The state of Feminism, the good the bad

Oh for the love of god... When people say, "We don't know that men were stronger, faster, etc, etc," one reasonably assumes we are talking about the average. Not when they're talking about how they've reached that conclusion based on their findings of warrior women's tombs -

The state of Feminism, the good the bad

I'm talking about the average. I really did not think I would have to say it. The strongest and fastest of women never were and never will be (unless we evolve somehow) as strong or as fast as the strongest and fastest of men. On average this will always show. Oh for the love of god... when you unearth the tomb of a warrior woman, what the hell do you think you will find there, an "average woman", or someone who trained her whole life to become excellent at chopping down men? -

You had me until this. The time between then and now is pitifully small in evolutionary terms for the kind of changes you speak of. Men are bigger, stronger, faster etc, etc. Except... not really. A woman who devotes her life fully to becoming good at killing people will be better at killing people than 95% of her less devoted male peers. -
Reason why Diablo 3 pissed me off. The REAL reason.

There was a comic book with that premise. It was pretty lame. -

Accompanying those clips with the commentary labeling them "terrifyingly realistic" was worth a chuckle, at least. -

And in a few decades, this should culminate in elaborate titles reminiscent of those belonging to Exalted's Deathlords: "Boddhisattva Anointed by Dark Waters", "Princess Magnificent with Lips of Coral and Robes of Black Feathers", "Bishop of the Calcedony Thurible" etc. I'd totally play a character class called Bishop of the Calcedony Thurible. -

It absolutely would compel companies to hire subpar people, and yes, it would be unpleasant for quite some time. On the other hand, when you look at things logically... the differences in intelligence between the genders are effectively negligible. That means if you strip away the effects of socialization, they both have the capacity to be equally great at... pretty much anything (STEM fields are a pet peeve of mine, obviously, but I think it applies universally). This theory is actually fairly well supported, research indicates young boys and girls have about the same affinity for math and science and disparities are probably societal products rather than effects of later brain development. This means that if you look at sheer potential from birth and assume roughly the same experiences and education, you'll have about the same number of males and females who could become great scientists, mathematicians, leaders or whatever. Right now we, as a society, are throwing out around half of this potential with bull**** attitudes and socialization. We are already hiring subpar people. They perform better, yes, but that's because the system is rigged in their favor. Were you to strip that advantage away, raise them in a vacuum and expose them to the same experiences, you'd surely find women who'd do better in their place. But you can't do that. What you can do, however, is to even out the playing field, to show the next generation that yes, women do have a place in whatever field they're interested in. It's not for some lofty ideal of justice, it's to break down thousands of years of tradition that is holding everyone back. -

...Yeah, I can now clearly see that any talk about science would be wasted here. -
Is this game worth buying?

You've heard wrong. Alpha Protocol's pretty much the best modern day RPG ever. Yes, better than Bloodlines. -

That's not because it has no relevance, but because most people aren't actively striving to understand how their brains work, and what cognitive biases should they avoid in order to think more rationally. Cognitive science isn't a field without real-world applications. -

Somebody hasn't heard of subconscious bias. Somebody. I'm not telling who. -

HURR DURR FEMINISM IS TEH EVULZ Easy there SJW C'mon, that's about the only reasonable answer to a statement like "nothing hurts women in gaming more than angry feminist and SWJ [sic] propaganda".

Wow, that's... creative, you have to give her that.

No arguments there. Still, this whole scandal is a gross invasion of her privacy. What? The game didn't cause any drama. A butthurt ex is about the only source of drama I'm seeing here. I'm a med student who played the game and has at least four people in his family/among friends who are currently battling with depression. I think I'm not talking out of my ass when I say it's a pretty accurate representation of the illness. (That, of course, doesn't mean that every depressed person on the planet has the same experience.)

Given the complete lack of interest, I think we should repurpose this thread and use it to discuss everything feminism/"SJW"-related (still hating the word). In this spirit, ladies and gents, I present you Coming Out Simulator 2014. It's really fun, you get to snark at the author and stuff. -
It's basically a "choose your adventure"-style thingy. Wasn't there supposed to be a renaissance of those on tablets or something? Anyway, if those are sold as games, Depression Quest is also a game. Also, "a mental problem she describes as 'depression'", complete with scare-quotes. Wow. Just... wow.

No portrait for Ocean Folk?
aluminiumtrioxid replied to aluminiumtrioxid's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
I'm all for ditching dwarves and elves (even better, give everyone either long beards or ear-obscuring hair, so every portrait can function for multiple races), but cutting corners on portraits depicting people of color sends a very wrong message. Obsidian should not be in the business of worrying about messages they're sending. They should be doing what's best for the game. "What's best for the game", IMHO, includes "not taking a giant **** on the head of PoC players", but YMMV.
