The usual game versions' mayhem
WorstUsernameEver replied to WorstUsernameEver's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
Wow, it looks like the PC version is winning by an overwhelming margin right now. Granted, that's far from indicative considering that the users of this forum are usually already PC gamers, and that probably it's easier to download the game from a couple of downloading services that broke the released date rather than buy a console copy but.. wow. Also Alpha Protocol's PC version is apparently the top-seller for PC games on Play.com (linky : http://www.play.com/Games/PC/4-/5320389/Al...G/Product.html). -

I never perceived it as a logic loop. More as a 'Plz, blow up' 'Lulz, nice, ok. BOOM' I think they felt they add to add that option since it's Fallout-y but couldn't write it properly and gave up on it. -

John Henry Eden is a better villain than Shodan? WUT? Even I, a man who still hasn't played System Shock, after having seen the reveal on a YouTube video bow before Shodan. Come on, President Eden wasn't even threatening! -

The Marlowe ploy was indeed particularly good, especially since it took me 2 playthroughs to understand exactly WHEN he made the switch (and to be honest there are hints, both subtle and not subtle.. the subtle hints being the change of his tone in dialogue, the less subtle being your witcher pendant vibrating as with monsters and threats...). Even will all its flaw, The Witcher was a pretty memorable experience. -

By the Doctor you mean the Professor? I liked his smugness but Javed felt unimportant and the end. Yes he was threatening but he was also shallow and basically a scary arabian man with piercings without much personality. while a bit rushed in his presentation felt quite cool though. -
Meaning that you don't like the mag, or that you haven't read it?

True, but there's still quite a few people waiting to play the game... So who knows how it'll turn out? June 1st can't get here soon enough. Yeah, as I've already said, it's probably me being overtly negative, especially since some games with rather mixed reviews on Metacritic still manage to achieve a respectable success. It also appears like I generally enjoy less polished/well-received games compare to the mainstream (not because of their lack of polish, but because imho they're better in other departments ).

Strange to see that they find Bioshock 2's villain superior to the first one, I've always thought the consensus was that Bioshock had the better plot and characters while Bioshock 2 was the better shooter. -
I was talking of the IGN user reviews you silly. @The moderator with the amusing cat avatar - I very much know, but I still think that some points deserve to be analyzed, even if they derive from horrible misinterpretations of the designers' intent. For example it's quite clear that Alpha Protocol didn't manage to get its design philosophy across with some even after putting the subtitle, and it's quite clear that otherwise, some people will feel that it's too light as an rpg.

Interesting. I'm probably going to get ME2 after I've finished Alpha Protocol a couple of times and I finally manage to finish my exams (at least 'til September). -
That review is indeed pretty bad and sounds a lot like '13 years-old douche' but the fact that the first 3 reviews get the game an average of 5.0, doesn't help the game nor Obsidian. Or maybe I'm just overtly negative today.

Haven't played Mass Effect 2, but seeing the Geth higher than some pretty well-known and well-regarded villains is rather jarring. Maybe the sequel added a new layer of depth to those mooks? -
I assumed so, considering that Duck and Cover credited you for the tip. Now let's get back to hoping that Fallout New Vegas doesn't use Fallout 3's voice actors.

How was Dragon Age or F3 flawed hype machine? I assume he means that reviews tended to emphasize the good and sweep the flaws under the rug. Granted, I actually think that both games are good and they would have had good reviews regardless of the hype of the publisher. Funny thing is, I prefer Dragon Age, but I think it's the game that has less mainstream appeal and that probably suffered a bit more in the reviews compared to Fallout 3. As for Alpha Protocol, there's nearly not all that hype, in part because the graphics are dated, in part because SEGA & Obsidian don't have the same prestige as EA & Bioware and Bethesda, and in part also probably because of the reduced mainstream appeal. I, however, am against the 'ooooh, reviewers are corrupted, so let's not take into account when a reviewer brings up a flaw'. If a reviewer points out something he considers a flaw, it's fair, as long as the review is informative and gives people who read a good idea of what game they're going to play (or not). I also think more feedback is always good for the devs, even when they screw up a game badly (which from what I've seen isn't the case, though the bit-tech reviewer seems to think otherwise).

I've just been thanked on NMA for posting the news on The Vault, which basically amounts to stealing the news from funcroc on my part or.. something. I think I'm slowly beginning to understand the nature of web 2.0.

Let's just hope that Obsidian's dialogue can push them

I think there is a great difference between looking at what people have done, and having the experience of doing it yourself. I could say that Bioware had the luxury of looking at what Gears of War did right, and adding their own RPG twist to it. I've seen loads of bands live, but I was still a nervous wreck when it came to my first gig. Their is no substitute for experience. @Oner, I haven't seen that. It's just something that struck me as unfair. While I don't think your comparison is totally fair I understand what you're trying to say.

And so it will be sabotage. Thank you gentlemen. -
Point is, Obsidian had the luxury of looking to what Mass Effect did right and what it did wrong too, not too mention that's it's far from certain that there will be a sequel.

Is it sabotage or technical aptitude that governs the hacking? I need to know because most probably my first build will a be superstealthy guy and I'd prefer avoiding combat and killing as much as possible. -
BUT there is a complaint in the review about the skill system being too simple so who knows. I'd prefer hearing the comments about someone who has the game and their experience compared to the reviewer before simply blindly dismissing it as 'trashing the game'.
-
Until I get the game I won't comment on the reviews, but the comments on the writing ARE worrying.

If anyone of you is french apparently there is a new magazine preview in the stands from Canard PC.
