GotY potential?
Piccolo replied to NateOwns's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As long as it lives up to the IE games, it's a success in my opinion. Of course, I hope it surpasses the IE games and frequently tops peoples 'favorite RPGs of all time' lists. -
I think they should certainly consider getting rid of the in-game items and signed collectables for the Paypal tiers, as well as beta. Also, I think the ridiculously high tiers that let you design stuff should probably go. Then they should look at what's left and come up with new tiers up to about $500. Or perhaps they could keep the signed collectables, but only have them at $1000, as the new highest tier.
-
I would be okay with them raising the price of certain tiers, or removing certain rewards / bumping them up to a higher tier once the Kickstarter has ended. I think it's only fair that the people pledging early through the Kickstarter get a slightly better deal. As long as there's still some compelling reward tiers available for people like myself who want to pledge a large amount, but can't afford to do so at the moment.

PVP/duels?

Wow, Dave is really talented. Dark and beautiful portrait art. How could somebody want Justin Sweet to do the portraits after they see stuff like this: http://daverapoza.cghub.com/images/ WOW! The only problem is that Dave is certainly very expensive.... Very talented artist, but I really don't like is style. Even the more fantasy-oriented images in that gallery have a distinct comic book feel about them to me. That's completely wrong for this kind of game I think.

So do I. I didn't like the dwarven ranger image at first because I thought it had a slightly cartoony, almost Disney-esque look about it... but the more I think about it, that's probably just because the dwarf character has quite a child-like face. A more serious looking character might give a very different impression. As much as I love Justin Sweet's work, I think it would be a real shame to see their current portrait artist dropped when we've only seen one example of their work. How about both? The more portraits, the merrier, if you ask me. Perhaps. The dwarven ranger artist could focus on companion portraits and portraits for the player-character, while Justin works on portraits for other NPCs.

Big City #2- 3.5mil. stretch goal
Piccolo replied to nerevar's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I really can't see the additional big city not happening. They seem very keen on the idea, and even if the Kickstarter fails to reach 3.5 million in 3 days time (which I think is unlikely), paypal will still be running. Those funds are going to go towards the game anyway, so why not use them on a feature the developers wanted as a 3.5 million goal? -

Dropping pledges because of portraits is ridiculous, I agree, but it's still a very important aspect of the game that warrants discussion. Bad portraits (like the ones in the BG games) can really spoil a game's charm for me. And if that kind of thing doesn't matter, then why even bother producing beautiful environments like the one shown in the first PE screenshot?

Voices in the game
Piccolo replied to Dostro89's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Of course it does. Are you even aware of how much dialogue has to be cut in order to go with full voice acting? Or how difficult it is for the developers to make changes to voiced dialogue compared to text? It's huge tradeoff, even for RPGs with budgets over 10x greater than what Project Eternity will have. -
Justin can do anything in the game as far as I care. Concept art, cutscene images, whatever. He is talented (there are artists that have more talent than him though) and he has a distinct style which fits very good in some cases, but he is NOT a good portrait artist - he is a terrible portrait artist imo. I hated his portraits in IWD so much that I had to replace them all... and the statement that Obsidian is *thinking* of hiring Justin to do the portraits for PE makes me cringe. This coming from someone with a Baldur's Gate II portrait as their avatar...

I'm really glad they haven't gone for a typical Asian looking monk. And does the stance really matter that much...? It's just concept art for an isometric fantasy game. A) Why does his stance have to mirror stances used in Earth martial arts? And B) We're probably not going to see that stance in-game.

Speaking of Planescape...
Piccolo replied to Voltaire's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As great a game as Torment was, I really didn't care much for the setting. Not because i'm against strange settings, but simply because I found it gaudy and very overrated.- 17 replies
