The End of The Beginning
Mrakvampire replied to Sordel's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
If game don't have ressurection, it doesn't mean we need to change health system. We don't need to look further, just look at Fallout. -

I'd say something like 50%/50%. I can hit you via my bare hand in such a way that you will die. And I can hit you with hilt of my sword in such a way, that you will simply drop unconsious. So, there is absolutely no need to add another 'HP bar'. If you don't believe me - look on D&D Pen and Paper rules. You can attack people with such exotic weapons as sap and still the game operates with only one key resource - classic HP. -

1. Paizo used 3.5 rules to create their own RPG - Pathfinder. 2. Nobody wants to copy game mechanics - just stay true to basic concepts. You should understand that health system is fundamental system of every rpg game (Pen and Paper or CRPG). They think that fixing this system will fix Rest System. Ok, I agree that Rest System need some adjustments, but why they want to fix a system that is not broken (Health System)??? So my point is. Fix broken systems. Do not touch systems that already work fine. -

Rest system don't have anything in common with HP system. -

Maybe instead of introducing a whole new system there is a way to introduce some special powers/strikes to make people unconsious? What you are saying is basically the same as in order to heal a man from flu to suggest removal of his hands and implanting tentacles instead, that generate anti-flu elements to the body. -

I don't really know what to say. Fallout, Arcanum and TOEE were mentioned only once. As a example of RPGs of their studio. But I don't want to argue with you about it. As recent poll here showed a lot of people even don't want PE to be fantasy. I don't know, maybe they went here by mistake... P.S. And btw. D&D license has nothing with changing core concepts of game mechanic. -

I just don't really understand them (Obsidian) anymore. We will spend our time and effort to implement a fix to the system that is not broken, and if this new artificial system of splitting HPs to two pools (one of them regenerating!) will not feel like IE, we will change or remove it, basically we will again effort and time to remove it and rebalance all abilities and spell to old system. Guys. Seriously. Please do not fix that is not broken. Use your time on balance, story and quality of your product. Do not experiment. -

Ok, so you haven't played it, but nevertheless think that it's a good game and good mechanic. Okay. Then let me tell you one thing - I haven't played it either and I even don't know what is this game about. But I played all IE games that Obsidian use as an example of what they want to do, and they wanted us to believe, that they will do it right way. And I was 100% sure, that they will keep their promise. Right now, I'm only 90% sure and my faith can be pushed only so far, you know. -

I'm sure, that you can provide some examples. I don't like when criticism is called 'vacuum thinking' and 'hysteria'. It's job of Obsidian to explain their 'revolutionary ideas' to me, not my job to believe them as if they were Jesus Christ. I've seen good ideas in their games, and I've seen bad ones. And after that they stated that they want to give us 'old-good' IWD + BG + PST, I think, that they should at least explain themselves when they do something, that even remotely doesn't resemble 'old-good' IWD + BG + PST. Right now my understanding is that (based on Obsidian comments) Stamina will be hurt during combat in majority of hist greatly, that character's HP and only special moves (like crits, or really powerfull blows) will damage HP. And stamina will regenerate. They think that this sistem will allow to deal with 'sleep spam' and 'damage from mooks/weak foes'. I think that this is wrong. If you want to deal with 'sleep spam' make it punishing to sleep (random encounters, tickling time to finish quest), etc. There is 1 million plus 1 ways to deal with all this in-game, without altering game mechanics. -

Why do you think that these ideas are great in the first place? I, for example, don't think that regenerating "health" is a good thing. And who is right? -

I dunno what about you, but I've seen the intruduction video quite carefully and it had a statement on what this game will be. It states pretty clearly on what project Obsidian asked us to pledge our money. -
Using this logic we can basically assume that 1 stronghold can work for all classes.

More companions. 8 companions is really really low number. -
No changes for the sake of change. Think 10 times before you want to change something, then look into mirror, say "Is this change 1000% needed or I'm doing this because I don't want to look like I can't create something brand new". Then again think 10 times, drink a lot of vodka, then sleep, then again think 10 times, and only after that you can possibly change something.

What I wanted - something like 'BG2-style' What we will get... Something like Player's House 2.0 So basically right now I expect everything that should be in normal house but with fortifications, slaves servants and some general non-class-specific side quests.

good and bad from Arcanum
Mrakvampire replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Liked: - Dialogues' variety - The idea and overall implementation of tech-schools and stuff. - A lot of side quests - Fresh idea of steam-magic-punk world. Disliked: - Unbalanced (nearly broken) combat system - Unbalanced economy (played as tech - there is nothing to buy at some point) - Unbalanced difficulty (game is much easier to beat as a mage) - Unbalanced skill/attribute system (worthless skills like pickpocketing and attributes like Beauty, worthless backgrounds - good on fluff level, but that's all) - Unbalanced approach to tech speciality with all those manuals for 750 gold! - Map travel. Huge but really empty map. - NPCs are absolutely don't have any involvement in plot/story - no banter or inter-party relationships. - Weak story, absolutely lacking BBEG. - Not engaging world without compelling history. Items don't have story behind them, and playing as tech you basically create everything by yourself - not fun at all. Overall I liked Arcanum (and replayed it 2 times), but this game really suffered from a lot of issues - I would say it was even not complete game, something more like beta, so it's not as near as good as BG2. So I hope that Obsidian will note the experience of Arcanum in PE.
