Sometimes I love myself. Because I researched and overpaid a bunch of monies for that motherboard, I actually haven't felt the slightest need to upgrade anything for the past three years! The only thing I've done was add another 6 GB of RAM (when RAM prices hit rock bottom) for 12 GB total. I remember that NOTHING used USB3 when I bought this. Not even now does everything use it (my brand new phone, for example). SATA3 is now the standard, but back then even the SSD's were still using SATA2. I actually think my own SSD is using SATA2.. The only thing I planned for that didn't really take off is eSATA. I actually have 3 eSATA connections in the back and even one extra power connector on the outside. Never used any of them. Can't believe I've had the same overclock for 3+ years (bought it on 2010-01-11) on the stock cooler without problems. BTW, NEVER retire this thread, no matter how big it becomes. So much fun to read people's old post bragging about their 4GHz Pentium 4's.

Yeah, I found both the driving (unexpectedly) in GTA IV to be terrible in addition to the (expected) deficiency in the shooting parts. That, and the needy "friends". I remember everyone and their grandmother lauded GTA4 for its realistic driving when it came out. God, that annoyed me. GTA4 was the most boring of all the GTA's so far. I really hope they bring back the fun factor in GTA5 because GTA4 could have been sooo good.. if it wasn't so dull.

Btw, the biggest performance step you can take right now is to install an SSD, if you're booting from a standard hard drive. It really makes a huge difference in how your computer feels.

You're set. Just upgrade your GPU to a GTX 660 or above (or Radeon 7950 or above).

Difficult to advice an upgrade path without switching out everything. It's just not worth spending any serious cash on upgrading old equipment. But.. for speculation (if you have access to some second hand market with extremely low prices): CPU: Intel QX 9770 (3.2 GHz, 12M L2 Cache, 1600MHz FSB, LGA775) RAM: Corsair TWIN2X PC6400C5DHX DDR2 2GB x 4 (2GB XMS2-6400 dimm's, CL5-5-5-18, 800MHz, DHX) GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 1GB GDDR5 (in Sweden it includes BioShock: Infinite, Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon for less than $200) Because you were so vague about which motherboard you have (the most important part of a computer), this setup might not even work, as not all motherboards supported the extreme editions (or even quad versions) of CPU's. But this is the closest you would get to a modern system without replacing everything. It would actually run everything on the market without a hitch at 1920x1080. Especially the 7850 is exceptional performance for the money.

Well, this update brings a few questions to mind. In the first paragraph you acknowledge what makes aRPG players tick (stats, loot, skills). In the second you reveal that you've basically removed it all and replaced it with something else. OK. I have not played your game, but it does make you think. You have a 9 space grid, 5 of those grids occupied by your equipment (assuming you don't go to battle naked). You mention that you can equip fire items, but that would make you vulnerable to other elements, so naturally you'd want a backup anti-element protection item. -1 slot. Want to be able to switch between one handed/shield and two-handed weapon? -2/-1 slots (depending on which you currently equip). Worst case scenario? 8 slots occupied when you enter the dungeon, one slot free for the loot. Best case.. 2 slots free. Not exactly catering to the loot crowd here, are you? You also acknowledge that many players like the number crunching aspects, yet you have removed all stats and attributes. So where is the number crunching? From the equipment? But we only have 9 inventory slots to play with. Not exactly catering to the number crunching stats crowd either, are you? I don't quite understand how skills work, but I am guessing it is also tied to your limited pool of equipment? Maybe you are catering to the skills crowd. Unclear. The positive? With such an extremely limited interface, it should be suitable for the iOS/Android market. A simple interface like that seems perfect for a touch screen.

Oohh. I want. Loved Titan Quest.

Since I use the Bloomfield i7, I have three memory lanes to fill. That's 6 slots of memory modules.. My computer looks like a ****ing porcupine on the inside.

The biggest difference between older i7 CPU's are actually power draw. My Bloomfield i7 is rated at 130W! Although I still run it on the stock cooler and overclocked from 2.66GHz to 3.2GHz without any problems so I'm guessing those numbers may be slightly inflated. The newest i7 (Ivy Bridge? Don't remember all the bridges..) is faster and is rated at 77W. Quite an improvement in efficiency.

If you're going the Intel route, then it's very difficult to upgrade the CPU without having to change motherboard too. Intel seems to change socket with every new generation of CPU's. Highly annoying. AMD is a bit better in this regard as you can usually upgrade two or three generations of CPU's on the same motherboard. Unfortunately, they're being demolished by Intel in the performance races at the moment, but as budget alternatives they're very viable.

BG2-style "Easter Egg encounters"
mkreku replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
One of the main reasons why I love the Gothic games so much is precisely for this reason: they are shock full of extra content like the examples listed above. It gives any game longevity and a reason to return to the game even years after finishing it. I think it was on my third playthrough of Gothic that I found the hollowed out rock in the river. Never have I been so happy to find a few gold pieces.. -
Does anyone remember the old Goldbox game Pool of Radiance? It was a story about a continent overrun by evil monsters, and the game begins when the good guys has just managed to get a foothold in one block of an old overrun city, New Phlan. As new adventurers, you're immediately assigned to clear out the remaining blocks surrounding the city from monsters. After you've done that, the world opens up. But the quests do not. Instead, you get a call from the mayor of New Phlan. He sits in the town hall (naturally) and assigns you a new quest and tells you that subsequent quests will be handled by a clerk inside the town hall. There were also posters giving out quests on the town hall walls. I thought that system was superb! Of course you could find random quests while exploring the world, but having this grand plan that you were following and always reporting back to the same place felt great. The town hall reacted to your progress and different people within had different quests for you from time to time. It gave you a great feeling of accomplishment to advance the story and see the fruit of your hard work this way.

Maybe it's not much closer, but when playing it definitely feels too close. I always get this strange claustrophobic feeling when playing Path of Exile, a feeling I haven't had since playing those crappy old IE games of the past.

I don't think any Leafs fans would be weeping if they had lost last night. At least this Leaf fan is still euphoric about even making the playoffs. That we actually put up a fight against a top-seeded opponent is just a sweet bonus.
