  1. I'm not sure subclasses would do anything unless the existing ones got benefits at certain levels and that goes against the design that the team clearly wanted of a subclass changing your gameplay from the moment you pick it. Single class characters get two advantages. 1.) They get higher level powers earlier (which is nice). 2.) They get exclusive access to 8-9 tier powers (which is variable depending on your class). The real issue to me is so many classes just have weak 8-9 tier powers that don't in anyway make up for the added versatility and power you can get from a multiclass. Now Wizard gets some great powers but what about Paladin for example? Sacred Immolation isn't exactly making a case for itself. Or Cipher? Haunting Chains a level 9 power delivers 2 debuffs that for 9x the Focus doesn't beat out Whispers of Treason a level 1 power. The only thing single classes really need is for the late tier powers to get some work done on them.
  2. Agreed. I think ultimately Deadfire will make a pretty penny for Obsidian. It might not end up matching the first game but there is also the consoles release coming which will be a sales bump.
  3. Your guess is way off. According to the Steam leak that was accurate up to July, Pillars 1 had sold just under 1.3 mil units on Steam, Tyranny was around 560K units. Deadfire despite being out for a few months wasn't even on the leak which stop reporting under 237K units. Even assuming that Deadfire was somewhere around 230K units on Steam and GOG moved 20% of that number (probably generous) that'd still put Deadfire between 200-300K units, no where near 4 million. Steam sales aren't entirely reliable since they don't include preorders/fig backers, which comprise the vast majority of early Deadfire sales (i.e. most of the people on this forum). GOG doesn't release it's sales numbers, but I wouldn't be surprised if about 30-35% of players picked GOG. Considering Deadfire sold 230k units on steam without counting fig backers/preorders, I'd say it did pretty well thus far. Could very well become a sleep seller over the years. Problem is we don't know that 230K units were sold at all. That was me making up a number. It could be 150K units for all we know. The only think we know is that its under 237K. Secondly as far as I know the leaked data was based on cheevos so unless a lot of people bought the game and never played it beyond a couple of minutes that would include preorder redemptions on Steam. Now it wouldn't count people that immediately used the console commands but that would also be true for PoE1 and Tyranny as well, so comparing those games against Deadfire would be valid. Also if you wanted to look at concurrent users information from Steamcharts, Deadfire's high was around 22K vs PoE1's 41K. So I think its probably fair to say Deadfire probably is probably doing slightly better than half as well as PoE1 at launch. So honestly I'd say anywhere around 200-400K is a reasonable guess (200-300K would be my guess), 4 million units is not (which was my main point).

  5. Honestly at this point I feel like 80% of the Cipher's worth is in 3 powers. Whispers, Dominate, and Ringleader. (I'm not including passives in this.) Soul Annihilation's nerf is pretty ridiculous if Assassin/Soulblade is the sole source of the issue. Frankly SA needs some basic changes like not expending on a miss. It feels terrible that a miss is basically robbing you of the signature hit, especially when it doesn't hit that hard anymore. I actually prefer instead of an all or nothing power, Soul Annihilation had a version available at each power Tier. So a level 1 SA does added raw damage. A level 5 SA does a lot more raw damage and maybe adds a dot. A level 9 SA does massive damage, a dot, and something like an AoE or heals the Cipher. It would give the player more choice on how much they wanted to gamble their focus pool and Soulblade some reason to go single class Cipher. Something Josh really needs to look at is giving people reasons to stay single class. Multiclass is cool and an awesome addition but at this point feel like too much of a no brainer.
  6. After finishing the game I feel like Cipher needs a second look. Its just an out of place class atm. In PoE1 it was a strong because in a world of per day casters, it could give great control on a per encounter basis. Combined with PoE1's health system that encouraged you to not only beat an encounter but to do so without draining too much of your resources, a Cipher was a great asset. (Assuming you weren't abusing the rest system). Sure the per rest classes took the cake if they spent a lot of resources but over the course of the day, a Cipher could provide a ton of damage, control, and mitigation. However in PoE2 both of these consideration are thrown out the window with health regen and per encounter abilities. Cipher in PoE2 basically feels like the only active abilities worth anything are the Charms/Dominates, Amplified Wave, and Time Parasite. Only Time Parasite is something you need to remain single class for. Everything else is passive. Its abilities are poorly thought out. You can spend 90 focus to hobble and terrify 1 enemy or you could spend a third of that to dominate them and get them to fight for you. Spend a little more focus and use Ringleader and you can get multiple enemies to fight for you. Of course the lack of tuning of the difficulties make a lot of powers useless as well. Stasis Shield was a power that was great in PoE1 for taking out a tough enemy to dispatch minions. There's hardly a point to do so in Deadfire. TLDR; Cipher feels like a relic for PoE1's systems and not the changes that came in Deadfire.
  7. Kinda disappointed with some of the Cipher HLA's. Defensive Mindweb only works until someone is hit them they are taken out of the web. Driving Echo's is nice but reminds me of how much I hate that Cipher's can't target themselves with some spells like DE and Reaping Knives. Feels odd for a striker to be buffing others and not have the option themselves. Frankly someone of these abilities feel like they should have removed that restriction for the Soulblade. Shared Nightmare looks nice though. 1000 Cuts might be real interesting if you can combo with Mind Blades to stack a bunch of dots on a single target.
  8. Chris is doing contractual work on Pathfinder: Kingmaker. I highly doubt Chris is getting anything like a percent of profits to give him any real motivation to try and divert people to Kingmaker. Now sure the timing on this makes it pretty obvious that this was done to put a black eye on Obsidian's management right before a major release, but honestly do you think Chris is trying to get people to make a boycott? I don't think Chris would believe that would succeed or have anything other than a very minor impact. Frankly I think its because of the timing of Deadfire this is more likely to get posted in the larger game media sites and layoffs might be coming as Deadfire wraps up (its a serial problem at Obsidian) and there might be unlucky employees who can add some fuel to fire and verify parts of the story. In my eyes the most damaging thing in there is Tyranny's team was gutted to get out PoE, something Paradox wouldn't be thrilled to hear (though I doubt its all that rare an occurance). Most publishers probably wouldn't be bothered by poor treatment of an employee but paying for a product that's only getting minimal work though....If other publishers see that on a major site, I could see more reservations with them giving Obsidian a contract. That'd be a far bigger black eye in the long run than a few cancelled preorders.
  9. Reads Forgotten Sanctum description. Sounds like Wizards getting overpowered archmage spellbooks. I hope there's unique powers for the other classes the way Wizards got Llengrath/Concelhaut spells in WM.
  10. Exactly wasn't the whole point of kickstarting Eternity, Tides, and Wasteland 2 because it was something publishers had no interest in. I think a publisher may serve Obsidian better if they want to make a massive open world game.
  11. Just posted this in the other thread but I'll repost here Generally speaking my initial reaction is meh. I like open world games but its become too much of a buzz word lately. Obsidian proved to me with New Vegas they know how to do an open world + good dialogue and story though. I also hate the idea of episodic content. Yes it has worked in the past for some games, but I'm the type of guy who wants to experience the whole game not sit and wait a few months for chapter 2 because I'm done with chapter 1. There's honestly not much in there to comment on.
