  1. no, that's not how it began either. I said the game looked poor (visual design, UI, combat, writing), so I was probably missing something that one wouldn't see unless he played the game for a couple of hours (and I'd like to add that if a game takes many hours of playing to appreciate it's not a very good game to begin with; now that I think about it, Fallout 2 isn't a very good game: it's all filler areas disconnected from each other, with some very good NPC encounters and a lot of mindless combat - today I wouldn't give Fallout 2 a a single chance). so the argument that it's not enough to play it for 30 minutes to appreciate simply proves my point; that the game's design is far from stellar, it's very uneven, and it takes digging to get to the good parts. well, I don't have time for that, so I won't buy it. that is what I said, what followed was something that completely missed my point, though, saying that I couldn't tell an old school RPG from a dog turd, that my opinions aren't valid, I would assume because I don't like all the "kewl" RPGs so I'm clearly "not in the club" or something. I mean, come on, arguments like, "it's an old school RPG, but it's ok that it has a minimap and handholds you, because obviously games like NWN, WoW and Skyrim etc. proved that minimaps work, so why not include them" - no one sees the flaw in this kind of logic? man, I could go on and on, but I see it's pointless, most people here like this game so much they get very defensive when I try to criticize some aspects of it that are on the surface. as if it was they who made this game. and then I get called out for "lacking perspective", "play the game for 20 or so hours first". hey, wake up call: I'm not writing a review, this is a first-impressions discussion
  2. there's a lot of misunderstanding in this thread. it's caused by this mass psychosis around this game, no doubt. why would you say my opinion is not valid? what makes you the judge? it's valid to me, obviously, because I base it on my observations. if I see something I don't like I don't see a point in spending any more time on it. I came into this thread to ask for other people's opinions on what makes this game so good, what is it that I can't see. and mostly I've been getting hate back, with little facts and a lot of "your opinion is less valid than mine" crap. kind of proves my point, doesn't it?
  3. darn, I should've made a screenshot for preservation's sake EDIT: as for D;OS's combat being the best turn-based combat ever, man, go play Banner Saga: Factions, it's free on Steam. it will blow your mind with its complexity and its smart implementation

  6. I suddenly remembered a PvP game I used to play (it's very hard and has a steep learning curve, that's why I dropped it) - it has the best turn-based combat in the history of video games, in my opinion - Banner Saga: Factions. its combat system is brilliant

  11. oh, there's plenty of consequence in FS. maybe it's not TB, but phase-based or something. I don't know. I just know it's the best non-real time game since Jagged Alliance 2
  12. last TB game I really enjoyed was Frozen Synapse. should give you an idea of what I expect from a TB game
  13. meh, I guess there's something wrong with me, because everything you guys bring up makes me roll my eyes. the fact that the game is challenging and requires thinking doesn't make it a good game. combat in BG, for example, requires no thinking at all. it's all point and click stuff. still, it's fun. but fun is so subjective, I don't blame you, you're not wrong for liking D:OS,
  14. well, that different overall tone is what drives me away from D:OS. I liked BG 2's antagonist, because for him it was very personal. BG was good in that respect too, I liked the fact that it all was down to earth, unlike in Throne of Bhaal (but what else can you do at epic levels). but the writing in BG 2 isn't always good, I just like the plot and how it's told through these quests. and *the* most important thing for me: combat and how your party composition and equipment plays into it - combat in D:OS is crap, as far as I can tell (it's very hard to get TB combat right, though, for example I don't like combat in Fallout and Fallout 2, it could be better). even though in Infinity engine games combat is flaky, I'd still take it over badly designed TB combat

  16. in other words, things that I care less about than anything else in a game such as this oh, well, what can you do as for missing out on great games, the only truly great game that starts off really slow I can think of off the top of my head is Fallout 2. I hated the first few areas with a passion, that's why I stopped replaying it, I just can't bring myself to make the trek to Vault City all over again just to get to the interesting parts. most other games I tried and disliked in the first 30-60 minutes would eventually prove bad anyway (BG, I'm looking at you)

  21. nope, when I was a teenager tabletop games didn't exist in my area, you had to order them by mail from people who lived in Western Europe or North America, because there was no Internet either. ah, the good old days. I saw my first web page in 2001, I think good point, I don't know how to describe what a good story is, but I can provide examples. BG has a good story, IWD has a good story, ToEE's story sucks, Fallout 3 has a tarrible story etc. and I agree about the entertaining value of a game. but this value isn't determined by the game's story. a good example would be The Last of Us. I think its story is, while not terrible, not anything to write home about. and its gameplay is even worse. the only good thing about that game is its characters, while they're tied to the story, largely it's only fun to see them bond due to where the story takes them. hence why I really didn't like TLoU, if I were to break it down into parts that make up the whole game, all but one would in my opinion be weak and not worth my attention
  22. I never understood people that played games for their story, to be honest. If I want a good story I read a book. I play games for their gameplay. that's all there is to it. I skip dialogue in all RPGs as for the post directly above mine, not going to argue with you. no point, you're apologetic of and I'm heavily opposed to this game. we'll not see eye to eye. I find your arguments laughable, so what? you like it, fine, I'm glad for you. it's just bizarre, from my standpoint.
  23. no update today, I'm busy navigating Firkraag's maze. but, I have a few tips: Watcher's Keep isn't all a high level dungeon. you can get a few +4 weapons in there fairly easily. s short sword +4 and a crossbow +4 that fires +2 fire arrows (that never run out) can be just bought from one of the helmites standing at the entrance. first level of the dungeon has weak mobs, two golems you can entirely avoid (or kill one by one if you get the ward stones), a bunch of statues with a Wakizashi +4, a bastard sword +3/+6 vs. demons and a whole lot of useful loot. the only problem you'll run into: it also has two Vampiric Wraiths, they are hasted and have very high THAC0, so get a bunch of protective spells going before opening the doors to the main chamber, they also drain levels. I was able to kill them with Jaheira tanking under Stoneskin and Negative Plane Protection with AC -9, but they would still hit her fairly often, so make sure your heavy hitters have high THAC0 (my DDs - main char, Keldorn and Jan - all have it at 3) it's very well worth it to go down to the Keep and get all that loot and XP (you get close to 70000 xp for finishing the first level), as long as you can get rid of those two mists the rest shouldn't pose a problem
