  1. I'm not sure I agree about age not being a factor for computer games. Technology provides huge limitations for a game, and much less limitation for a movie. Any amateur programmer could write a better game today than any of biggest titles released 30 years ago (what was the average ram back then? 16k?) you certainly couldn't guarantee to make a better movie than those made 30 years ago...
  2. I didn't take a lot of notice, but I believe as a recruit you basically get enough points to max out 3 skills. With that said, put 1 point in sabotage, carry as many emp grenades as you can and you can spend every other skill point on combat skills, which is more than enough as long as you specialize.
  3. Without wanting to be Captain Obvious here... Deus Ex was released 10 years ago. How many 10 year old games can even begin to stand up to a comparison with todays titles? Right there is what makes it a classic. Will we be comparing games in 2020 to AP as a benchmark? I think it's unlikely. It's been forever since i played DX, but at the time it stood head and shoulders above most other games. With that said, I think in 2010 it is harder for a game to stand out. Art budgets, advertising budgets, politics (reviews, drm) etc all allow average games to do far better than they would on a level playing field. While very good games (I'd include AP in that category) can easily be buried in all the noise. Personally, I wouldn't change anything about AP even if I could. Sure it could be improved given an infinite budget etc, but i'd rather have an enjoyable game released every year by obsidian (or any company) than one 'perfect' game every 10 years. Lets also keep in mind that DX2 was complete crap by comparison. That was an epic failure and deserves more criticism than AP ever will...
  4. Whether it's legally enforceable is a moot point. Are you really going to sue them to enforce your rights? You would realistically need to spend thousands on legal fees and research to even have a tiny chance of winning a law suit. I used steam for a couple of purchases earlier this year. About a month later a steam update corrupted my steam client, which promptly deleted both games from my pc - no confirmation, no request for permission - they just vanished. It wasn't a big deal. I just re-downloaded the games (DA:O was one, incidentally). But, from that point onwards every savegame file refused to load (the program would just hang). During various troubleshooting experiments I discovered that it only happened if I was connected to the internet.. if I unplugged my modem the save games would load just fine - so presumably steam was blocking them from being loaded. It's now almost 3 months later and steam tech support hasn't answered my support ticket on the issue. I don't much care as the games are usable now (deleted and reinstalled the corrupted steam client which fixed it), but if they weren't usable i'd be screwed, and steam apparently don't give a fig about it either way.
  5. Personally, it would take a team of assassins holding a gun to my head. Steam sucks total balls. Read the fine print and they can deactivate your access to any product at any time without any reason. That includes products purchased elsewhere and voluntarily linked through them. You're literally signing up to say "I waive all ownership and consumer rights to this product"
  6. Why do single player games need to be balanced? It's a valid concept for multiplayer and mmo's but who cares if one playstyle or skill combo is harder or easier than another in sp? You can play the game how you want. If you want more of a challenge then avoid using guns and expect to get raped. Game too hard? Try stealth and chainshot. It's not rocket science that some skills will make the gameplay harder or easier. Chain shot and shadow operative overpowered? Then only put a few points into each. You can nerf them yourself if they bother you so much lol...

I think it's a lot easier if you avoid stealth initially for this build Priorities: max MA max toughness decent level of tech aptitude (better heals, better armor, more convo options, brilliance to reset fury and iron will on bosses) Optional: 1-2 points in sabotage if you don't like the mini-games 5 points in stealth if you want the radar General approach: Until you get the flying knee kick move sneak up on people when possible. You can still get pretty close with no stealth and wearing combat armor - you wont get many actual take downs, but you don't need them the same way a non MA build does. Once you get the knee kick you can sprint at people and effectively do an instant take down (via the follow up move) Use fury if you need to cover a lot of open ground safely (only really needed on hard difficulty) and for bosses, obviously
  8. This thread is retarded. Any game suffering performance issues due to the computer is going to be horrible to play. You should review a bunch of recent releases, it would be pretty funny: "#1... This game sucks ass because it keeps freezing up" "#2... another game that sucks ass because it keeps freezing up" "#3... Guess what? Another game that sucks ass because it keeps freezing up"
  9. 1. It's an RPG so you start out weak and the initial gameplay is fairly boring compared to later on when you have skills etc to use. This is most apparent in the (critical) first few seconds when you first get off the table and shuffle across the room. Not a good first impression for an action game where your first mental priority is to check the games performance etc. 2. The AI is clearly intended for stealth play. If you're dumb enough to play it as a regular shooter then.. you're really not going to get the most out of it. Again, the first few fights seem to encourage a shooter approach over a stealth one... doh. 3. The story isn't very compelling at the start. The whole "wake up on a hospital table" thing has been used by way too many games already, which suggests a (false) lack of creativity in the story. 4. The mini-games are harder than most. If you're expecting the traditional "if you're older than 5 you can beat it without effort" level of challenge then it's a shock to repeatedly fail at a minigame. 5. As with any console/pc port the controls suffer. The interface and controls are the only weak area, and AP certainly isn't the only game guilty of that one. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but it does give detractors a lot of ammunition to criticize in the first 30 minutes or so.
  10. My personal theory on this is that many reviews are copied from other reviews. Net result, a couple of bad reviews basically got plagiarized into 20 bad reviews. Like many I was hesitant to buy the game after reading some of them, but I'd say it was well worth the money. It's too subjective to compare, but i'd rank AP alongside games like deus ex, vampire the masquerade, mass effect etc and that's some pretty legendary company... Certainly the complaints about enemy AI seem very inaccurate. It's no worse than any other rpg/shooter I can think of and far from being gamebreaking as some reviews seemed to imply.
  11. I think the developer deserves a pat on the back for the minigames in AP. They SHOULD be nearly impossible if your character isn't specialized in that area. Even then, they should be challenging. How hard do you think it would be to hack a computer or pick locks in real life with no training or experience?? 1. they fit in the context of the game 2. it's an rpg and sure enough, investing in character skills makes them easier 3. you can just spend cash (emp grenades) to bypass them 4. they're largely optional/avoidable I found them very hard, due partly to the sluggish pc controls, but you know what? It added to the realism imo. If you're running through a building being shot at then stopping to hack a computer or pick a lock should be a rare thing. Just because you could doesn't mean you would want to etc. From a dev standpoint I'm sure it would be much easier to just slap in an easy minigame that anyone could beat with their eyes closed. People whining are the reason that games generally are getting more and more dumbed down. If the devs listen to one whiner then they listen to all of them, and the difficulty gets set to the lowest common denominator.
