Three days from the election, and Obama is still the odds on favorite. I'm not sure that there is much the Republicans can do at this point to turn it around.

Syrian dictatorship continues slaughtering children
GuybrushWilco replied to Humodour's topic in Way Off-Topic
There probably will not be much in the way of military intervention in Syria by western governments, because the populace is to weary of it. The Russian government makes a lot of money by selling its weapons to Assad, and they want to keep on making that money, and also they would like to keep their naval base there. Assad is a dictator and an ally to Russia, and so they will condemn mid-east governments and western interference when it is convenient for them, but still support dictatorships when they stand to make money! Just like the western countries -
I think Lucas is only against sequels if it is only for sequels sake. He did pursue doing a Bond movie after all . I have to say that I quite enjoyed John Carter, so it is disappointing that the movie did so badly at the box office.

It would be great if it concerned an aged and wisened Luke Skywalker who is now the head of the Jedi Order, and his mastery of the force has extended his life span. This would be a good way to explain why Luke would still be alive if the movie is set many years after Jedi, since we all know Ford would probably not want to return. They could make the main protagonist a descendent of Han and Leia, so they are still connected to the new trilogy somehow. Anyway, i still say Whedon would be great, with Kasdan Some other names would be JJ Abrams, Robero Orci, Kurtsman, Jonathan Nolan as writer, or David Goyer? It would be a crime to recast Luke, Leia, or Han, so it's probably best to set it far enough after the original trilogy, that most of them are dead (except for Luke) Because if they are living, then the movies would certainly have to acknowledge them more. Chewie could be back, if wookies have long life spans and the droids.

Even though Phantom Menace was pretty bad, and the dialogue between Anakin and Padmey in Attack of the Clones was cringe worthy, I actually really liked Revenge of the Sith Anyway, Disney's ownership of Marvel, hasn't stopped the recent Marvel movies from being very good, so maybe they will lend a similar hands off approach to Star Wars, and leave it in the hands of people who know it and understand it. Maybe they could even bring Whedon on board Also, Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote Empire, Jedi and also Raiders, is still alive and working, so maybe he could work on the new ones.

I'm no scientist, but I do know that there are a lot of differences between Earth and Venus, that it is maybe not the best comparison. One example is how the plate tectonics on Earth cause the recycling of carbon atoms, reducing warming, whereas Venus has no plate tectonics. I'm not sure that Earth would ever end up like Venus, but that does not mean that warming won't cause a lot of problems.

Of shows that are still on the air: 1. Fringe (interesting weird fringe science, and likable characters, as well as an intriguing storyline) 2. Community (Hilarious, underrated show) 3. Nikta (Good action) 4. Futurama (Best animated show ever!) 5. The Walking Dead (Very bleak, and even depressing, but I just can't stop watching it) 6. Breaking Bad (Read description for walking dead) 7. Psych (fun show, can't wait for the new season) Honorable mentions: Veep, Pawn Stars, Burn Notice, Doctor Who (don't judge me)

I agree that the major news networks do purposely do not cover third party candidates much. There was a third party debate hosted by Larry King, but it got very little coverage.

First of all, thank you for your well reasoned and insightful answer, but I will point out that I was never apologized away anything. I was only offering a logical explanation for why voters choose to go to one of two political parties, and not trying to make any kind of moral justification for or against. I still hold the view that a direct popular vote would probably disenfranchise voters from smaller states, which is all I was saying in my original post, where in fact, I said that the electoral college should be reformed. Also, I am sure you realize that the USA is not a European country and neither are many of the other countries that you mentioned. Also, I was only using the liberal voters as an analogy, and I could have just as easily replaced them with conservatives. It has nothing to do with one party being extreme or not, but that people generally speaking tend to be either liberal or conservative on social and fiscal issues, just to varying degrees. While other countries do have more room for third parties, you can look at the UK for example, and see that it is still heavily dominated by either the Conservative Party or the Labour Party, so you can see the same dynamics at work there too, even if it is to a lesser extent, and also to the Conservative and Liberal Party of Canada.
-
The truth is that the US has hundreds of small political parties, that could each theoretically hold seats in Congress, or win the presidency. I think that the reason we have evolved into a defacto two-party system, is that it just makes it easier for people to enact legislation that way. When you break down political philosophies, it is a wide spectrum, but most, if not everything at least falls into one of two broad camps: conservative and liberal. So even though two people with a liberal bent, may disagree on some important issues, or one may be more extreme than the other, they are still more different from a conservative, than they are from each-other. This is why they would stick to one left leaning political party, since their combined power, even through compromise, will get them closer to what they want, then if they were splintered. In many other parts of the world, political parties like this simply form alliances on certain issues, but here, you just end up with two major parties, that each have a wider spectrum of views. A downside is that this often leads to lots of inter-party bickering, which sometimes makes either party ineffectual an effect which has been especially evident in the Democratic party for the past four years. As for the electoral college, that was put in place to protect the interests of the smaller and less populated states. Because the USA is a geographically large country, we have many states with differing industries, demographics, and thus needs and wants. If we had a straight direct election, then the theory goes that the smaller and less populated states would become disenfranchised, and only the needs of states like California, Texas and New York would get proper representation. I actually kind of agree with this logic, but I do think that the electoral college could use some reform. I have heard one idea that the winner of the popular vote should be given some extra electoral votes, which could be a good idea.

How much is 4 million?
GuybrushWilco replied to Bryant's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Those games would cost a lot more to make, because they were all utilizing the very latest graphics technology, with huge 3D worlds and were fully voiced. I would think that Project Eternity won't be seeking to use the latest and greatest tech, and won't be fully voiced, that it should be considerably cheaper to make. -
I mostly stick to CNN or BBC and sometimes France 24, for my news I'll gisit the Guardian from time to time. Sure you can pick those apart and find some examples where the pundits or editorialists show some obvious bias, but in my experience RT goes beyond just occasional bias.
-
I watched some of your video, but there is only stomach so much of Russia Today. Seriously, it is like the Fox News of Russia, only even more biased. I do not even consider it a legitimate news source. All of this also reminds me of similar rape comments that British MP, George Galloway made not that long ago, which generated similar controversy, but at least he lost a job as a columnist over it. It was a really bad move on Romney's part to continue to accept the backing of Mourdock, and I don't see how that could be positive for his campaign. He stands only to lose support from women over this, which is a group that he is already trailing in, behind Obama. I still think that Obama is looking very likely to be re-elected, especially since he now appears to have a huge lead over Romney in early voting in Ohio.

I hope that PE is distinct from all of these other games. However, I would I like the world to feel a bit strange and unique like the ones in PS:T and Arcanum, since I liked their weirdness, and how they moved away from the typical Tolkien like world of the Forgotten Realms, especially PST. I also liked the weird and eclectic cast of characters from PS:T so I hope PE follows that. I hope PE has a more philosophical and interesting story and dialogue like PST, but with a larger and more epic feel to it like the BG games. Of course that is the ideal RPG for me, so maybe that's a bit of a tall order, and it looks like this one will rest somewhere in between Arcanum and BG, with some low technology, like guns, which is cool.

He may have had some good ideals, but he was also extremely violent and oppressive to anyone who sneezed at him wrong, and he advocated for a nuclear Holocaust during the Cuban Missile crisis. In some sense, he could be called a freedom fighter, but never am an of peace. The romantization of Che is almost as annoying as that of Guy Fawkes.

It isn't really a smear campaign technically, unless they are saying false things about her. They are not making things up, they are only insinuating that these truths have bad implications, so it's a matter of perspective. Obviously, the vast majority of people are not going to be swayed by whether she plays WoW or not.

Ah, thanks for the clarification Krezack. I do not study physics, but I do have at least a slight hobbyist interest in it, and I follow its developments. I just remember learning about Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle at some point, and this article suddenly made me think about it. It will be very interesting to see where Wineland and Haroche's research leads. Apparently it could prove useful to the development of quantum computers.
-
http://www.cnn.com/2...sics/index.html "Wineland and Haroche work in the field of quantum optics, approaching the same principles from opposite directions. The American uses light particles to measure the properties of matter, whereas his French colleague focuses on tracking light particles by using atoms. Both Nobel laureates have found ways to isolate the subatomic particles and keep their properties intact at the same time, scientists at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in Stockholm, Sweden. Usually when these particles interact with the outside world, the properties that scientists would like to directly observe disappear, leaving researchers postulating over what is going on with them." Forgive me if I am wrong, since I am no scientist, but doesn't this go against Heisenberg's principle?

I hope that Obsidian decides to regularly update the paypal tally, so we can see if the kickstarter has really reached a stretch goal . Every kickstarter that I have followed has put something up on there site where you can see the paypal tally. Broken Sword 5, even had a live counter. -

Well we have to reach $2.2m before they announce new stretch goals . -

Maybe they should just not do anymore stretch goals, and just use the extra money for what they already have planned .
