  1. Well, looks like I'll have to go for an Orlan or Aumaua Priest or Monk, as those are the least popular so far. Contrarians represent!
  2. I'm torn between While Resting and In a Safe Area. Now, it's not that big a deal, in my opinion, but it just feels more right if character growth requires some rest and contemplation. You don't work out real hard just before you go sportsing, so it just feels a little weird to be able to level up out in the field.
  3. I quoted you directly. And you didn't ask me to answer any of your silly questions. You asked me to address your arguments. Stop whining, now. I didn't ask you about a success/failure XP system. Of course, you edited your reply. How disingenuous can you be? To answer your edit: No. The reason why it won't work is because you can just farm XP by sneaking past enemies over and over all day long. But it isn't restricted to either combat or stealth, you have to have functional XP reward systems for far more approaches than that. There are, after all, 11 "professions". Write up an all-encompassing XP system right now, Stun. We'll be waiting.
  4. No, you have suggested that people get XP for their professions. Maybe you should remember your own arguments? Whether you know it or not, a systematic XP system is exactly what you've been arguing for. WTF! Characters getting rewarded for engaging in their professions is called.... Role Playing. What is it with you and just making up definitions? That is not roleplaying. But that is completely beside the point I was making. How about instead of constantly misquoting me, you could try to counter my actual arguments?
  5. No, that is not the solution. As I just explained, you can't practically or cost-effectively create a fair XP system that does that. How do you create a stealth XP reward system? XP for going into stealth mode? XP for the duration of your stealth? XP for being stealthed near enemies? XP for being stealthed and moving near enemies? All of that is just complete XP abuse central. What about casting spells? XP abuse again. And this means what? There should be No XP rewards at all? I'd imagine there would be completion XP for dungeons, as well as items. The Megadungeon is 15 levels in size. Withholding XP rewards until its completion may be one of the most moronic ideas I've ever heard. There are XP rewards already. You get XP for completing objectives. And you can have XP rewards for each level, for instance. You know, if you spent even five seconds thinking about it you could have come up with that instead of insulting people for your own lack of creativity. You know what the real joke here is? No one here even remotely suggested a systematic XP reward system. Tartantyco literally decided to Soapbox against it...in a vacuum. No, you have suggested that people get XP for their professions. Maybe you should remember your own arguments? Whether you know it or not, a systematic XP system is exactly what you've been arguing for. You have such insane tunnel vision in this discussion that you can't even extrapolate the entirety of your own arguments. If you believe fighters should get XP for doing their "profession", and that anything else is "illogical", then you must also believe all classes should receive XP for their "professions". That means XP-for-stealth, XP-for-spells, etc. Try to be somewhat consistent in your argument, and try to take off your blinders and spend at least a few brain cells actually considering the effects of the various XP systems.
  6. It's easy for you to utter the above sentence, but unless you're actually going to provide the developers with a viable XP reward system you simply can't use it as an argument. I'd imagine there would be completion XP for dungeons, as well as items. They'd probably often be part of quests as well.
  7. What a waste of a turn, dude. You keep using examples that exist in a vacuum, and that are not part of a larger narrative. The question isn't whether you're getting rewarded for doing X or Y, it's whether doing X or Y allows you to accomplish your goal(Not in-game objective). If you want to go to point B, but there's a mob of X in the way, you have to deal with them somehow. If you get XP for kills, then the obvious answer is to kill them. It is always the answer. As has been pointed out many times previously, creating a system that fairly rewards people for individual solutions to a problem is both cost-ineffective and a practical impossibility. Hence, you will end up rewarding certain behaviors more than others, thereby making certain playstyles more viable than others. This will lead to an unbalanced game. As such, the only way to let players decide for themselves how they want to approach a problem, without artificially influencing them with XP rewards, is to not give rewards for any of that stuff.
  8. To quote myself from another thread: A "clear the area of aggressive wildlife" objective would do the same thing. The optimal solution becomes obvious - kill everything.
  9. I think the perspective(And overabundance of tiny people in the party) is messing with people's perception.
  10. If you're only exploring and fighting for XP, then you're not really exploring or fighting, are you? You are just performing actions necessary for the acquisition of XP. If you like the fighting, you'll continue to like fighting, XP has no impact on that.
  11. If you're having trouble deciding: Random Dice Generator (Number of sides: 11, Number of dice: 1, Number of rolls: 1) 01. Barbarian 02. Chanter 03. Cipher 04. Druid 05. Fighter 06. Monk 07. Paladin 08. Priest 09. Ranger 10. Rogue 11. Wizard (Number of sides: 6, Number of dice: 1, Number of rolls: 1) 01. Aumaua 02. Dwarf 03. Elf 04. Godlike 05. Human 06. Orlan (If you get Godlike, reroll race for birth-parent race)
  12. It's going to be fun watching the XP-for-kills crowd not explore anything when the backer beta starts because "it's not worth it anymore".
  13. I think the main point of objective-XP is that you should never decide to do something a certain way just because you get the XP. If killing all the beetles gives the most XP, then people will kill all the beetles. It's as simple as that. The optimal solution is immediately apparent and no more thought has to be given to the possible ways to solve the problem. There simply isn't any good way of implementing XP rewards for stealthing around enemies and stuff like that, so any system where you get XP for "playing your class" will necessarily be lopsided in its rewards. This means that difficulty settings become extremely unbalanced, and the amount of viable party compositions are narrowed. Further, the XP gain will have to be balanced with the "kill everything" approach as the base point, so you'll either end up with a game where anyone who does kill everything has a really easy game, or everybody has to play the game the same way. Killing for XP simply makes the game less varied because of the design decisions that have to be made as a consequence.
  14. It would seem that Eric Demilt has taken on the appearance of Josh Sawyer and is making sham interviews. Looks like the video went private. Here's a screenshot:
  15. Well, it's a good thing that this thread has now become a discussion about Josh Sawyer's personality.
  16. I do not understand why people are so hostile to multiplayer. It would affect literally nothing in the singleplayer game. It's a party-based game where you can create additional characters from scratch. It has everything Baldur's Gate would have, except the ability for an additional person playing the game. DO NOTE that I'm not saying anything about whether multiplayer should be implemented, I'm merely pointing out that being opposed to multiplayer is just silly.
  17. I specifically pledged "Just the game" to get the game and not get beta access. That worked out well... Stay strong, Ink Blot.
  18. Damn it. I tried so hard to not buy early beta access, but today I broke. I watched the PC Gamer demo video three times since last night, and wanted to get the beta so bad, but had decided that I didn't want to spoil anything until the complete game was released. Then today, I got slapped in the face with payday and money to waste, and my frail flesh succumbed to temptation... Damn you, Obsidian. Damn you all to hell!
