In my case, it's probably more linked to the types of games I play (these days). If I was into "historically accurate" strategy, it very well could expand my knowledge of some historical events and conflicts. Games are a part of popular culture in the same way as, say, movies, tv series etc. so, sure, they expand my participation in that. But is there something unique about the medium in this sense? No. Is this impact significant in the scope of either gaming or the sum of my education, so to speak? No.
