  1. Hmm, so I have an idea of some kind....

Start at this logo which you all hopefully recognize :p

    oTyIb1j.jpg

    then invert the colors

    AYlEmNe.jpg

then make the island black again

    i7zDkNW.jpg

    now compare it to this

    KvA4VG5.gif

I would say there is a certain "uncanny" resemblance. However the black shapes above the island don't really look like lightning, do they? Are they supposed to? What are they?

Edit: Okay I was :ninja: 'd by Ethics Gradient ^^

  2.

An I right in saying they are (non-cheating) console commands, so using them doesn't unlock a DLC, it just spawns the it in question, and you'd have to do it every new game?

Yes.  Even though it presently doesn't do anything, the command you use to redeem it just made an appearance in the latest beta.

It's not a cheat.  It just grants a specific thing to the party then marks the save as having received it.

Since it's tracked per-party, yeah, you'd have to type it in every new game if you want a cosmic doggo.

Uhm okay, if that is the case, then I was under a false impression about these promotional items.

I'm still not sure I understand it completely though.

So not everyone who wanted that dog pet would have to buy an issue of the magazine?

Because it's always the same code anyway?

Only one person would have to buy the magazine and could share the code, which is a console command, with us all here?

  3. So apparently people are voting again since this thread was "resurrected".

Well, yes. In the end this is part of being on the Internet. I have noticed, not only now but also throughout our campaign, that a few people simply skip the opening post. But that is not a phenomenon restricted to this thread. I have observed this behavior throughout many years on the Internet.

I refer to such people as the "notorious opening post skippers" (NOPS). I mean it lightheartedly in a teasing, funny way though. I hope no one takes offense. I have simply accepted this as being part of the Internet.

In our case, here, it doesn't matter since the results were handed in a long time ago. I will rather take it as a compliment that our campaign still piques interest in people :)

  4. I was thinking who actually cares about buying some magazine or whatever just to get some useless in game item? What's the point?

But apparently a lot of people! I must be really out of touch.

I must say, I really hate this kind of thing. I hate promotional exclusive items.

It comes from my completionist personality. As a completionist I want a complete game, that is I want every content that is possibly available.

I remember how Bioware overdid it with many, many, dozens of promotional exclusive items for the Dragon Age games. If you have some kind of completionist OCD that really is a huge, huge bother.

So how many promotional exclusive items are there now for Deadfire? Two?

Two would be harmless. As I said Bioware had dozens. I just hope these two for Deadfire will not start Obsidian to go down that road that Bioware did.

Exclusive items mean exactly what they are called: They exclude a part of the players. And I really don't like that.

Do I want those items? Yes, I feel the strong urge of wanting them. But my rational voice is screaming at me to not waste money.

The money can never be worth it. And in addition I don't want to support this kind of marketing strategy.

The fact that dogs are my favorite animals (besides beavers) doesn't help.

And I know my willpower would instantly shatter for a cosmic beaver pet.

  5. "Crusade" or "agenda" are labels. Usually such labels are used so you can disregard something without bothering to explain why.

You just have to call any representation of non-white, non-Christian, non-male, non-heterosexual characters an "agenda" and then it is supposed to be clear to everyone that that is something inherently bad. The term "agenda" has got such a negative connotation which is all the more reason for some people to call the above mentioned representation that way.

I will not engage further than this post here in this thread, at least not until the game comes out and we know how Obsidian handles the relationships.

We simply don't know at this point. Almost everything is pure speculation on which I don't want to spend my time and energy.

I am pretty sure that Obsidian has read the opinions of romances in other games especially the Bioware ones. And I cannot imagine they would do the relationships in Deadfire in a similar way to the Bioware romances.

Personally, I do enjoy Bioware romances, in Bioware games. For my taste they would not fit into the world of Pillars of Eternity. For Deadfire I would hope, wish and expect relationships that are far more deeper, personal and meaningful. And when I speak of relationships in Deadfire, I mean many kinds of relationships. I hope the characters will be able to develop meaningful relationships beyond just romantic ones.

  6. It's been a while since the threads disappeared, and I haven't heard anything about it. I was just wondering if there's any new information--have the physical goods shipped yet, have you heard anything more about what's going to be involved, etc. We're only a little over a month out from games release, so I'm curious.

I'm *really* excited about having participated in this, and am looking forward to hunting down the Black Isle and encountering the Bastards!

    Hi there,

our thread is still here, it has just been "unstickied".

There is nothing new to report. The last contact I had with Obsidian concerning the Black Isle Bastards was at the end of September, 2017.

Remember, we gave Obsidian more or less a free hand on how to design the Black Isle Bastards. Our ideas that we were discussing about the Black Isle Bastards were

handed in to Obsidian as suggestions. They have been free to deviate from them and design them after their own ideas if they wanted to.

And that is why I haven't been in contact with them for so long. They don't need to verify the content with me, because they can model the BIBs after their own

imagination if they want to. And from the very beginning it was up to Obsidian anyway to fill out the finer details of the BIBs. Same goes for our item, by the way!

So, I know as much as you :p

We will only see in the game how the BIBs have turned out to be. Some may like it, some may not. I am very excited for it.

But always remember, the whole BIB crowd funding here on the forum was based on the belief that Obsidian knows best how to tell the stories of their games, and that's why

we gave them so much freedom in designing the BIBs.

No physical goods have arrived yet.

But as I know Fluffle he would have posted news about the BiBs immediately.

    Exactly ;)

  7. Positive depiction of heterosexual relationships, that's what I'm truly scared of.

I mean what if little kids play Deadfire and they get brainwashed into becoming heterosexual and start acting out on it?

The heterosexual agenda has found it's way into so many novels, stories, video games and movies already.

What if Deadfire is the next target of the heterosexual agenda?

    I'm scared ;(

  8. Hey guys,

I'm a bit inexperienced with redeeming the keys.

I was wondering this: I can already generate STEAM or GOG keys on my backer portal. The question is, what if I use those keys then on Steam and GOG?

I mean, the game has not been released yet. How do Steam and GOG handle that if you try to redeem a code for a game that has not been released yet?

  9. I usually dislike if beside two potentially bad choices there is a third one which allows you have cake and eat it too, unless it is really hard to achieve, or requires a cleverness on players part (like solving a conflict in Rail Nomad Camp in Wasteland 2) but even then it limits replyability, because who would you ever go for potentially bad options?

    I actually agree with that.

So I prefer it this way: If there are only two potentially bad choices then the explanation as to why there cannot be a third, good choice should be 100% waterproof and not feel artificial.

And that is also part of my criticism of some quests in Pillars 1. In some quests, some obvious choices are simply left out to artificially create a moral dilemma.

To me, it is not clear at all why destroying the adra pillar would physically (or even mentally, lol) disable me to TRY to hand Beza's pages over to (or really just show them to) the chieftain and explain my reasons to him.

  10. Btw, I think with (very) high diplomacy I should still be able to convince the chieftain that the Vailian Trading Company means bad business EVEN IF i have destroyed the adra pillar. He himself cannot understand the pages, but I would think that someone of his people should be able to understand them.

The chieftain should have the means to have someone translate the pages for him. (Especially since he is so eager to get into business with the Vailians! So it should make sense that some of his people were going to learn or have already learnt the Vailian language anyway.) And with a high diplomacy skill I should be able to convince him to make that effort.

If the questline is truncated and will be expanded upon in the full game then I did not know that. It's just that this reminded me of some flaws in the quest design of Pillars 1 which is why it has troubled me quite a lot.

  11. Hey everyone,

in here I'd like to discuss the quest design of the main quest of the backer beta.

There are some things that I find questionable in the quest "The Storms of Poko Kohara". Two things mainly come to my mind, both concerning Beza's Pages:

1.) To whom I can "show" Beza's Pages

2.) I cannot just "show" Beza's Pages, I can only hand them over

Let's assume I decide to destroy the adra pillar. First of all - How does the chieftain immediately know upon my return what I did to the adra pillar? Was that mentioned? Did I miss that? I haven't found any explanation for that in the game.

The chieftain is VERY upset with me if I have destroyed the adra pillar. So why can I not "show" him Beza's Pages as an explanation to why I think the Vailian Trading Company means ill to his people?

And here comes the thing, I can ONLY "show" him the pages when I did NOT destroy the adra pillar. Why? Why only then? Of course then I get to know that he doesn't understand the language of Beza's pages - but I should have at least had the opportunity to TRY to show/give him the pages when I destroyed the adra pillar. I cannot know at that point that it would be pointless.

This is a flaw in the quest design that I have witnessed in Pillars 1 several times. Sometimes that game simply does not offer some options in a dialogue because they would be fruitless (which you do NOT know at that point!). The thing is, you should let us try. And then fail. I would like to try and see that I fail. Please, do not just remove an option in a dialogue if it would at least make sense to try that option.

If I destroy the adra pillar I have no way of knowing in advance that it would be pointless to "show" Beza's pages to the chieftain because he wouldn't be able to understand the language anyway. He can only rely on his trust to me which is gone if I destroyed the adra pillar. So let me try to "show" the pages to him and then fail because he doesn't trust me anymore.

Another point. Why have I written "show" in quotation marks so far? Because it simply is NOT possible to just "show" the pages to someone! WHY NOT? That doesn't make sense to me in any way. Why can I only "show" the pages to someone by giving the pages away to them, by handing them over? What if my character would have liked to show the pages to several characters first and see their reactions and then decide what to do with the pages and to whom they should be given?

This reminds me very strongly of Pillars 1 when some obvious choices in dialogues were simply not there. Please, don't do this in Pillars 2.

If I destroy the adra pillar, then Beza's pages become all the more important, crucial even, to TRY to make the chieftain understand my motivations for doing so. And that is my big complaint. I cannot even TRY. I cannot know in advance that I would fail - so let me try and fail!

  12.

Unfortunately they changed the whole system, so your theory doesn't apply to 100%. :)

I would have liked it better if they had just improved their old mechanics and concentrated on story, characters and nice quests and items. But here we are with new mechanics and balancing issues and bugs and all.

Must say I am battling to find much enthusiasm for Deadfire, mainly because of all the time and hard work that went into the Pillars system which has been thrown out. I was really hoping they would use it as a base and make changes, not chuck the baby, bathtub, water, towel and nappies out..

    Hey you guys,

just letting you know I'm sharing your opinion. I would have preferred too, if they hadn't tried to invent the wheel anew mechanic-wise. They should have just polished the mechanics from the first game and concentrated instead on the story, setting, atmosphere, characters and quest design.

It took a long time until they reached Pillars version 3.0+. I fear it will take a long long time after the release of Deadfire until we will have an equally polished version of Deadfire.

So I would actually not play Deadfire at release. I would actually wait probably a year or even more until the bugs would be squashed and the mechanics would be polished enough. But you know, there this one thing... This one thing that really gets me excited and that will make me play Deadfire 2 at release - no matter how unpolished or bugged the game might be at that time.

Brace yourself, The Black Isle Bastards are coming... :skull:

  13. I have to wholeheartedly agree on mechanic changes from PoE.  DR was much better than the current penetration system, and the overall feel and speed of combat was perfect, though fast weapons could have been buffed a bit.  Now spellcasting speed is terrible and patch reactions seem to be to make everything else just as slow.

PoE didn't really get great until maybe version 3.0.  If you'd stuck with the lessons you learned, PoE 2 1.0 might have been pretty balanced and fun, but right now I'm feeling like I'll have to wait for version 3.0 for the best experience again.

    Well, here's hoping I'm wrong.

That's my current expectation too, to be honest. I'm still wondering why so many changes from the first game were necessary. Was Pillars 1 really THAT bad? THAT flawed?

For a such a SEEMINGLY bad and flawed game that SEEMINGLY was in DIRE need of so many overhauls of many of its core mechanics  I was able to enjoy the heck out of it.

Let's face it, 2 months will never be enough to refine all the new changes. It will take a long, looooooooooong time before all these new changes will finally arrive at a level of quality/fun that PoE version 3.0+ was.

  14. There's one more thing I noticed and I'd like to bring to attention, have a look at the screenshot:

    Is2l2Xd.jpg

The ship and the graphic for the village kind of mismatch, do you see what I mean? The ship appears to be 3D. The village however looks somewhat "flat". Like maybe it was 3D once, then some giant stomped on it and it went flat, 2D. Do you see the difference in how the ship appears and how the graphic for the village appears?

  15. Taken from another thread:

Ability to access character/party inventory while sailing or traveling overland on the world map.
-We often find things to be added to the inventory, most go straight into the party stash. Some, however, are items that would benefit individual characters. I then have to remember that I found such an item the next time I'm at a "local" location. This might be some long time later depending on how much map exploration I'm doing.

  16.

If this was a new game, I'd be a fine either way. But it's a sequel. I must admit I am not too fond of too many changes of core mechanics in a sequel.

Exactly. It kind of ruins the importing system if my characters have to change fundamentally to fulfil the same roles they were before. Small tweaks are fine, but something like this change is just too much.

For me it's more than just the import. It's getting used to major changes in the core mechanics that are only there in Deadfire, not in PoE 1. For me, it's very probable that I will get confused by that.

"Ah, how did this work again? This way? Oh, no! That was only Pillars 1."

"Uhm, how was this working again? Wasn't it that... oh no, not in Deadfire, right they changed that."

In my head I'll always have to change between the games and remember and learn to know what mechanic applies to which game. The mechanics will be similar enough to easily confuse them I fear. And yet they will be different enough to make me feel unfamiliar with them in Deadfire.

  17. Well, let me quote myself from another thread:

Players have noted the following over the past few years:

    • If you're a caster, there's often not much reason to invest in Resolve (especially in Deadfire).
    • From a *~ roleplaying ~* perspective, it feels weird to have muscley wizards casting high damage fireballs because they can bench 350 lbs.
So we are making these changes for the next Backer Beta build:
    • Strength - All Weapon Damage, Fortitude Defense
    • Resolve - All Healing, All Spell Damage, Deflection Defense, Will Defense

To my opinion, that is because many players equal "Might" with "(Physical) Strength". And apparently, as has been pointed out, PoE1 uses that same interpretation in some interactions.

"Might" could have just been some abstract measure of "Power", whether actual muscle power or arcane power. And I think that was how it was originally intended to be interpreted.

If this was a new game, I'd be a fine either way. But it's a sequel. I must admit I am not too fond of too many changes of core mechanics in a sequel.

Furthermore I believe, at least to my knowledge, there is no consent in the Pillars community on this change, is there? Nor is there a consent on the change of the health system. Those are vigorously debated topics, are they not? Some of the major changes of the core mechanics feel like some of the players will be presented with a fait accompli.

You justify your changes by saying "Players have noted". For every such player that supports that change you may as well find a player who does not support it. The community seems to be split on some major changes. In such a case I would actually decide in favor of consistency with the first game.

That said, I don't want to end this post on a negative note. I love you guys. I'm pretty sure I am going to enjoy Deadfire. I have supported you and I will continue to do so independently of these changes. And I wish you all a happy new year :)
