The atmosphere in HL is all about the way they integrated the storytelling with the gameplay instead of telling it through cutscenes and the like. That was, in my opinion, the best thing about Half-Life, and what really made the game successful along with the AI.

System Shock 2 isn't about the shooting. It never was and it wasn't planned as such. They didn't "add" roleplaying elements to hide bad combat. And besides, HL's combat, apart from the bits against human soldiers, wasn't exactly stellar.

I would definitely not put HL2 on my FPS list. What would go in would be NOLF 1 and 2, AvP 1 and 2, and TRON 2.0.

Half-life is not the best game ever. It's isn't even the best FPS ever. It's arguably the best game of 1998, but if you ask me even that is pushing it. Plus, Unreal is also a 1998 game and its graphics kicked the pants off Half-Life's graphics

I had three wisdom teeth removed at the same time. My head looked like a pear for a whole week.

I was there when it happened and, while I didn't throw anything at them, I wasn't exactly sad that they left. The ones throwing rocks were all a bunch of stupid kids who thought they were heavy because they listened to crap metal bands. It should be noted, for example, that while they did this to Nickelback, they were happy to listen for a couple of hours to bloody awful Slipknot..
