  1. I sat down and watched the first episode of Altered Carbon, and it quite hooked me. It's very much a introduce everything and try to set the world with just the initial hooks of plot. Very neo-pulp detective / cyberpunk as mentioned, and looks set to be one that will involve a lot of flashback sequences to explain who and what characters are as it goes forward. I expect to see parallel storylines from the far past and the present that will have some twist connection by the end of the season.

  3. Well I'm trying to avoid putting political related jokes in the funny things thread to keep politics out of one place.

  5. Ah, the trials of an author putting up a book chapter each week online and having that pause awaiting that next one... Ilona Andrews latest Innkeeper.
  6. On that random trivia style... The Berlin Wall has now been gone one day longer than the 10,315 days it stood
  7. And people say my posts are inappropriate... See, to me the joke is about the person not having the perception to recognise that while thinking they can cheer up a lonely kid, not about the kid with that problem.
  8. Remembered that I'd picked up The Bureau: XCom Declassified for free from Humble the other month, so installed and did a bout of escapism playing it over the weekend. Not too bad, saw part of the twist coming. The combat was fairly so so, but it did feel quite short as a storyline, and you didn't really have that much of the "capturing alien tech and developing it."
  9. Hm, gamespot have tweeted the Han Solo teaser trailer. Haven't seen it up anywhere else yet. Looks interesting from that mishmash of sound bites and edits.
  10. When authors decide to put up sneaky little un-edited snippets...
  11. Watched Flatliners (the new version). Most of the cast are good, the cameoish appearance of a white-haired Keifer Sutherland as one of the teaching Doctor's was nice, but some how the whole thing just runs alone as an average "eh" rather than anything special. I'm not sure what it actually lacked, but it didn't really have any creepy punch to it.

  14. One of the regular Baen authors who has gone through periods of prolific writing did an interesting blog post awhile back. He basically said that over the last year or two he's been engaging with fans, attending various conventions, his marriage is in a stable place and he just hasn't been writing because.. he's engaging socially and positively with people. And that in consideration, the times he's been actually writing and producing novel after novel... were the times he was unhappy with something, when he was withdrawn and didn't have friends and such around him and he realised where he used his writing process as an escape from those feelings. Which left him in a slight conundrum, because of his successs as a writer, he was in a positive place, which meant he wasn't able to get engaged with his muse and write like he used to. He was semi-joking about "If I want to be able to write properly again, I'm going to have to stop talking with fans, stop engaging with my friends, tell my wife to leave me alone for a few months and go and hide out in the basement with bare minimum tv food and lots of coffee and whiskey until I'm not really happy anymore."

  16. A bit of language, but it's interesting to see just how wound up and run down the HonestTrailer crew are by having to face the Transformers movies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mc-8TwRFy4
