's Gate 1 was improved and expanded upon by Baldur's Gate 2.

     

    And I would expect something similar for Deadfire. I expect it to be an improved and expanded version of PoE on a large scale.

     

    *the one exception that is coming to mind is the relationship system. That is one aspect that Baldur's Gate 2 heavily improved upon from Baldur's Gate 1. And I think with the introduction of the relationship system, Deadfire will do something similar for PoE.

  8. I remember when PoE1 came out everyone was saying they hope it's as good as BG2. I said "these guys just built the tools, assets, and pipeline for this game and I doubt BG2 is a reachable possibility. It took Bioware making their tools and what not while building BG and TotSC before BG2 happened. I expect BG1 levels of quality."

     

    In the end, I like Poe a great deal. Its pretty close to BG1 in quality. It isnt perfect, but neither was BG or BG2 for that matter. I expect Deadfire to be a pretty solid jump in quality from PoE1, and systems wise I believe the beta has shown that jump. If the story telling and other systems make a similar jump we are in for a heck of a ride. So, my expectations are pretty high this go around.

     

    And based on that, I would expect Deadfire to be what BG2 was for BG1, if not even better ;)

     

    I have very high expectations. I know that the higher the expectations the easier I can be disappointed. But in this case I feel like my high expectations are justified and there's a good change they'll be met.

    If I had quit just moments before the final boss encounter, I think I'd agree. Something about how 2 left off though leaves me very sour.

  11. You know what the funny part is now? People who might not like Deadfire's writing or feel there's not enough choices for some reason or whatever, will blame it on VO :D

    Well, yes and no.

     

    There are enough quests in Pillars of Eternity 1, which didn't have full VO, that feel like they are missing additional options. Many moral problems in such quests only arise because we are not given the options to react properly. The prime example for this is the Ferry Flotsam quest.

     

    But, people will forget that. And in so far, yes, they will blame full VO in Deadfire for it.

     

    Independently from full VO, I hope moral dilemmas in Deadfire are not created artificially anymore by depriving us of the most logical and rational ways to react to them.

  12. I'd hope that at some point down the line the rewards are released as a free bundled DLC for all platforms. It would be weird if people who want them, even on Steam, in six months time do have to input 55 codes into this portal.

     

    I really hope this too. I know about this scavenger hunt now. But I simply, regrettably, don't have time to participate. And I haven't decided yet whether I'll play on Steam or GOG.

     

    But even if this promotional event was extended to include GOG, I hope there will be a way for people who never took part in this scavenger hunt to be able to get the items.

     

    I don't like exclusive items in the sense that a part of the player base may have no legal, non-cheating way to get those items.

     

    Other than that I like the idea of a scavenger hunt as a promotional event. It's a very good idea, whoever came up with it :)
