Harl's top 10 CRPG list of all time

Yet ToEE isn't on the list... I have to assume that was said in humor. -
Harl's top 10 CRPG list of all time
TheHarlequin replied to TheHarlequin's topic in Computer and Console
oh and to reply to the 'how do you add z game when y came before it in the series' comments; I looked at it as the older a engine got the better it was refined. FO3 was good, but story, dialog, RP mood and potential I felt NV was superior. Ditto with Skyrim vs Morrowind, etc. With every iteration it was more polished and IMO got better on all levels when it came to the RPG and PnP like elements. -
Harl's top 10 CRPG list of all time

For role playing potential, mood, setting you think WoW offers better RPG/table top elements then Bloodlines? o.O I think Diablo was great for what it was. A hack and slash with some RPG stats tossed in. IWD was IMO vastly deeper story, writing and art direction wise then diablo could ever hope to be. -
Harl's top 10 CRPG list of all time
TheHarlequin replied to TheHarlequin's topic in Computer and Console
Either I didn't explain myself or there is a lack of understanding. None the less, allow me to clarify; The point of this list was IMO the CRPGs that made strides in closing the gap between PnP and CRPGs in a significant way. The best CRPGs that emulated and did justice to its table top roots on the PC. It isn't necessarily a list of simply the best CRPG's as the only criteria. But what CRPG's paid homage to its roots and came close on some level of feeling like a PnP game. Games that offered a open world, character development, choice/consequence, well written NPCs, deep story, PnP like game rules, etc. For the record I was torn between DA for #10 and Bard's Tale. BT certainly broke ground on several fronts and felt like a PnP game. -
With the end of the year I decided it was time to take stock. I complied what I feel is the top 10 most influential and biggest impact CRPG's since the 80s. The ones that pushed the genre forward and closed the gap between PnP & PC gaming. Feel free to comment; http://www.wodnews.net/Articles/Blogs/tabi...f-all-time.aspx

Doesn't that include pretty much every game made? Pretty much. A great collection of arm chair developers who seem to claim they have all the answers yet few if any have written one line of code or written a story.

44,000 year old house built by Neanderthals discovered
TheHarlequin replied to Humodour's topic in Way Off-Topic
If you came to Salem, MA during Oct and listened to the born agains, baptists and catholics you'd change your tune pretty quick on that statement. Putting aside the 'you are all going to burn in hell for celebrating Halloween' and when they are not fighting among themselves (very entertaining seeing the born agains rag on the baptists who in turn rag on the catholics who rag on the born agains.. rinse and repeat) you will see all 3 groups all do agree that evolution is fake and the world is only ~6000 yrs old. As for the story itself very interesting. I do not think we have a full understanding of the impact of these people and all the theories I have read so far just don't seem to jive, at least for me. I think in the end we will find they had a much broader and deeper impact on our history then we currently realize. -
There is so much to Skyrim I simply am not able to do it all. It really is a amazing game. And I like how all the main characters are flawed on some level as well.

I want to wish all my Pagan, Witch, Wiccan and Wizard friends a joyous, safe and prosperous Yule. May the gods bless you and yours this winter solstice! And for the record the pagan holiday is where xmas comes from. So thanks for celebrating our holiday!

Funny you say that, most folks in forums and blogs say magic is actually game breakingly powerful once you get past midway level wise (focusing on magic for 40+ lvls).

Bashing? Hardly. It is called a educated opinion and simple observation. Just because that opinion is not unicorns and rainbows does not make said point moot. If I am so way off again stick to my points and refute them (if you can). Sounds more like sour grapes on your part due to a bitter pill of truth I just force fed you. *shrugs*

LMAO best cartoon about Skyrim yet!

I may talk the talk from time to time but I have backed it up by walking the walk. Case in point I know when a sites relevancy has passed and I move on. That said, care to address any of my points or just going to pull a codex trollbait post?
-
I'm pretty sure you're the only one who thinks a internet message board could have sort of "significant relevancy". You never talked to or dealt with game developers in depth obviously. Talking with a developer made you feel significant? Good for you. *watches his point fly right over your head*

> Who are these "most of the posters" having total ignorance? Many of our regular posters love and enjoy cRPG games and mechanics and discuss them in great detail. That's a reply to a comment, just not my comment. Allow to me re-state. The codex has no real relevancy anymore in the CRPG community yet most of the people there are oblivious to that. IMO they go there either out of habit by this point or the entertainment value which many in this thread pretty much admitted to going there mainly for. While yes once in a blue moon a good topic may be had the vast majority is trolling, flame bait and spam. No different then most other anrachy based forums. The codex is nothing special anymore, thousands of forums just like it on the net. > VD left for his own reasons, and then DarkUnderlord took the site over. VD has no Admin capacity on the site now. Great, once again that is a reply to a comment just not mine. I didn't say why he left I said a. IMO he couldn't admin his way out of a wet paper bag. b. he (and the new peep) quit, tossed in the towel. Again that speaks volumes. Neither point did you dispute but made excuses for said actions. >Well if you continue to love the current crop of craptasitc "Yet another action game with little or no cRPG mechanics labeled as a RPG #64573" that Publishers continue to churn out, I guess enjoy your game. The Codex only wishes Publishers would take a look at some of the classic cRPG mechanics and allow a Developer to make a game with them. Similar to what Obsidian did with Fallout: New Vegas.... Last I knew NV was a "current crop", as is Skyrim, and DA1 and NWN2 isn't that old either and both excellent CRPGs. So the typical codex SOP of crying like a baby about no good CRPGs in the past decade is moot and only servers to hear themselves cry and sound as if they are all knowing to anyone who will listen. > As one of the sites forum moderators, I'm not sure what you are implying with this statement. Do we on occasion get "racist, neonazi and spam" posts? Certainly. With our Open Registration policy, that's always bound to happen, though most of that behavior usually stays within the spam forum. Please don't take this as a attack. But this is someone with vast experience under his belt of founding, running successful website communities. You are a moderator in title only. The codex wants to give the illusion there are some kind of standards or oversight. There isn't. If there was REAL moderation 90% of the garbage that is posted there wouldn't be allowed. The trolling, flame bait, personal attacks, harassment, etc. Let me let you in on a little secret. the reason you folks allow that is because if you actually enforced posting standards like most sites do then it would become painfully obvious what your site has become. A shell of its former self, living in its glory days as there would be only a handful of posts a day that would be posted/allowed as the majority of your 'community' would move on to another sire with a free for all posting policy as it mostly is now. As that is really all they want to do. Post the flames and personal attacks, etc. A successful, helpful, useful, productive community site isn't measured in how many posts and traffic do I get (quantity), it is measures in how much quality is posted and when the signal is much higher then the noise you succeeded. And before someone jumps on me for any of this let me close off by saying, if the codex didn't have the issues I stated or was relevant anymore they would still have developers posting there on a regular basis. Clearly even they are sick and tired of the garbage, and when the people you are trying to influence have abandoned your cause you clearly are well beyond your expiration date. M2C

Simply put, the codex is long past having any kind of significant relevancy to the total ignorance of that fact of most of the posters there. When the admin (and I use that term loosely my dealings with him he was a self important jack arse) tosses in the towel as he did it pretty much speaks volumes of the site. Another year or two and the place will be nothing but trolls and people living in the past talking about being 'old school' hating any game made after 2000... oh the racist, neonazi and spam posts.

You do know if I wanted to copy/paste the info here I would have.

For those interested I was in the demo during PAX East. Got several mins of in-game footage and notes on the presentation. Under the Articles -> Blog section.

Shadowrun anyone?

How long before you think the PC version will be released?

I just spunked myself... just saying. Can't wait for this game!

This. And in ~2 yrs when XP is DOA and no more patches, updates or support. Clearly someone who does not think long term and likes to live in the past. Technology moves ahead you either move with it or get left behind. Simple as that. As for UAC you people whining how horrible it is know in win7 you CAN ADJUST the sensitivity or simply TURN IT OFF right? Talk about making a mount from a mole hill...

Why put it off until you are forced? The only MS operating systems I've used since DOS 6.2 have been Win 98se and XP pro. Saved myself a lot of money and aggravation not upgrading every time MS craps out a new OS. ummm Win 7 is a leap ahead of XP.. not like I said go to vista..
-
I'd say the fact they are killing support for it in 2 yrs soon is a pretty 'compelling' reason. Once win 8 comes out next year is will be the red headed kid in the room and will treat it as such. Why put it off until you are forced? Win 7 works great and much better then xp.
